GTA VIce 60"s - present day?

Recommended Posts

I'm a huge fan of R* just as anyone else and remeber emailing them back when they finished vice city and their response was inspiring. I can honestly tell you I'm very passionate about this series just as them and what it will take for it to push the next step for the brand.

Over time the city changes from the cars you see on the road, advertisement style, weapons, what is determine legal/illegal.

A fancy car you stored could be worth a lot within 30 years. Routes you used to take are now differrent. Get to see characters age and style changes. Hurricane season will actually be a thing. Throwing and catching sport items. Finding remote islands and sunken treasure. Human trafficking and the porn industry. Etc.

60's Bay of Pigs

70's Cold War

80's Cocaine Wars

90's Mob Wars

00-GTA Online 2.0?

Would you want a dynamic story or a static one?

I have said this a couple of times here, but I think a story similar to how the story of Driver: Parallel Lines was layed out would fit a GTA game well, and it would be very interesting to see it pulled off in recent years.

In that game, part of the story is set in 1978, but stuff happens and the other part of the story is set in 2006 (which was present-day when the game was released). Sure, developing something like this is much harder, you'd need to pretty much do two cities different enough to have the atmosphere of each year but similar enough to be recognisable and have the sense of time passing. The same would go for characters and settings. Double the work, double the research, double everything, and the only thing Rockstar wants to double nowadays is their profit.

I don't like the idea of a story that spans decades. Something like Bully, where the story spanned a year, is the most I can take, but this is just absurd. For all intents and purposes, GTA is very tied down with social commentary and other things that parody a specific time or place, like how San Andreas got the early 90s Gangbanger stuff and GTA 5 had the contemporary "age of social media". That said, how will they do it for a game that spans four decades? GTA 5 had three protagonists and they were all train wrecks, so I don't want to see how badly Rockstar can try to stretch four decades.

GTA Online is currently taking place in the year 2017, so I believe if they don't keeping pushing Online.

We're see the next location take place in the year 2018 and release 2020-2021

But its shouldn't be online only, cause my main interest is the story campaign and The Crew 2 has every aspect of Online gameplay I ever liked, which is racing. .

Driver Parallel Lines has something similar but Rockstar could master a story over multiple years.

I hope they will take it into consideration.

I've always loved the idea of a multi-decade GTA, but going all the way back to the 60s and stretching it to modern day would be a bit too much IMO. I could see it working in a linear game with chapters. Just not the type of games GTA are.

Mafia II had a great setup where it started in the 40s and during the middle part of the story..

Spoiler

Vito done time in prison and when he came out it was 1951.

10 years would probably be more realistic to get a sense of change.

I would like to play as a 18yr troublemaker during the 1/2 of the 1st chapter and in the year 1985 in San Fierro.

Then have a 33 year time jump to 2018 in Las Venturas and Vice City. Because the 48yr protagonist gets banned from San Fierro, when he gets out of prison and finishes up the 1st chapter sometime after.

That would be dynamic, especially if they introduce a hot kickass 30yr female protagonist from Vice City in the beginning of the 2nd chapter.

No, need for a 3rd static protagonist.

Nah, not a fan of the idea of any GTA's setting spanning multiple decades. On top of that, it would take up an awful amount of technological resources to pull off, stuff that could have been put into more suitable features for the game. GTA is simply not structured in such a way to accommodate it.

For a new Vice City, just give me a detailed, fully-utilized map of a present-day Miami and South Florida setting, and I'm happy.

Chill, bro. GTA isn't being developed by Bethesda who claim to not have a engine near as good as R.A.G.E.

Rockstargames has pulled of multiple decades already with their games. Bully went from 1st day of school to the graduation finale. RDR1 went from Texas to Mexico and back, even pulled off a Zombie dlc. GTA has developed multiple times settings, even GTA 5 from 1980 North Yankton to 2013 Los Santos. Everyone want to explore North Yankton, but couldn't since R* didn't want to develope 5 balls deep like 4 was.

GTA 6 has to be next gen and R* are billionaires, impossible is possible!

Actually it wouldn't be hard to pull off. I'm a substance painter user so adding damage and age to certain buildings is easy. Also there are certain "trends" devs usually follows, like procedural levels, see through windows.

Also the 60's would have less buildings and vechicles models compare to the contemporary time.

Then over time more weapons are unlocked like the glock,  flame thrower and baseball bat.

Think about it. Instead of changing the time of day and weather. What about the year for GTA online matches?

I like the idea and think it could be pulled off. One thing I'd like is for some of the story to have a good amount of time in prison at some point which could be a way that the game progresses from one decade to the next.

I have a big feel that time will be a high factor with the next installment. I bet we will see some sort of time mechanic in RDR2

That would be a dumb idea to implement ingame though. The number car models that were being sold in the 1960s were about the same as the numbers of car models being sold on the market in 2018. It isn't like you're gonna see 30 cars on the road in the present time and 5 on the road in the 1960s

Pretty sure a few companies came up and others have fallen within the last few decades.

I know this deviates slightly from the topic at hand but would anyone else be more comfortable with a present day setting if the writers made a point of including older characters with interesting, well researched back stories?

GTAIV was contemporary. But it also had characters that gave you a real sense of Liberty City over the years. John Gravelli was as old school Mafia as it gets, Dwayne Forge was a crack kingpin and the McRearys had self destructed and were on their last legs. There were also characters like Derrick involved with the Provos in Northern Ireland and Niko had countless tales about the war in his home country.

I like the idea of a GTA that spans several decades (and I love all the references to Driver PL) but I would be content with Vice City present day as long as the game is populated with seasoned gangsters as opposed to hashtag douchebags.

@Black_Jesus Would you mind sharing the response you received from Rockstar from when they finished Vice City? I'm interested to hear how they were back then!

The first scene set in North Yankton was 2004 like you said (it even said so at the beginning), but for some reason, Rockstar chose 80s police cars and really old-looking vehicles for the map. I guess they were trying to say that either North Yankton is a poor state that hasn't got the money to upgrade anything, or it's figuratively stuck in the past and behind the rest of the country.

Probably the first or a mix of both!

@The Coconut Kid

This is back when they ask, "what would you say is wrong with the world today"

Someone responded and they actually took feedback. This was during the time of vice city release. Cannot recall what was said outside of we love fan feedback and taking things into consideration. I remeber this site was called something else during that time or it merged? However I assume they now just stalk these forums .

I'm saying the game wouldn't be like

Press left 70 s

Press up 80 s

Press right 90 s

press down 00's

But a continuous storyline based on  "in game choices" until the events of the game world plays out should you decide to kill each main character off after each hesit that were years apart, sort of like GTA V
