Although once you've wiped out all the gangs and completed the story and all the side missions there isn't much left to do.

I started a new playthrough recently, I destroyed all the compounds yesterday and I'm only a few missions in.

Although there is a mission towards the end where you have to destroy the compounds, will it just skip over that entirely?

That game was ahead of it time I actually liked it more than Mafia. The sequel was meh though. God damn I miss these quality movie licenced games from the mid 2000s.

Both Godfather games from 2006 and 2009 were quite the underrated masterpieces! Just like Battlefield (apart from the disappointing, upcoming Battlefield 5), The Godfather games are pretty much EA’s better side.

Even though the family tree system was in the second game, it was a freeroam game mechanic ahead of it's time. Being able to hand pick and promote your own crew or even send them out on missions truly made you feel like a powerful mobster. I would kill for a game like this again.

 

Sorry for bumping an old thread but not really, this was an awesome game.

I'm kinda annoyed I didn't get into The Godfather game. By the time I got it, it was a little dated and I kept comparing it too much to GTA. I didn't break into it and ended up leaving it too long to give it another chance. I loved the idea of it and you know I love the idea of empire building and just crime/mafia games/films in general. If they did a HD remake, I'd absolutely buy it. 

 

I wish some more games came out, based on classic films. Goodfellas or Casino would pretty dope.

My only problem with the second one was all the bugs and Glitches and the cities all looked kinda lame. Miami was cool but New York was disappointing in Godfather II.

I'm still hoping for HD remakes of The Godfather and Scarface bro.

 

It'd be awesome to see some of these classic crime flicks turned into games. Get R* onto it. They done a great job with The Warriors.

I loved The Godfather game, I played it all the time on my PS2 back when I was thirteen.

 

I might dust off my old PS2 and play it again now that you mention it.

This was a very underrated game. The second one was pretty fun as well. I'd say it's one of the best games based around a movie.

 

Funnily enough, it was a better and more polished game than Mafia 3 was. Which is just hilarious to me. How some of these games had so many limitations and just shat all over these new releases.

I agree. In fact, I've been meaning to give it another go one of these days. The Godfather 2 was pretty slick as well. It was a bit rough around the edges. I remember the draw distance being particularly bad. But the only thing that truly bothered me about it was that once you unlocked the bulletproof vest and ammo belt bonuses by taking over crime rings, they would appear on your character and there was no way of removing them. Really sh*tty design, especially when you take into consideration how cool the character creator in that game was.

Something I used to do was have a standoff with the police at Boolie's Bakery after I'd take it over. Since there's usually 5 or 6 guys there to protect me and the police station is down the street, I'd get five stars and duck into the bakery and watch the chaos ensue.

I'd love to see a video game adaptation of Goodfellas or Casino, or maybe an HD remake of the first Godfather game (sadly, that is extremely unlikely as long as Coppola is still alive and EA is a much worse company now than they were in 2006)

 

Although since I've been replaying the Xbox 360 version of the game, I am most definitely considering writing a Godfather fan fiction over in the Writer's Department, one that freely blends elements of the game, the movies, the novels (both Mario Puzo's original novel and Mark Winegardner's sequels), and maybe even some extra-canonical material such as Omerta (Puzo's final novel)

Hopefully after the success of Spider-Man other big name companies look at that and do more licensed games.

Rewind to winter 2007 and I had just picked up a PS3, brand new at the time. Bundled in with the console was The Godfather: Don's Edition, preowned but enough to appeal to the movie fanatic within me. I'd played the original on PS2 and hadn't given it much of a run, but this was shinier and far more polished, and had a far better opening sequence where you're rescued by Luca Brasi on the rooftops of 1940s New York. I was able to free roam the city without completing any of the tutorial missions in this version, and ended up immersing myself as a throwback thug before getting attached to the Corleones.

 

The standout of this game, for me, was the fighting system. It's on par with Sleeping Dogs and I believe EA imported it directly from one of their fighting games. It's incredibly responsive, satisfying and your character ends up being really capable of inflicting damage on unsuspecting mobsters. You're able to use the environment to your advantage, so putting people through windows, throwing them off a rooftop or launching them into a burning trashcan is all possible and very much encouraged. I think it would still stand up today and put the hand-to-hand combat in most games of similar genre to shame.

 

Storywise it was also fantastic, faithful to the movie and brilliantly intertwined. The author of the "authorised" Godfather novel sequels weighed in on the creative direction of the story and he did a much better job of it than he did with his books. An area the "Don's Edition' improved on the original was that you were required to amass a certain amount of control over businesses and warehouse by various points of the story and couldn't progress otherwise, so you would get a much better sense of integrating into the Corleone Family as their latest henchman.

 

I felt the city was done extremely well -- and those of you who have played the lackluster sequel to The Godfather game can probably attest to how sh*tty NYC was depicted in the sequel game. It was literally a block and could have been Rhode Island for as much resemblance it bore to New York -- and this was supposed to be your home turf where you ruled the roost, for f*ck's sake! But in GF1, you're given four massive boroughs and Jersey, plus the seedier outskirts of Manhattan where you can jump rivals in sewers in train yards. For anyone who's come of age knowing nothing of New York City outside of its current condition, it's interesting to just drive around and see how massively different it was 80 years ago. It's like being on the set of Gangs of New York or Once Upon a Time in America.

 

It had it's bad points, make no mistake. I felt the story was too short (I counted about 18 missions) and the time frame the game is set in was hard to keep track of. Suddenly you're in the 50s and literally nothing changes. Mafia II it ain't. There were literally four or five different vehicle models in the entire game. Some of the side missions were tiresome and repetitive, but I'm mostly nitpicking.

 

I would take another AAA, gangster movie tie-in title in a heartbeat -- preferably Goodfellas. Enlist De Niro, Pesci and Paul Sorvino while they're still around for the voice acting and craft a story where you play as the wiseguy who fills in for Henry Hill while he's in prison. Set in 1960s New York, it would be a belter!

At 8 Euros, it's an offer you can't refuse. You will find it's a far superior upgrade on the PS2 version.

I wonder if Sleeping Dogs got some of it's environmental attacks from this? Obviously they probably got a lot of the environmental attacks from True Crime, but I'd imagine at least the fireplace attack in the warehouse came from this game.
