Forza Horizon 4

Thing is, the Hot Wheels cars were all things made in real life, too - so when you're driving the Twin Mill around Astmoor, it's not some oversized toy, but the custom-built, functioning replica that Chip Foose helped build:

7452011786_5e2f50c483_c.jpg

Meanwhile, these aren't just working cars with custom Lego bodywork - they're upscaled versions of Lego kits, complete with Lego drivers. Giant toys, transplanted into an otherwise realistic environment. Heck, because they're the Speed Champions sets, they're not even the more detailed licensed kits.

I can't help but think that this would have been better as 'Forza Horizon 4 Presents: Lego Speed Champions', like that neat Fast & Furious spin-off (which was effectively a cut-down version of Horizon 2, with the cars from F&F7). Sell it as a stand-alone thing, and instead of it being a weird intrusion into Horizon 4, you've instead got a decent Lego racing game, built on a sturdy FH foundation. Plus it'd probably sell more, for folks just wanting the Lego stuff, who might not want to buy the whole of FH4 to get it... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I mean, I never argued whether these cars were real or fake lol. It makes no difference to me.

I would have preferred an Isle of Man expansion, or at least something realistic. The Youtube comments on this reveal via the Xbox channel pretty much sums up my feelings for this.

Oh, I get that - it's just that, for me, personally, I'm better with anything that might plausibly exist. Even the FFXV Regalia variants aren't totally beyond the realms of 'things someone could build as a working replica' - likewise, I'd probably drive the heck out of this if it got added:

i022408.jpg

(good grief, that film was such a spectacular dud... :sigh:)

But the more I think about it, the more I really reckon Playground Games are missing a trick by making Lego Speed Champions an expansion, and not a stand-alone thing you can buy without owning FH4 first.

As for what they could have done instead, I'd have gone with Goodwood, with maybe some classic racers in there - maybe too similar to what's already in the game or FM7, but it'd definitely be a much better fit thematically.

That's unlikely. It will likely be a new world that you can teleport to just like the Hot Wheels world, or that Fortune Island DLC.

The Hot Wheels expansion for FH3 sucked, and nobody spent time in the Hot Wheels map

I actually liked the Hot Wheels map and spent quite a bit of time there. Even after I got all the achievements I still kept going back.

I'm not sure about this Lego expansion. Hot Wheels was pretty good because the map was fun and unique but Lego looks like it's just the regular world built with Lego. I wasn't expecting much anyway the first expansion sucked and Horizon 4 has been really disappointing for me I actually play Horizon 3 more than 4 now. At least I know in the future not to pre order ultimate editions. I think all Horizon games in the future will be disappointing I doubt any will come even close to being as good as 3 is.

If it was a complete lego map with a complete set of lego cars I would buy it.

Too bad from the looks of it its just a small part of the map with lego and the props and scenery is a mixed collection so theres absolutely no immersion. This is what I can tell from the trailer and gameplay vid so its not final.

Honestly, it makes me wish Playground Games would make a new LEGO Racers game after this.

played a bit of the new expansion today, it's alright. driving oversized lego cars while smashing plastic trees is something 6-7 year old me would enjoy and the brick challenges are a pretty neat mechanic.

it does feel a bit rushed though, the map seems pretty small after a while, there's ONLY 3 new cars and

the barn find isn't even in the game files

, like you can tell at some points the expansion was rushed to be presented at E3.

i'll probably hop on it for a couple of weeks then go back to playing the main game.

So what exactly do I get for building this master builders house? Does it literally just change the look of the house? Or do I actually get a functional garage/etc like TDU2 had? Or are the Forza devs really too lazy to even add that?

Disappointing expansion as expected. I'm just blasting through all of the challenges in the Ferrari 599XX Evo. Challenge is the wrong word.

I'm not gonna lie, Lego wasn't what I wanted or expected from the second expansion but f*ck me it is fun!  makes a nice break from doom and gloom shooters like Division 2.  I was starting to find mainland on Horizon 4 a bit of a grind since the advent of Playlist so I'd say for me at least the Lego expansion came at about the right time!

Yeah - plus a bunch of minor gremlins that snuck in (camera height is off in the 'home' menu, menus took too long to load after the update, going to Fortune Island would glitch the Autumn Weekly Forzathon to the Spring Season one, then revert back, and reset the whole thing, etc. :facedesk:).

I'm probably going to hold off until at least as soon as the barn find gets added - still got plenty to keep me busy with all the championship events*, so I can wait until Lego Valley feels like a more substantial/complete package before I get stuck in.

*it's such a simple-but-effective hook - class/performance restrictions force me to step out of my vehicular comfort zone (unlike FH2, where 90% of my time was spent in either a Nissan Skyline or a Ford GT, and very little else...), and there's normally a shiny 'new' (for the game, at least!) car that you can't easily get by other means. So not only have I unlocked things I wanted (like the 300ZX), but I've come to appreciate driving things I'd unlocked but never used, like the Panamera Turbo. :)

Come to think of it (and as weird as this might sound), the way that Playground Games has adapted the Horizon formula into a 'live' experience ends up making progression, learning new things, unlocking new stuff, etc. feel almost like the same loops that make Monster Hunter games so satisfying - in order to beat something and get the reward, you have to try something new, and then using that opens up a whole new set of possibilities that makes you chase another reward, which requires trying out something else, etc.

The lego expansion would have been more fun if they made the lego cars weigh 1 lb and undriveable because going over 15mph would cause the lack of weight to blow you up in the air. What a sh*t fest that would be.

...hang on - is that a Lego Nissan Almera, by any chance? ;)

New Top Gear stuff looks fun - granted, it's just a short Story thing, but those are a nice shot of novelty every so often (particularly when they count towards monthly playlist completion), and there are some neat rewards, like a Stig suit, or the "Track-Tor".

That, and the new unlockable cars are pretty good for this update - I'm glad to see my favourite Koenigsegg (CCX) make a return for the first time since Forza Motorsport 4 (back in 2011 - !!), after having to make do with the (still very nice!) CC8S.

I like the look of the TG content - looking forward to driving the Merc E-AT sideways through some farmer's fields. I love cars like that with extra details.

...uninstall the DLC?

Speaking of which, I finally figured I'd give it a shot (seeing as I've knocked out 93% of everything else for this week, and I'm not waiting any longer for the barn find* to get added), and it's really rather fun so far. Better than Fortune Island, certainly - one of the things I like about FH4 compared to the likes of FH2 is being able to just bomb across the map 'as the crow flies', and being restricted by sheer drops on FI felt like a throwback to FH2 (and not in a good way). Conversely, Lego Valley is like the main FH4 map, only denser - and it makes knocking out all the incremental challenges even easier to do, since you're only ever a stone's throw from something new to tick off the list.

As for the immersion-breaking issue, I've only ever seen one Lego car in the main game, and that was a player in a ranked championship - and as for the opposite (all the traffic in Lego Valley being largely real-world cars - along with the underlying map using realistic trees and terrain with the Lego stuff plonked on top), it suddenly clicked for me: Lego Valley is more or less a more extreme, car-centric version of a Legoland theme park, and ...yeah, fine, I can work with that. ;)

Plus the speedway is great fun, and I do like that the Lego Mini Cooper is based on the famous 1967 Monte Carlo Rally winner - that, and things like being able to win a free F40 Competizione from the F40 event. Just a shame it isn't a fully-fledged stand-alone thing, really - fewer than 7% of FH4 players have even started the DLC, and I'm sure there are a bunch of people who might not want to buy FH4, but would buy a Horizon-style Lego game. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*most likely next update, because there's a new Lego Speed Champions set coming out then, and they're probably holding off so that the two can be released simultaneously. So far, the barn find looks like this:

HeJXb6S.jpg

And that matches up nicely with the upcoming set - which, crucially, is advertised as being featured in FH4:

If uninstalling the DLC is the only way to do it, then that makes this DLC even worse.

I'm going to try it anyway since the Lego expansion is trash.

Update: I uninstalled the Lego expansion, and the icon remains on the map. 😂

if the complete map and ai traffic is lego then it would be perfect.

Honestly the dlc feels unfinished IMO but its ok because it is quite cheap and I can just ignore it's existence by just staying in the main map and fortune island.

I uninstalled this game a couple of weeks after it came out because the online was thrash. Every second race was this awful cross-country rush and there was forced team playing. Is it still the same?

Just posting some long-overdue photos from FH4. I've been holding out for a hero till the end of the night to win those damn round glasses and denim jacket in the Wheelspin before taking pics and still no luck - and I missed the recent inclusion as a Forzathon reward because I was away (ffffffuuuuuuu...). Why we can't just buy common items with Forzathon Points at any time is beyond me.

So anyway, being more positive, here's what I've been driving as of late:

Ai4ifVf.jpg

I parked up at the Drag Strip and got some compliments on the Golf from some guys who were shredding their tires. Really happy I was able to get the Police outfit earlier in the year to complete the look :D

4PufWHs.jpg

Thought i'd sort out a livery for my truck as last week's Forzathon had me behind the wheel for the first time

zkzYjfL.jpg

My Hench Merc, courtesy of TG. Wish I could change the colour of the trim/grille as i'd have gone with a black and red combo out of choice

I still don't have pics of my all-time favourite vehicle in the game because I'm one of those weirdos who values the character customization in a racing game and I need my round glasses before the camera comes out for that one dammit... hoping I get my specs soon and then I swear it's gonna be pictures for days

Yeah, it's more or less the same - I finally gave Ranked Team Adventure a go just to knock out the monthly playlist requirements, and Freeroam Rush is a crapshoot. Fortunately, I'm mainly getting longevity out of PvE championships and weekly challenges, because I don't play as part of a dedicated racing community, and trying to race with random teams is like trying to knock a wall down by headbutting it...

That, and the mentality behind PvP isn't the same as what I enjoy from the game, and why I prefer PvE: in a PvE championship, you can take an eligible car, keep it bone-stock, and see if you can get a handle on its particular quirks in order to win. In PvP, you just need to build a one-size-beats-all monster for S2/S1/A - it's less about the specifics of the base car, and more about finding the right tune, and I find that detracts from what makes different models of car interesting, personally.

Saaame. :turn: I've been playing pretty heavily since Christmas, and while I've managed to unlock a decent assortment of cosmetic items, I'm still missing must-have things like the plain black leather jacket. :facedesk: I reckon Playground Games could get away with adding permanent FP prices to cosmetics, and add more cars/unique stuff to the Forzathon Shop - that way, you could blow Forzathon Points on clothes any time you wanted, or choose to stockpile them in case a rare car shows up in the store.

Need to take a pic of my all-time favourite, too - although it's just the R33 Skyline GT-R LM Forza Edition with no additional modifications, because it's probably the best all-round car in the game (without upgrades/tuning), and I do like taking on Bugattis and Paganis in a '90s Nissan and wiping the floor with them. :D  Second favourite is the LM's civilian-grade counterpart, which is basically my trusty GTAO Elegy Retro, but now with proper rims and right-hand steering:

PvP in Forza has always felt pretty basic - I've never been a fan of repeatedly ram-racing in the same two or three S2 / X class cars.

@Commander S, that's a beautiful car with the modifications removed (PG seem to adhere to the Rockstar school of vehicle aesthetics a lot of the time). I may have to see if I have one in my garage as i'd like something that can lock horns with the usual higher class cars. Currently have a Porsche 918 which is my speed and stunt workhorse but I need something a little more 'me'.

Also, I finally got my glasses in a random Wheelspin last night! At long last I can see where i'm driving, though I doubt there's a single a tree left standing in all of Britain by now.

Only need the black flats and denim jacket and then i'll be good to go :sigh:
