[GTA SA] Guide for making car sound mods

Want to start making some car sound mods? This is just the tutorial for you. (I also just felt like writing one, so I wouldn't also forget how to, heh)

It's actually fairly easy to do. Don't be intimated by the length of this post.

1. Open your source video game. Mute all of the other sound effects (music, tire noise, environment noise, etc) except for the engine sound in the game's options. (Alternatively, you can also grab a youtube video that meets the requirements below)

Then open Audacity. Hit record (R) and record these:

  •     Idle Sound
  •     Revving
  •     Acceleration
  •     Top speed sound
  •     Deceleration

(To be able to record game audio, head to the section that has 4 drop-down menus [in the bottom of the toolbar]

Set the 1st box to Windows WASAPI, the 2nd box to your main output device, usually called Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio) (loopback), the 3rd to 2 (Stereo) Recording Channels, and the 4th should be the same as the 2nd one [without loopback])

audacity-Qn4-Ea4-Rxk-G.png

You then need to convert the Stereo recording to Mono, do the following steps shown in the images below (just click on the images to make them HUGE, done this to make the post more compact)

2. Stop the recording, set the Project Rate (Hz) to 32000 (can be found in the bottom left corner), and highlight the sounds below one by one. Also, test the sound for audio pops before exporting by pressing Shift + Space (repeat highlighted audio).

If you hear audio pops, then zoom in into the front and end of the selection until you see dots (individual samples) or just a nice, single line

then make sure that both the front and end dots are aligned to the "equator" (the line in the middle)

audacity-Kn-CPu-Gmri5.png

Export the highlighted sounds (File>Export>Export Selected Audio) following this format:

Bank_xxx (refer to #3 for naming the banks)

        sound_001.wav - Revving sound

        sound_002.wav - Idle sound

Bank_xxx (refer to #3 for naming the banks)

sound_001.wav - Hard acceleration sound (just one gear)

         sound_002.wav - Top speed sound

         sound_003.wav - Deceleration sound

Make sure to export the highlighted sound by selecting File>Export>Export Selected Audio, and export it as a WAV (Microsoft) Signed 16-bit PCM. (important)

Also, clear the metadata tags even when there are none.

2019-09-05-07-36-42-2.png

3. Decide what car sound group it would replace. Here's the list:

Bank_001 & 002 - Bravura, Cadrona, Elegy, Euros, Merit, Mesa, Nebula, Previon, Primo, Solair, Uranus, ZR-350

Bank_010 & 011 - Bullet, Glendale, Trashed Glendale, Oceanic, Tornado

Bank_019 & 020 - Cabbie, Fortune, Intruder, Picador, Sunrise, Vincent, Willard, Yosemite

    Bank_026 & 027 - Bus, Coach, DFT-30

    Bank_028 & 029 - Broadway, Hermes, Remington

    Bank_031 & 032 - Alpha, Buffalo, Hotring Racer, Hotring Racer A, Infernus

    Bank_034 & 035 - HPV1000, Wayfarer

Bank_039 & 040 - Blade, Buccaneer, Clover, Sabre, Savanna, Stallion, Voodoo

    Bank_041 & 042 - Quadbike, Sanchez

    Bank_055 & 056 - Kart, Mower

    Bank_057 & 058 - Caddy

    Bank_062 & 063 - Combine Harvester

    Bank_064 & 065 - Bloodring Banger, Monster, Monster A, Monster B

    Bank_069 & 070 - BF Injection, Hotknife, Hustler, Slamvan

    Bank_074 & 075 - Barracks, Dune, Enforcer, FBI Truck, Flatbed, S.W.A.T., Trashmaster

Bank_077 & 078 - Benson, Cement Truck, Dumper, Fire Truck (both types), Linerunner, Packer, Rhino, Roadtrain, Tanker

Bank_080 & 081 - Admiral, Elegant, Emperor, Police (all 3 types), Premier, Sentinel, Stafford, Stratum, Stretch, Sultan, Taxi

    Bank_082 & 083 - Dozer, Tractor, Walton

Bank_086 & 087 - Blista Compact, Club, Esperanto, Feltzer, Flash, Jester, Majestic, Tahoma

Bank_088 & 089 - Bobcat, Greenwood, Manana, Moonbeam, Perennial, Regina, Romero, Sadler, Trashed Sadler, Tampa, Virgo, Washington

Bank_092 & 093 - FBI Rancher, Huntley, Landstalker, Patriot, Rancher (both types), Ranger, Sandking

    Bank_094 & 095 - Hotring Racer B, Phoenix, Windsor

Bank_096 & 097 - Banshee, Cheetah, Comet, Super GT, Turismo

    Bank_108 & 109 - Bandito, FCR-900

    Bank_118 & 119 - BF-400, NRG-500, PCJ-600

Bank_130 & 131 - Ambulance, Berkley's RC Van, Burglar Boxville, Burrito, Journey, Mule, Newsvan, Pony, Securicar, Towtruck, Utility Van

    Bank_133 & 134 - Freeway

Bank_135 & 136 - Regular Boxville, Camper, Hotdog, Rumpo, Yankee

4. Install the sounds by using either modloader or SAAT. But, I really recommend you install it with modloader as it is incredibly easier.

Make a new folder inside the modloader folder and name it to anything. Place the 2 Bank_xxx folders inside the folder you created.

5. Launch the game and enjoy your new sounds.

Better spawn your car or steal one!

Just reply to this thread if you have problems with making car sound mods using my guide. (since it's my responsibility?)

(Here's an example of the finished product, you can use it for reference)

The same thing happened with me too! I was tried to convert the stock Lexus IS-300 sound from NFS Most Wanted (2005) to GTA SA (which replace the default sound of Premier, Police cars, Admiral).

I was recorded the sounds with my android phone, then changed the format of the files to "wav" by NCH Switch Sound File Converter in my PC.

But when I install the sounds using Modloader, the sounds still default. Only the deceleration sound changed to my modded one, others default sounds!

I have no idea how to fix it, I'm 100% sure that the length of the sound (0:00) is exactly same as the default one, and also I have renamed all files correctly!

Then why it wouldn't works? Please somebody explain...

Thanks!

Sorry for the really (x2) late reply.

Try doing this:

1. Don't record with your android phone, instead, try recording a video of the gameplay with a recording software in your PC, like FRAPS, Bandicam, Hypercam, MSI Afterburner, Camtasia, etc. Just record using audacity.

2. Import the video in a video editing software like Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier Pro, etc. Export it to WAV 16-Bit PCM.

3. Import the WAV in Audacity and edit the sounds. Everytime you feel like the sound is a success (and try to press shift+space to know if there are any pops), highlight the desired sound, and move to step 4.

4. Export the WAV using File>Export>Export Selected Audio. Export it to your desired destination.

5. Once you found the destination folder, click save, then there will be a prompt that allows you to change the credits of the audio file. Click on clear and then export.

6. Make sure to name it correctly. (bank_001, sound_001, etc etc)

Reply back to me when you face any more problems.

Oh its too hard, I think I can't do it but okay, thank you so much for the reply!

I will try it soon, thanks again! 😊😊😊

In case there are some people that want to start doing some car sound mods, here is a tutorial. (i just feel like writing one, so I wouldn't also forget how to hehe)

1. Record a gameplay in a racing video game, turn off all other sound effects except for the engine sound.

    Record these:

    Idle Sound

    Revving

    Run up to maximum gears

    Deceleration

    Top speed sound

2. Using some kind of sound extractor, extract the sound from the video files in any kind of format, but I recommend .wav .

3. Download Audacity, open the extracted sound, and highlight these things one by one, saving a sound before highlighting another:

    Revving

    Deceleration

    Idle sound

    Hard Acceleration

    Top speed sound

Then, export the sounds one by one and by this order.

    Bank_001

        sound_001.wav - Revving sound

        sound_002.wav - Idle sound

    Bank_002

         sound_001.wav - Hard acceleration sound

         sound_002.wav - Top speed sound

         sound_003.wav - Deceleration sound

Export the highlighted sound by selecting File>Export>Export Selected Audio, and export it as WAV (Microsoft) Signed 16-bit PCM.

Make sure to clear the metadata tags.

4. Decide what car sound group it would replace. Here's the list:

damn I need a guide for GTA IV / GTA V (I'd prefer GTA IV though x') )

as I'd love to make an engine sound mod but I've got no idea how.
Since I know noone will make that sound mod - for me. Its a special car though and I really want it to sound better than the washing machines you get in GTA IV

i feel like gta 4 uses an audio file that only lasts miliseconds, and that will take care of the rest of the car sounds (idle, revving, acceleration and deceleration)

pc/audio/sfx/streamed_vehicles.rpf

and yeah i agree gta 4 cars sound like vacuums and washing machines

try that and if you feel like it has a sh*t sound then just experiment with other different rpm's

I managed to create sounds successfully, the one problem I have is that, under certain conditions, the sound reaches a pitch so high that it glitches out and kind-of reduces the pitch to abysmal levels. This is quite annoying if I jump with my car, but on normal roads it's completely fine.

Same thing happens to me.

My theory is that the game wasn't made for high pitched sounds. If you listen to the car sounds, they're all low pitched and none sounded like screaming banshees that most >500 hp cars today sound like.

I will try to convert the sounds of a lower pitched car or even something as deep as Redd Pepper's movie trailer voice and check if the glitch still occurs.

thats because sound need to be 32000hz to work properly in game, do a resampling in audacity or another program you will like, and change project frequency to 32000hz in audacity and save the sound.

thats because sound need to be 32000hz to work properly in game, do a resampling in audacity or another program you will like, and change project frequency to 32000hz in audacity and save the sound.

I know the topic might be inactive at this point but I really need to know if you can add sound for an add-on car? Currently, my add-on vehicle reuses an infernus sound but I would like it to have it's original one

You can make this guide in Android phone plz😊😊😊

it should be the same when it comes to making the sound files, but how you install it is different (GENRL.osw)

also I think you need to convert the finished wav files into .mp3
