In GTA 2, there is a spraying garage called "Max Paynt". Its a reference of Max Payne

It's interesting how they mentioned an unreleased game.

Also, the fact that the game was mentioned twice in the series.

The language of the 3D games features quite a little bit of British English even when the lines are spoken by Americans. The most noticeable one is when Toni says "dustcart" in the mission Blow Fish. In American English they say garbage truck. One lesser known is the Musty Pines commercial in Vice City. The woman says "lucky dip" which is once again a British expression. In American English it would be "grab bag".

There are probably more but these are the two I can think of right now.

Nice find. Maybe it's because of R* North offices being based in Scotland?

That's one of the reasons. The other is the fact that Dan Houser is English and from what I know he (and Lazlow) wrote the commercials (among many other things)

To add more fun to the British English usage fact: Quite some of the (mainly mission objective) texts in VC, SA and LCS feature "while" written as "whilst", which is used in British English. For example:

PROP_2 - You cannot buy property whilst on a mission

GYM1_94 - Whilst running, lock on to a target with (Aim Weapon) then press (Enter/Exit Vehicle)

FERRY_6 - You can't use a ferry whilst on a mission.

EDIT:

Max Payne's first ever trailer was already out in 1998. Everyone knew about it.

Yeah, but the word of Max Payne being in development was out as early as 1997. Not to mention, the trailers the game received each year from 1998 to up until the release in 2001.

The reason the Brickade in GTA Online does a noise that sounds like it's releasing pressure when reversing, is that it's actually a reverse alarm, that unlike most trucks, uses a white noise tone. Apparently they are better that beeps, because they are easier to be heard and that it's also easier to estimate the source of the sound.

- Some of the radio commercials in LCS reuse background jingles from SA's radio commercials. For example, the Feel-All-Great Sports Store commercial uses the exact same music used in SA's Sprunk commercial.
And the Pilgrim's Pantry commercial uses a slightly sped-up version of the music used in SA's Commando Pest Eradication commercial.

These two are the only ones I could catch, but there might be more of them.

The theme tune of LCS is not even custom composed for the game itself. It's just a sped up and cut up version of this song, released in 1972...

Ouch... Oh well, blame Dangermouse for mixing March Popakov into A Dark March.

As much as I like A Dark March (and from now on, March Popakov), I think it would've been better if R* made a remix of III's theme song for use as LCS' theme song.

Toni's "Casual Clothes" outfit (or the "Traveller" outfit as how it's internally named) in LCS is just a cheaply retextured version of the "Leone's Suit" outfit:

6WMtZ4R.png

I replaced the latter outfit's body texture with the one from the former outfit and that was the result.
In fact, even the file sizes of both outfit models are the same, this includes the cutscene versions of the models too.

To be honest, now that I've discovered this, I find the BETA design of the "Casual Clothes"/"Traveller" outfit better than it's final one:

Yet another gem of an idea bagged up for the rewrite concept!

I am not sure how many of you already know this but the mission All Hands On Deck (where you help Cortez escape the country) is completely optional and you can unlock and complete Keep Your Friends Close without doing it.

Another fun fact: killing the 3 security guards in the stickup during the bank job will make Phil follow you around the bank (and help you with taking down enemies) and it will also give you a 3 star wanted level.

If you use a debug camera during the first cutscene of "Body Harvest" and quickly move it out of the room at the start, you can see some special parts of CJ's animation that are normally impossible to see:

The young, muscular Angels of Death MC bikers in standard GTA IV were intended to be Lost bikers originally, which is evidenced by their voice lines, as well as the Most Wanted side-missions, in which they're always accompanied by Lost bikers.

As a matter of fact too, a model of them has been re-skinned and used for The Lost's gang warfare backup members in The Lost and Damned.

If you enter "BIGBANG" after the cutscene where the golfer runs over the airport worker in "Jury Fury", the two juror confrontation cutscenes will play together one-by-one and the mission will be passed instantly.

Did you know that TLaD's BETA name was "GTA IV: Old Glory" according to the debug text files found in the PC version of the DLC?

The domain name "gtasanandreas.com" was registered in May 2002, which gives us insight into Rockstar's roadmap for the GTA series.

Moreover, they used the name San Andreas in 1997.

There appears to be a VCR (?) by Sony in B-Dup's first house and a Philips TV in B-Dup's second house. In both cases you can clearly read the name of the two brands.

Vice City Stories also uses the Los Santos Bank music for the Little Lacy commercials aswell.

- Uzi Rider is the only GTA III mission (excluding Give me Liberty) that will force a certain song to play on the Radio Station (Scientist - Dance of the Vampires on K-Jah Radio).

- GTA San Andreas and GTA V are the only games where you travel to a place that's not on the map (Saint Mark's - Portland - Liberty City and Ludendorf - North Yankton), funnily enough, it snows in both of them.

- GTA San Andreas takes place on winter as seen on the calendary during the mission Puncture Wounds and the in game hidden calendary.

- There are a lot of missions that share name, such as Lure (GTA San Andreas and GTA IV), In the Beginning... (GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas), Smack Down (GTA III)/Smackdown (GTA Advance and GTA IV), etc...

- In GTA III the FBI Cars have two different colours, a dark grey colour which can be obtained on roadblocks and the Portland emergency vehicles crane and a black one which can only be obtained if the FBI starts chasing you.

- The Laundromat of GTA IV can actually be obtained during Meltdown without failing the mission.

It was one of the original cities in GTA 1 based on San Francisco.

But my post (which Panzerman replied to) implied that an actual game solely based in a location named San Andreas was in concept well before 2004, dating back to at least May 2002.

Even the beta screenshots of GTA SA have a very VC look to them.

  • Character/pedestrian models and textures in GTA IV are handled differently from the 3D era titles.

In general, PC players, and especially modders most likely know about this, but some people might still be confused about the way character models are handled in the game. In the 3D era each character has only a model for each part of the body (mostly combined as one model actually), with only one texture for each character/pedestrian, whereas in GTA IV many (if not most) characters have additional model variations for each part of the body, meaning that, for instance, you might find a certain character more than once, but each time with different clothing models and/or even a different head model, and each model usually has more than a texture (usually three), and models and their texture variations are loaded randomly in order to implement as much variety as possible.

This idea was partially implemented in a simpler approach in Vice City Stories by the way. I’m not sure about other characters, but each gang has two character models, and each model has a duplication, but with different textures.

Yeah, R* Leeds implemented a ped coloring system in VCS that gives each spawned ped a randomized set of (multiple?) colors so they have varied "paintjobs" just like cars.

The IV system is obviously carried over to GTA V, whereas it also made its first appearance ever in Manhunt actually :)
