How does Liberty City Connect to the Mainland?

Are there any hints or possible clues to how Liberty City connects to the mainland? I know in V there were a few possible clues to how LS connects to the mainland, but how does LC? Anyone have an idea?

You use your imagination to make up roads and interstates that go to imaginary pieces of land.

inb4 liberty city survived a flood/liberty city is purgatory in the middle of nothing

I guess it has a connection via Alderney but that is not featured in the game.

I always imagined the Grand Eastern Terminal as being the only way for people to leave LC without taking a plane. Like long underwater tunnels connected to the mainland. I kinda wished Rockstar would have added some mountains in the horizon just as a flat texture or something, similarly to what Saints Row 2 did.

All GTA maps have been islands as far is I know, just don't think about it. I would limit a future GTA by an impassable desert.

Only the LC of GTA III could be "connected" in some way to the mainland in the north area of Shoreside Vale, but of course it's impossible to say if those tunnels had that function (in LCS there's only one tunnel that connects the Dam area to the east side of Shoreside Vale). All the other GTAs are set on islands that magically survived to a big tsunami :)

I am talking from a fan theory/ plausible explanation point of view. Like how Southern San Andreas is separated from the mainland by a river (the water north of Paleto Bay is called a river). So how would the map in IV connect to the mainland? Its cant actually be in and endless ocean

Game conventions. In game universe implies the existence of a connection of LC to the mainland (like a real NYC), but the player there simply does not need to be, so the map looks like an island city.

In lack of bridges either by tunnel or ferry. I've seen at least inaccessible train tunnels if I remember correctly.

Rockstar stated, that mainland is actually nearby. They didn't want to put unreachable land, and block it, from accessing, with invisible walls. Like GTA III or Red Dead Redemption. Easy answer. No flooding, no that stuff.

Mainland is there, but you can say it's invisible.

And then they put plane-crashing, ship-sinking, person-killing (and flying vehicles-destroying?) barriers in GTA5 lol.

Don't forget the sharks! :lol::lol:

Oh, and if you're wearing a Scuba Gear (added with the Doomsday Heist) and you go over 250 meters underwater, your character might be teleported to the nearest piece of land!

So it's a landmass actually undiscovered yet? Are there any models of the map that can give proof this is real? :panic:

No I didn't meant like that. The mainland is supposed to be near by, but it isn't. Rockstar don't want to put a unreachable, non solid land with invisible walls. This is the quote: "Rockstar Games stated that they avoided placing unreachable pieces of land in the distance to retain the city's "complete" feel."

BTW: in early stages of development, the whole Liberty State was meant to be included.

How Alderney could connect to the mainland always puzzled me. Everything east of the island is off the table obviously. The south has the docks with some sunken ships so there couldn't be imaginary land there (the convicts from Off Route also escape by boat and the bus is dumped there). North where the abandoned casino is requires use of a boat in both endings. The west is mostly nothing but in Tunnel of Death Aiden mentions sea air before he's killed, so they acknowledged the ocean there. Essentially, all four sides of Alderney canonically has water around it.

Always imagined that Alderney's freeway could connect another freeways to leave the state...

To be honest, I really wish they'd had some amount of countryside surrounding the LC area as they originally intended. Would have given a bit more illusion being a part of something bigger.

Hmmm nice bike

This doesn't just include upstate, but it's my old interpretation of how an entire state of Liberty + that bit of Alderney we see would look compared to the rest of the state that exists.

state_of_liberty_map_concept__circa_2009

I always figured that, much like in real life, you'd have a connection via Bohan with two small cities based on Yonkers and White Plains located nearby, Alderney would connect to it even though it's a different state, and then you head further upstate and find places based on Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Niagara and whatever mountains and forests you want to include.

And, of course, I included a connection to Dukes that was meant to be Long Island since they always mentioned "The Carraways," which are obviously based on the Hamptons. Pretty sure they would have called it "East Island," given that the area of Dukes based on Long Island City in Queens is called "East Island City."

I prefer a more metaphysical explanation, that a GTA map represents only selected highlights of the imaginary GTA world, so you wouldn't really try to find one missing piece that connects it to the mainland, you'd just reimagine the whole thing as being essentially New York City. 48 minutes are used to represent 24 hours, yet your actions appear to be in real time, so it follows that space as well as time is presented at 1/30th resolution. 97% of Liberty City is unseen, but would exist in between the parts we do see. A one-minute drive in Liberty City would be a 30 minute drive in New York City. A generic city block represents 30 similar city blocks that we don't need to see. Rockstar could make 30 different Liberty City maps representing the same imaginary city, which in their imagination is the size of New York City, but they can only make 1/30th of it for a game so they arrange it as an isolated few islands.
