EA literally went through a sh*tstorm because of this and this tool still thinks lootboxes aren't a big deal

f*ck the future of gaming man

Which future? There is none, at least for glorified franchises and greedy developers. Major AAA developers will pull this crap, lose their loyal fans and go backwards in terms of development. There were times when games like Forza and Gran Turismo used to sold consoles, now there are lootboxes in current Forza and no proper offline Gran Turismo for PS4. I used to own 2 consoles for these games for some time, but now if I want to race I can just launch Project Cars 2 or Dirt Rally. I'm pretty sure V is the end of GTA we knew and the next game will be built from the ground around micro-transactions, online connectivity keeping P2P of course.

Who needs lootboxes, when its pay to win or pay to keep up. You can't even enjoy a game nowadays and play it for a few months before they start with the extras. Most games have content dropping on Day 1,FFS. Your loyalty is based on how wide you open your wallet and not by how many hours you put into the game. These big companies, EA and Take2 are publicly traded so there bottom line is what matters. People don't have the self control to not spend money. What's surprised me is that people spend thousands of dollars on these extras, Ive seen it with Madden and I saw it back in the old days with PS Home, offer people something new and the reasoning stops, they just have to have the new thing. Gaming is revolving around and catering to the impulsive morons with no self control, and those who don't want to pay get the joys or their hobby feeling like a full time job.

I have seen what gambling has done to People in real life truly wish this on know one ,the same hooks, psychology, methods, used to addict people to gambling, I see them used in loot boxes, the horrid loot boxes even use the same sounds and colors to give out awards.

Last new day one release game I bought was in 2015 have only bought games on sale or second hand, also theres fair amount of games I have stayed away from.

Maybe just maybe if gamers stop buying new.... naaa who am I kidding !

Wow hey you think loot boxes can be a game mechanic. You know what's a better game mechanic? No loot boxes. Crazy, I know.

There is so much anger in this thread, perhaps less knowledgeable people might not understand why lootboxes are bad for GTA online and for video games in general?

The best GTA online example of lootboxes were the special crates containing beer hats. I've got four of them and sometimes wear one with pride. The only way of obtaining a beer hat was to rush to a crate drop (lootbox) and be the first to open it. The content was random and sometimes you got nothing special, but sometimes a beer hat. I never managed to get all six different beer hats, and I remember people who chased after every crate, day after day, and never got all six hats either.

In more modern times, the only way of getting certain in-game items has been to complete activities and open the lootbox at the end of it, but with absolutely NO guarantee that the item you really desire will ever be contained in an awarded lootbox. This can lead to thousands of wasted hours competing in activities that never give the items you really want, causing late nights and high levels of addition.

There's nothing currently like this in GTA online, and people should not be comparing lootboxes with microtransactions. Every in-game item can be bought at a price, so you can grind the game endlessly to get every item if you want, or purchase sharkcards to cut the corners at a real financial cost. Many people hate this system, but at least you are guaranteed to get the items eventually. Not with lootboxes - it's never guaranteed. The dirtiest tactic used so far by Rockstar has been the bunker research items, in which you never knew which of the numerous items you would have to research first in order to unlock it. It felt like a dice game and almost like gambling as It was horrible researching items you didn't necessarily want in order to progress to the next item, over and over again. Determined and committed players did eventually get the items they wanted so it's not actually gambling or comparable to lootboxes, just a very dirty tactic. Lootboxes, however, do not guarantee anything. You could be playing the next version of GTA online for the rest of your life and never get certain items.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but lootboxes suck over the long-term. At first they seem very appealing because of the 'magic' items contained within, until the items start repeating over and over again, and you never manage to get the items you really want.

I'm not one bit surprised to see this greedy dickhead defending this degenerate business practice.

And I hate government regulations, but even if have to admit that the government must step up and ban this sh*t from the entire gaming industry, it causes more harm to all games and the playerbase than it causes good.

I'm getting too old for this sh*t.

too old? If you're as old as me you remember the days when we needed to walk miles to the arcade to plop in quarter after quarter every couple minutes to hit the continue button before the timer hit zero.

Ok nevermind, now I feel too old too. Wanna play brigde before my afternoon nap?

Greed LOL. You guys are a special kinda funny!

So much more to this than just greed. While we are on the topic though, aren't we all greedy? Every f*cking human being always wants more than what they already have. Loot boxes could never be a thing if people didn't want them. If no person ever purchased a single loot box, then the concept would be moot, now wouldn't it? Think about that. Also think about the position this CEO is in when this company has to compete with everyone else in the industry who will also capitalize on loot boxes. What with he say to his share holders, when he announces that they plan to scrap loot boxes to keep a few lowly serfs happy? Come on folks, everything single one of us have the freedom to buy them if we like what we would be getting, OR to ignore it. Personally, I love the freedom to have that choice.

Since I don't play games with lootboxes (and don't imagine I ever will), this is pretty much my only knowledge of how they work.

So, yeah, I don't want them lol.

In-game RNG loot is not what people mean when they refer to lootboxes, and it's definitely not what Zelnick is talking about. That is solely about lootboxes that you pay to open. So yes, it's a form of microtransaction.

The saddest part to me is not that they want to do this. Of course they do. The saddest part is that many here would defend it - even pretend it's a good thing.

People here will ignorantly defend micro-transactions yet they realize this is too far for them, but if you're looking for people willing to defend every single scummy thing Rockstar and Take-Two do, look no further than r/gtaonline.

I guarantee that if they put lootboxes in GTA Online tomorrow, by next week there would be at least a handful of people here defending it as harmless at worst, or even actively a good thing (because "free DLC" and "companies exist to make money"). I have never liked the term fanboy, but what else can you call people that will stand up for crap that is rotting the entire games industry from the underbelly, just because their favorite developer indulges in it..? Sickening.

i dont think rdr2 would have lootboxes, atleast not randomized sh*t system that have caused so much controversy in other games...

i know for sure it would have some optional microtransactions, i just cant think of what items they could offer, rdr its a cowboys games so they could offert some sort of railroad bonds or gold(cashcards) but the setting of the game kinda limits what items they can release.

i dont know really, im buying the game for storymode anyway, so i hope the story is good!

Ha ok shilly.

The reason why loot boxes are a thing, is because people say "it doesn't bother me, no big deal". Loot boxes are a psychological trick designed to manipulate you into thinking you are getting something, for free or a low cost.

In reality, Loot boxes slow down the game. Rather than opening a box and not getting what you want, normally you should just buy what you want. Take Need For Speed Payback for example. Normally, when you want to make your car faster, you take a car and bolt on parts to make it faster. Easy peasy right? Well, ea decided to make the process for difficult than it has to be.

See, in payback, you can drive to the shop for a CHANCE that the store has a part that is better than what you have OR you can open a loot box for tokens, and use the tokens for a CHANCE to get parts that are better than what you have OR complete missions for a CHANCE to get parts that are better than what you have.

Now, early on, no big deal. But once your car starts equipping parts that are good, doing any of those things usually gets you that are the same level as your equipped parts with worse bonuses. So now you're grinding out missions and stuff to earn tokens to win parts. Or, you can buy loot boxes with real cash for a CHANCE of getting parts. What was once a simple mechanic, is now complicated in a easy money scheme.

Now imagine gta incorporating loot boxes. Hey, you want that scope attachment for your gun? Roll for it. You want bullet proof tires? Roll for it. You want that f*cking shirt? Roll for it. Sounds fun right?

Yeah, tell me about freedom when your decision of not buying lootboxes in a future GTA title leads you to a gaming experience in which you can only drink green juice and do some yoga routines, because the rest of the stuff is hidden behind paywalls and shameless gambling, and you start with no money like everyone else. Do you want to play heists? You'll need guns, roll some money to see what you get. Do you want to race properly? Roll some money, maybe you get a nice car. Or maybe not.

Oh, the freedom.

The funny thing is to expect a different reaction here. This board was created to talk about GTA sh*t, find ways to enjoy GTA titles even more, and that. This is not Bloomberg, we aren't supposed to praise someone's greed or explore new ways to monetize everything. Off course we're gonna roast a concept that ruins entire franchises and turns them into a different (and cancerous to society) thing. Off f*cking course.

@ DangerZoneX...

Belgium's one of the leading countries in Europe and has huge political influence in places I believe. Much like my beloved England and UK.

Small, but mighty, lol. At least that's my view of Belgium. Must admit though, very limited knowledge of the country aside some historical landmarks/locations personal to the family, and I enjoy their football, lol. Got 3 of their boys in my Spurs team at present.

100% wrong on everything. belgium is a mouse compared to the elefants germany and france but dont worry the EU is in its last chapter, we europeans will be free in a few years. the EUSSR is done and we are happy about it.

OnTopic: who is surprised? the blind fanboys as always ofc. no big news if you ask me just a confirmation.

So the fact that people (little virgin teenagers) are being victimized by these lootboxes justifies their existence? These people don't know any better and just feed their addiction by buying into lootboxes. That doesn't f*cking make it ok for lootboxes to be a thing. These corporate f*cks are just taking advantage of these teenagers' lack of knowledge about economics and the real world.

Sure, we have a choice but the fact that there's still people defending this sort of practice makes it easier for the corporate shills to shove lootboxes down our throats more than caring about giving us a "choice".

Don't be sorry, it has to be recalled, the bunker research thing is quite like lootboxes due to the incredible number of absolutly useless items that aren't military techs(paintjobs/weapons tints). Even the redundance of holographic sights and duplicata of different types of ammo, all that is very questionable.

To me it sounds similar to lootboxes system, close in term of principle.

R* also managed to push it a little more when they purposedly dripfeeded the Pick Up Insurgent Custom, releasing first the useless Karin Technical Custom and his equally useless technologies.

Remember EA's Ultimate Team from FIFA and other forms of loot boxes like the newest NFS which were still there after the Battlefront sh*tshow. I'd rather support publishers that don't implement lootboxes on their games like CD Projekt Red or many Japanese companies that wasn't named Konami and others who fell into sh*tty practices.
