Up2NoGood45
What is the online play like? Are there heists like in GTA? I guess I really don't know what the game is all about other than it's set in the old west. Thanks. 1898
Jason
No one knows what RDR2's online will be like just yet. RDR1's online was an evolution from the incredibly barebones GTA IV's by improving progression, adding things like gang hideouts to the open world and animal hunting challenges. My memory is vague on RDR's online modes but if I remember right it was mainly PvP stuff with some limited co-op missions. It was still pretty barebones and the majority of the fun came from just d*cking about really. GTAO then evolved on that further by well, you know what GTAO is. So who knows what RDR2's online will be, they undoubtedly learned a lot from GTAO. I imagine animals and hunting will be back in a bigger way, a proper character creator (RDR didn't have that), deeper progression and proooobably heists or robberies of some form or another? I reckon there will be a lot more dynamic activities to do in the free roam then GTAO currently has, given the direction of GTAO and the emphasis on open world content. Gray-Hand
The online for RDR online was primitive compared to GTAOnline. It was really just freeroam multiplayer. You didnt create a character, you just picked from a range of skins (cowboy, soldier, outlaw etc). You leveled up, but there wasnt really any narrative progression. GTAOnline from day one was far more sophisticated when it came to stuff like missions and businesses. The multiplayer deathmatches and other competitive modes were quite fun and were far more popular than their equivalent in GTAOnline. It was also completely ruined by hackers to the point that it was unplayable. The hacking in GTAOnline is not comparable. At one point some complete and utter f*ckwit hacked the game to the point that it was literally unplayable. Nothing was ever done about it. I expect RDR2Online to be more like (and superior to) GTAOnline and nothing like RDROnline Multiplayer was. UltraGizmo64 and Up2NoGood45

Nutduster
RDR multiplayer had very little to do other than shoot each other, and the sessions felt very barren, with less NPCs than single player and usually not many players roaming around either. Every time I played it, I mostly saw people doing gang hideouts (essentially the gang attacks from GTA) and spawn-killing each other. It's safe to assume that the new one will have something more inspired by GTA Online's excessive amounts of activities. Up2NoGood45
Cutter De Blanc
The online was a much simpler version of GTA Online's I preferred it Edited May 9, 2018 by Cutter De Blanc 1898, Russi4nW4rrior, rtie and 1 other
1898
The most fun I had with RDR was HC free-roam shootouts with friendly rivals. We'd be in a skirmish one day but on the next, they'd come help me out if I was in a jam and vice versa. We always played clean and never sent each other whiney-ass messages afterward. I miss it. R* has said this is going to be an all-new multiplayer experience so I'm expecting big things. Can't wait. Edited May 9, 2018 by 1898

Non Funkable Token
They probably learnt from GTAO so they'll give some more depth to the online part. Apart from the classical freeroam activities (hunting, cleaning hideouts, etc) I think there will be contact missions and heists serving as a "story" for our characters (they can use returning characters who never met John until RDR's timeline, like Seth, Moses, Nigel W. Dickens, Leigh Johnson, the McFarlanes, Herbert MOOOOOON.....). In fact, if RDR map is somehow included (even if it's online only), bringing characters to help you setting yourself up around New Austin/Nuevo Paraíso is the right way to go*. And a nice homage *They can use these characters whether if the old map is available or not. Seems like those would be fun, then trying to escape the posse.
rtie
I don't know about you guys but I had a ton of fun with RDR's multiplayer mode. Anyone declaring there wasn't much to do is a lying cack and has choked on the fat spoon GTAO fed them [see monsieur creosote]. RDR was more make your own fun while GTAO is a garish mall shoving cheap handbags and fake rolex's right in your kisser. The game's assorted terrain meant you had to rely on tactics foremost if you wanted to come out on top in the regular unpremeditated gunfights. There's nothing like propping up a couple of miles outside Armadillo with a rolling block rifle and scoping out the poor suckers who found themselves in the proverbial Armadillo gunfight. Okay, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't imbalances which parallel GTAO, namely the Mauser and High Powered pistol which if you were apt enough with you could absolutely violate scrubs. If you be said scrub your chief task would be to join one of the many posses other players are staking out. This was often the first thing I did when I hit a session - tried to make the biggest f*ck off posse I could with the intent to ravage as many poor souls as I deemed. Morale was always waning being that online players have an impatient disposition, so you always had something lined up for them as a good posse leader. If my gang was formidable enough I would take them down to El Presidio, capture the fort, then man the various cannons/ gatling guns arming the fort to rival anyone trying to take it back from me, be it law men, opposing posses, or lone wolves. I never had fun with GTAO PVP, it always felt like a chore to me. I rode into gunfights in RDRMP. If RDR2 multiplayer can capture this magic I'll be dead pleased. Edited May 10, 2018 by ARTHUR. I was a bit opposite with the way I played. I primarily was a lonewolf, who rarely got into a posse, that would go around and piss off as many people as I could. In the Hardcore Free Roam, since you could literally disappear off of the map, I used that as an advantage with hunting and tracking down other players who just happen to be alone. They very rarely found me and that was my fun. I hope there will be a Hardcore Free Roam lobby in RDR2 and I hope that the game will improve upon what RDR did for the multiplayer. rtie

Ash_735
RDR multiplayer was more basic but the community was much better for it, until Rockstar stopped patching the game and hackers took over, but before that RDR MP was one of my most played online games and I despise GTAO.
