The Uncle Appreciation Posse

He was everyone's favourite character in RDR (fact) and he's back in action in RDR2 as part of the Van Der Linde gang.

We will finally get the answers to the most important questions everyone had after RDR such as: "Why is Uncle so lazy?", "How does John know him and end up with him in Beecher's hope?" and the most important question of them all: "Why is Uncle called Uncle?". All of this will surely be answered in RDR2.

While we wait eagerly to find out more about Uncle during these 5 months, let's appreciate the drunken legend that is Uncle.

 

We first meet him after John reunites with his family along with his beautiful beard and some yellow stuff that we hopefully find the origin of in RDR2. We find out Uncle has been part of the Van Der Linde gang by the latest railer and IGN previews. And who could forget Uncle in Undead Nightmare as the first zombie John comes across.

 

He helped John with his ranch (although it took some threats) and died protecting John and his family which is still by far the most tragic death in any R* game to date.

Let's remember and appreciate this legendary outlaw and remember why we all think he's our favourite character from RDR.

As Uncle would say: "Why don't I gets a warm and tender embrace?"

I remember John giving him a hard time about the state of the ranch and his laziness etc.

 

Since it was within walking distance, it's not hard to picture Unc down by the river with a jug and a fishing rod saying "the hell with that f ranch".

There's no need to hunt him down, they know where he is and he's not going anywhere.

Might as well wait for John to kill the other three and kill them both afterwards, which they did.

I doubt RDR2 Uncle will be a waste, like RDR1 Uncle.  

 

Everybody has a purpose and a role in Dutch's camp.  If Dutch felt even in the slightest that Uncle was useless, he would have cut him out a long time ago.

I get the impression from this cap and RDR1 that Unc doesn't hold any of these people in very high regard. John was always giving him sh*t, probably the rest also.

 

Here his mind is a million miles away, probably had 'im a wife at some point.

Surely Uncle is based on Freddie Sykes from the Wild Bunch. A dirty, useless old drunk who doesn't seem to serve any purpose for the gang other than the leader is fond of him. (But the old dog later seems to be more resourceful than it would appear)

Edmond O'Brien, one of the best. Watch him in some of his older flix like D.O.A., then watch The WB or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.  You'd never know it's the same guy.
