@scalliano

Ninja Theory wanted to become a first party studio for Sony, but they rejected them. Naturally they looked for another opportunity.

What's bad about acquiring Ninja Theory? That their games will be coming exclusively to the Microsoft ecosystem?

And just out of curiosity. By the way I'm personally not invested in the Gears franchise, I only played GOW3 and I'm not a fan in any way, but... What is bad about Gears 5? Personally I'm not really looking forward to it, but the trailer they showed was pretty good, although making Kate the main protagonist felt a bit forced, at least for me.

@TheExecutor10The Gears 5 trailer just felt ... off. There's the fact they made Kate the protag, yes, but that wasn't really the issue for me. The character interactions lacked any of the comeradery that GoW is known for and the gameplay looked a bit too melee-focused. A bit, you know, Sony, almost.

My issue with the Ninja Theory announcement isn't an exclusivity thing (#multiplatmasterrace), it's Microsoft's apparent inability to manage its in-house teams properly outside of its three banner IP's. Sony is able to get the most out of its teams, as games like Horizon and Dad of War have demonstrated, but MS' first party titles have been lackluster a best in recent times, Crackdown 3 is more or less never coming out, and even the good stuff like Forza 7 had its own issues. Cuphead is the only real exception I can think of.

EDIT: @feckyerlife Actually forgot about CP2077 O_O Stick that in above Resi 2 ;)

EDIT EDIT: Fixed.

Yeah I know what you mean. When I first saw Gears 5 I immediately thought that Microsoft kinda wants to copy God of War. The gameplay looked good, but I agree the cutscene they showed didn't invoke any emotions in me. Though I still wouldn't call it a disappointment, it looks more promising than disappointing (for me).

Now… so Ninja Theory being acquired by Microsoft is bad because they can't manage their in-house studios or their lackluster lineup? I don't see how these things correlate. Ninja Theory wanted to become a first party studio. Microsoft needs more studios. It's good for everyone.

I absolutely agree that Microsoft needs more in-house studios, and while it's by no means the devastating news that, for example, an EA acquisition would usually be, it still concerns me. NT absolutely have the talent to give Xbox the shot in the arm it needs, but they need to be allowed to create, to do what they do best. MS has a habit of shifting its cash-cow IP's around its in-house teams with usually mixed results (The Coalition and 343 Studios come to mind) and my concern is that NT will be lumbered with a project they aren't suited to. Let them make their short, concetrated, narrative-heavy experiences and all will be well.

Damn, Smash Bros had like the most comprehensive showcase in E3. Getting all the characters back must be exciting for fans too. I own the last 2 Smash games and they're fun, but I don't have many friends to play them with nowadays and I just don't have the patience or enthusiasm to learn how to play properly so I could do well against randoms online.

Biggest disappointments:

Nice to see people are chipping in with their lists, here's mine:

1. MS/Xbox

Spoiler

Great stunt by opening with a Halo Infinite teaser, it's good to see that 343 are going back to the true Halo aesthetic a la Combat Evolved. Great idea to have trailers back to back with minimal talking, and a "cameo" from Todd Howard which was good. Crackdown 3, yes. FH4, yes. Just Cause 4, yes. Jump Force (even as a non anime fan) also looks interesting. And top it off with Cyberpunk 2077 (which I didn't care about until that trailer), great conference.

2. Sony and Bethesda

Spoiler

A tie between these two as they both showed great games. Loved Pete Hines' dig at the Walmart leak and the skit with Skyrim for Alexa. I'm not too big on Bethesda's IPs, but they did show some great sequels, and Elder Scrolls VI - I'm mean I'm not complaining. As for Sony, Marvel's Spiderman, yes. Ghost of Tsushima, yes.

3. Ubisoft

Spoiler

Just what I expected from Ubisoft really, no pleasant surprises. Assassin's Creed Odyssey looks interesting, and shows a new path that the franchise is taking. The Crew 2 is something on my radar. Not keen on The Division 2, but Skulls and Bones is interesting. Also, thumbs down for no Watch Dogs 3 (although Ubisoft's release schedule is full, so its understandable) and no Splinter Cell (which could be the same reason as WD3, or that it was really just a rumour).

4. Square Enix

Spoiler

It was good to see that they saved Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay for their own showcase, as I feared that they'd show the same stuff Xbox did. Just Cause 4 looks great. But where was the Avengers game?

5. Nintendo

Spoiler

Happy to see Reggie despite it not being a traditional conference. As someone who doesn't own a Switch, Super Smash Bros Ultimate looks awesome.

6. EA

Spoiler

Lacklustre, it was probably on par with last year's, even without all of the YouTubers doing their presentations. The highlights of that conference for me were the Battlefront 2 Clone Wars DLC reveal and the announcement of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.

Games I'm looking forward to:

1. Marvel's Spiderman

2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

3. Forza Horizon 4

4. Ghost of Tsushima

5. Just Cause 4

6. Crackdown 3

And for those that don't have release dates yet:

1. Halo Infinite

2. Cyberpunk 2077

3. Starfield

There's still time.

Remember many companies will announce their games this fall or in the first half of 2019.

But I guess it's also due to the fact that NextGen is coming 2020.

@scalliano

Ninja Theory said in their recent video that Microsoft gives them all the freedom they need.

Not a surprise, they're barely out at these conferences to show anything. It's usually just from their website

We won't see GTA6 for sometime, though. lol

Just see for yourself:

Bit like why Insomniac had Sunset Overdrive as a Microsoft exclusive - after having EA meddle with Overstrike (which ended up becoming Fuse - which flopped), they wanted full creative freedom over their next project, and to retain ownership of the IP. Microsoft was fine with that, in exchange for having it as an exclusive title.

Cyanide Studios Offers Some Call of Cthulhu Insights

Call of Cthulhu is built as an RPG, including a skill system and skill specialisation, relationships with NPCs, and its focus on story. Madness is not just a game system, it also drives the story. The story is a big focus and was written by Mark Morrison, writer of many of the top-rated Call of Cthulhu RPG books and scenarios. Players earn experience points throughout the game to develop their characters. Development and skills work just like a character sheet in the pen-and-paper RPG. There are about ten to a dozen different environments in the game for players to investigate and explore. These include an asylum, caves, mansions, a jail, and various others. The game’s mechanics primarily revolve around investigation. In some ways, the video game is not as flexible as the pen-and-paper RPG, primarily because there isn’t a Game Master to make situational and customised decisions about how events unfold and their outcome, including killing the character with players then perhaps taking over a fresh character. In the video game, the developers wanted to keep players attached to the protagonist and NPCs, and so the game is instead focused on the madness mechanic. However, the goal is to have players of the pen-and-paper game feel right at home with the video game’s skill system, mechanics, and atmosphere.
