Background Music

Grand Theft Auto III has got a very nice and realistic feature, which other GTAs don't have: background music! (only Vice City has got a hidden theme, that comes from the Church in Ocean beach).

2 of them can be listened in Hepburn Heights.

The first one comes from apartment complex next to Claude's Safehouse, and it sounds like as an early 2000s Techno song.

It's name is Floating Waves by DJ Roadrunner and you can listen it here (
)
The second one comes from the apartment complex next to a Stallion and a TOYZ van, and it's more Hip-Hop oriented. (
)
In Red Light District, there are 3 tracks.
2 of them can be listened at the cinema:
(
)
(
)
While the last one comes from Luigi's Sex Club 7. (
)
In Chinatown there is only one, from the Chinese Restaurant Roast Peking Duck, next to the basketball court. (
)
Another one plays at Ma Cipriani Restaurant (
), while the last one (and the most famous too) comes from Salvatore Leone's mansion (
)

So, this is a little list of the awesome background tracks of GTA III, if you know about other themes, please tell me!

I dont think this is entirely true. At least hotel and mall in VC has background music. And iirc church too (or maybe it's simple bell sounds)

Too bad only portland seems to be this detailed. Like they spent all development time on it and then rushed rest of map :D

Cool find tho!

Yeah, in Vice City and Vice City Stories there is North Point Mall which has a background theme, but it isn't something of "hidden" like GTA III themes.

Ocean Beach Church theme is the only hidden theme in Vice City.

Also there's the music off Old School in Lugi's mission The Fuzz Ball and some factories have sounds of machines and production lines.

There's even more ambient sounds like this left unused.

I was happy to hear background music in GTA V, I hope they will keep doing that in the next installment, it really adds to the atmosphere of the game. As weird as it is, every background music that I hear in GTA III are classics to me.

Yeah, but music comes from the Old School only during The Fuzz Ball, the same thing happens when in Chaperone Claude has to drive Maria to a rave party in Atlantic Quays.

In the list posted by Surya926 there is written that there is a theme at Francis International Terminal B.

Can anyone check to see if it is true?

So I checked Francis International Airport and you can indeed hear a very muffled voice talking from time to time. Never noticed that before!

I tested almost all of this stuff on PS2 some minutes ago, and the music is hardly noticeable with all the ambient sound there. But nonetheless nice find.

Anybody know the music that plays in the Hepburn Heights building where the Stallion and Toyz van is parked?

This is what you can hear when you're near the Terminal B entrance:

Wow, I never noticed that before. I guess it's supposed to be airport intercom announcements, but they couldn't even bother recording anything in English? Sounds like an airport in The Sims, or the gibberish sermon from that one Mr. Bean episode.

Anyway, there are another two themes in Hepburn Heights: Executive Relief & Meeouch Sex Kitten Club.

Mr. Wong's Laundrette has music too.

From SFX392 to SFX402 are all unused themes, but still present in the game's files.

Lock n' Stock

Luigi's Club theme is chilled as f*ck, yo.

For a game released over 15 years ago, the number of small details in GTA III are pretty astounding, especially for a series making it's first jump to full-fledged 3D.

GTA 3 seems to have so much more ambience than any other game in the series, it definitely makes the world atmospheric even though a lot of the places end up non-interactable.

As a less chilled example, we have the sound of a beating coming from the police station. San Andreas recreated that, now as a sight for all of us to see in the impound lots, but only being able to hear it makes it considerably creepier and more unsettling IMO. The only bit of visual evidence you've got is those blood stains in the Yakuza guy's cell. :miranda:

Yes. The background music is a nice touch to the game. Makes the world more realistic. I only have two complains: the fact that they are unused sound effects and the fact that the music from Mr. Wongs Laundrette is really low. I can feel the bass playing the loop, but I can barely listen to it. And it's a shame. Other than that, as I said, is a great touch, and I wish they kept it in other games from the 3D era (the only exception is the church music in Vice City).

It's actually possible to re-enable the unused loops. Take a look at VC cars in action.

You can listen them in the video "Grand Theft Auto III - Sound Effects - [PC]", there is also a list, so it's easy to find them.

Yeah, drum and bass and trance music were at their top in the early 2000s.
