So, according to GTA Online, ending A is not canonical ?

Smuggler's Run takes place after Gunrunning. Gunrunning made it clear with a quote from Agent 14 that GTA Online now takes place AFTER 2013.

(Can be listened to at 0:16)

However, GTA Online is most likely not canon to GTA V, at least anymore, because the Heists update brought in a lot of plotholes if both games were meant to be canon to a single storyline (Trevor already being at Los Santos, for example).

Ending C is canonical.

/thread

EDIT: Rockstar confirmed that C was canonical, so don't say it isn't.

Personally I regard Online and V as two separate entities, and their storylines are completely separate. Any "tie-ins" to SP are regarded as references to SP imo.

My online is a continuation of GTA 2, hence Deluxo's and Oppressors...

My characters escaped the nightmare landscape that was Anywhere city at the end of 2 and hooked up with their online pen-pal, Lamar.

The timeline of GTA Online is not as simple as saying "It's 2017 or it's 2018 or it's [current year]". Just how do you explain being able to sell cars to Jay Norris or Molly Schultz even though both of them died in the story? That's the main reason why I can't just let this whole timeline discussion go, it's eerie af.

I like to think that GTA V single player and GTA Online are in separate universes. Rockstar has done the idea of separate universes before during the transition from 3D to HD. Since Rockstar sees GTA V and GTA Online as two separate games, they probably see the two universes as separate as well.

OR

Single player may actually take place after GTA Online. If single player was stuck in 2013, it wouldn't be receiving the new radio stations. What about the new facilities and vehicles you ask? My answer is that there's also gameplay and story segregation in play. All the new stuff does exist in the single player universe in theory. We just can't access them because cash cards.

Bit like how Knights of the Old Republic lets you come up with a custom version of Revan as your player character:

596652-facesofrevan.jpg596651-facesoffemrevans.jpg

...only for The Old Republic MMO to set in stone that no, he's canonically a bloke who looks like this:

14244374986866.png

(which, lol - there's only maybe a couple of the original custom faces that look like the TOR version... :p)

Also, you might have decided to pick the dark side 'go evil and conquer the galaxy route' at the end of KotOR, but both KotOR 2 and TOR ignore that, and assume you did the 'correct' light side 'the good guys win' ending instead.

Same with The Force Unleashed - they do the light side/dark side branching endings because reasons, but the sequel works treats the light side ending as canonical. Same too with the Jedi Knight games.

There's normally an implication with these things that one ending is the 'correct, true ending' - normally the one where there's a proper resolution, where you get to achieve something more satisfying than just 'let's see what happens if we pick this branching path'. It's pretty clear even without the references in GTAO (which, to be fair, aren't 100% consistent or carefully-handled... :sigh:) that Ending C is the 'proper' ending for GTA V - both of the others just slam the brakes on the various story arcs, leaving some things unresolved, and with no real thematic closure (indeed, it's a bit of a 180, considering that up until that point, the game has been trying to show that Michael didn't just 'betray' Trevor - so it's rather odd to have the game end with the message of 'turns out people will just betray each other in the end', out of nowhere...).

Meanwhile Ending C feels like a big finale, tying off all the loose ends (so to speak!), taking down the main antagonist, getting the leads to (rather clumsily) muse on the themes of the story out loud (mmm, good old 'exposition masquerading as dialogue'... :p), resolve the tensions between the trio, and even finish with literal 'walking off into the sunset' banter. Really, the only way Dan and co. could have spelled out "THIS IS THE BEST, PROPER ENDING!" even more explicitly would be to end A and B with a 'game over/restart from checkpoint' screen... ;)

@Commander S Well said, sir. I still see the events of GTA V as completely inconsequential to the Online companion piece. But couldn't agree more about the obviousness of ending C.

Yellow Dog with Cone

There's also the fact that Ending C is the only one who has official artwork before release, so it's obvious that was meant to be the "canonical ending" from all three options, both Ending A and B are just "what ifs".

latest?cb=20130104183806

Now, for Online, up until Import/Export it was set before Story Mode, from Gunrunning to Doomsday Heist is set in 2017/the present day I guess.

We'll have to wait until GTA VI (or GTAO II) to verify GTAO's canonicity in the series.

inb4 someone mentions Los Santos being full of jets and flying cars in GTA VI lol

I think with things like selling cars to Jay Norris, it's just the current team of writers at R* North (who might well be the same folk as worked on stuff at launch, in fairness) just don't care about that kind of thing - or rather, whoever's making the decisions above them has a "eh, who cares?" attitude to consistency and continuity.

After all, it's funny how Madrazo's text messages went from sounding like this:

"Sometimes this line of work is not always pleasant, my friend. Those you love, those you respect, they betray you. A woman I trusted, a woman I paid generously, a woman whose hands are as dirty as mine - she is talking to the DA at the Viceroy Hotel. Silence her, and bring me a photo to prove it. And do not bring the cops to our meeting."

...to sounding suspiciously like whoever at R* handles Newswire adverts:

"There are two kinds of people when it comes to achieving and maintaining high speeds in confined environments. There's the surgically precise fighter pilot, and there's the maniac with his foot on the floor of a Phantom Wedge. This time, you're going to need to be both."

:sigh:

(also, why is Martin Madrazo getting in touch about ...wacky stunt tracks that magically appear around the city and then disappear again, with racers magically swapping from vehicle to vehicle like there's a very bored wizard doing it for easy money - ??)

In fairness, they're trying a bit harder with the Dispatch missions - so those at least read like the R* Newswire PR person doing a passable attempt at copying the style of whoever wrote Madrazo's original in-game messages... :p

"Do you know how hard it is to find a good translator? One with a solid grasp of every regional dialect in South America and a strong stomach? And then before you can say "extraordinary rendition" the IAA stick him on a plane to their favorite black site. Well, I don't want any loose ends. Get to the airport, terminate him, and don't lead the cops back to me."

Ending A is all Ive ever known, so far. I was disgusted with Trevor after killing that couple for no reason. So in my PS3 playthrough, I killed him and never looked back. Ive had the PS4 version since whatever year it came out, and Ive barely touched the SP in it. Mainly because I know it gets ignored for all the online vehicles not being in it, and the space parts search amounts to nothing. I barely play it when Online is down. I lived off of Trevors share of the cut after doing the Franklin assassination missions to glitch more money for them. Next time I get to the end in PS4, I'll chose C though.

Also, I guess I missed the memo where Online stopped pretending it was before Single Player. I guess I wasnt listening to the dialogue that closely.

Gta Online and Gta 5 are both cannon. The biggest confirmation of this is during one mission as Michael where you drive Lester to scope out the jewelry store. In a cutscene as they're walking to the car Michael asks if Lester if he has any contacts in Los Santos. Lester says yes he knows a few but they're too unpredictable and has to get in contact with someone else. He is talking about us, our Gta online characters. Evidence below.

Spectre "2K"

i imagine they tried to keep canon up to a point, but honestly i think after gunrunning they just pulled the f*ck it adjustment to give LS more weaponized vehicles than an occupied Afghanistan

Obviously, somewhere in the past the timeline skewed down into this tangent creating an alternate GTA. Alternate to you, me, and this thread, but reality for everyone else

Non Funkable Token

Everything happening from Lowriders onwards is located after SP. Pretty clear to me.

The "GTAO is an alternate universe" well, let's see. They'd probably mention online sh*t (especially the Doomsday Heist) in VI. Too much stuff to let it pass without making easter eggs, comments and jokes.

How does Trevor show up when he claimed he didn't show up in LS until GTA V?  Who cares?  Guess he lied?  Maybe he forgot about it when he bashed his head into the wall or when he smoked himself into a stupor?

How is it that we sell cars to dead people?  Who cares?  Maybe somebody decided to steal the names of rich, dead people on this highly illegal car dealing website so they wouldn't get caught?

Does Ron saying Trevor "went Vinewood" canonize an ending?  Probably.  Don't like it? Maybe he's just lying to himself since Trevor disappeared without him and he doesn't want to believe he's dead?

Like, for something that Rockstar gives absolutely no sh*ts about that people over think, people are also really uncreative in ways of explaining it to themselves so it makes sense.

Quote BTTF (any episode, not just 2) and you get a like.  Fact.
