So, according to GTA Online, ending A is not canonical ?

Everyone here knows that GTA online timeline take places in real time and we are in 2018 in the game.

GTA Online Smuglers Run take places in 2017, according to the introduction cutscene when you first buy and enter your hangar, Ron mentions that trevor has ''gone vinewood'' and that he is a guru/lifestyle coach.

So, just like Niko Bellic, trevor gave up on his criminal life and since the DLC take places in 2017, then (SPOILER) canonically trevor was not killed by franklin.

Sorry if this particular discussion has already been posted, but i want to know you guy's opinion on this.

This has been discussed to death... Never finished the story myself, and in all likeliness never will so I haven't paid much attention. What are the other possible endings?

Three options, Kill Michael, Kill Trevor, or kill neither and go after dude I cant remember his name

C was the true ending but online could be a separate timeline in itself and shouldn't be considered cannon in any way.

What's his face says during the humane heist finale that your attempt of that heist could be an alternate reality of him running that job, which kinda explains why you can do it over and over again.

I think ending C is all but confirmed to be canon. Assuming that Lowriders take place after 2013 we know that Lamar isn't hiding from anyone and he doesn't seem to be very close to Franklin anymore either. That's an interesting thing that no one ever talks about, in ending B it seems like Franklin starts to vaule Lamar more as a friend. God damn ending B was so good, but anyway the one thing that kind of f*cks with the timeline is Merryweather

Canon ending is whatever you like it to be.. but really just by logic it's the "good" ending where every character survives. Still gtao is like an alternate timeline, because it starts before the events of gta 5 but continues on from those in no way related to them.

I dont even care about what's canon and what's not in regards to story. I'm pretty bitter at the whole "no story dlc" thing. GtaO changed the way we will see future GTA titles. The focus will always be the multiplayer.

My canon ending is the one where Johnny Terry and Clay comes back from the dead and eats Trevor's brains

Please, don't tell me that you count flying mememobiles and orbital cannons as canonical part.

Do people really care about this?

Yes, shockingly enough the story is a massive part of the attraction of these games. Therefore people care about it.

The entire game is not a PvP kids playground, as much as R* wants it to be.

But they're 2 separate games. Trying to tie in timelines and make out it's something that has any serious importance just seems odd. I understand the story being important, since a crap story can make an otherwise great game seem pretty lame, but to take it to this level.... odd.

In the original thinking, Online was suppose to be prior to Single Player. That's why Lester said he had some guys in mind for the jewelry heist but they were just too volatile. In Judging the Jury Contact Mission the players are the ones who kill the Jury that Franklin is discussing to Michael when Madroza is introduced. The problem is, if we go canon with that, which online players did it? That's why it's impossible to canonize it.

So in effect your characters are in Single Player... That being said we clearly know that some timelines in the GTA universe do not share the same universe, such as the 2D versus 3D universe. For instance, why wouldn't Lester just have us buy some flying cars or a Vigilante for the Union Depository Heist and call it a day? Simply because he doesn't have that resource.

There are tons of examples where characters are in multiple universes, some even doing the same job, etc. but when you ask deeper questions about the canonisity of it there are a good deal of plot holes and questionable things just by you, the player, being involved in the universe and changing things. You, the player, are not a consistent in the universe.

We are seeing an attempt for R* to bring some canon elements to the "single player" mode, but it just can't ever cover all the bases once you drop online into the equation. Why? Because every single player in this room has changed the universe they live in.

This is really why I like adding a storyline to Online only and having it be its own entity that can effect the game's entire story down the road, not this backstory crap either. I want it to be built in Single Player and then evolve in Online and then we have a good point A to point B.

Just because you dont like them doesnt mean that theyre not canonical.

We have no way to know for sure, at least until the next game, I would think.

Ending C is all i know. One play through then i found online. 3k hours later... I don't have the foggiest what cannon even is. I've played 4 and S.A. and VC. No f*cking clue what I'm to expect next.

I gave up trying to figure out the time line. If it is current day, then Merryweather should be long gone. Mike, Trevor, and Frank should have a lot more influence over LS with all the gold they snatched. Simeon shouldn't be texting you daily about getting crappy cars, etc, etc, etc. Hell, even Lester should be retired, and have no reason to be working with Avon Hertz.

Of course they're separate. If they were the same game with a storyline that flowed and continued through them both as one, then this thread wouldn't exist. The fact that there are a vast number of differences and discrepancies proves that they're separate. What we're seeing here is people who can't accept that fact and are trying to wrap their head around how the 2 could fit together.

Simply, they do not.

Ending A was pure trash

C is obviously canon, but it feels like B is canon when Online is considered because

1. Trevor is alive

2. Merryweather is still around

Been a while since I played single player but I think that guy they went after was Devin Weston.

Googled that name and found this.

They are not. If you think that, the discussion is already over, because neither of us will get anywhere.they are 2 separate games / stories... or 2 dimensions if you feel the need to make it somewhat plausible, which it's not.

Point is the story and online don't have the same history and they aren't based off any real story, it's just a silly online game using the same assets without any ties to the story, just some references that may match the story to give you that impression.

That's why trying to make sense of it is so hard, or pointless really. Anyways it's all fiction people. Geez! I have a feeling some diehard fans would get mind blown if they found out Trevor, Franklin & Michael weren't their real names.

Don't get me wrong, it was a joke and I like the lore just as much as some players but once you separate online from the story both make a little more sense. I just imagine it like two movies with some of the same actors playing the same roles, being filmed on the same set and using the same props... but in the online movie I am the star and the plot isn't the same, just similar.

So I tell myself it's not a sequel, nor a prequel, it is two separate movies. Helps me sleep at night. :)

They most definitely do share the same history, it would be the future and present of both that would come into question. Also you talk about die hard fans and it all being made up and not mattering anyone but you're the one that created an explanation to satisfy yourself and then was upset when someone didn't co-sign it lol

huh upset? I just think it's 2 stories / timelines using the same assets. I do unďerstand the timelines cross paths but to me (imo) they are not the same story. Treating them as two stories makes online make more sense to me, even then the online story only seems to be written to help release new expensive toys. The plot just thickens every time a new set of toys needs to be hyped.

I don't wanna mix that up with the movie-like story with Trevor, Frank & Mike.
