Amazon Lists "The Art of Red Dead Redemption II"

Recommended Posts

Spider-Vice

In an unexpected move from Rockstar, some book retailers and Amazon seem to be listing an art book called "The Art of Red Dead Redemption II"! As known to everyone, Rockstar does not like releasing pre-release art or assets from their games, they like being secretive and leaving all the intricacies of their games' designs a secret.

Not this time it seems.

Starting today, several Amazon branches (US, UK, Germany) and even Barnes & Noble have started listing a book named "The Art of Red Dead Redemption II", to be released four days after the game releases, on October 30 2018. According to the page, this is the description of the book:

Makers of the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto series, award-winning Bully, Max Payne, L.A. Noire, and many others, Rockstar Games crafted for Red Dead Redemption II the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they rob, fight, and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America at the turn of the twentieth century in order to survive.

The Art of Red Dead Redemption II is the official visual companion to Rockstar Games' highly anticipated game release, and is a peek behind the curtain of Rockstar Games and its intensely guarded approach to the creation of the lush, Old West open-world gameplay. A first for this secretive company, Rockstar Games has released storyboards and behind-the-scenes inner workings of the game's creation, with a mix of detailed original art, concept, story, and character studies, sketches, and actual screengrabs of the end result that led to the creation of this spectacular game. The Art of Red Dead Redemption II is equal parts a collection of behind-the-scenes art of this epic adventure and a pictorial love letter to the western genre, and Red Dead Redemption II is sure to captivate both a new gaming audience and devoted fans of Rockstar.

Promising huh? The book will apparently contain storyboards (hand-drawn comic-book like strips to conceptualise scenes in the game), concept art (used to define a certain vision for an area, or a character, which the 3D artist will then use to transpose the art to the game), story and character studies, sketches and everything, which is an extremely welcome first from the oh so secretive Rockstar Games!

UPDATE: More websites are starting to list the book. It has also been listed in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Book Depository reports 150 illustrations for the book!

There's also rumors that to read the last 50 pages you have to buy a Bear Cardtm, the new in-game currency for RDR2.

Small-big update: The listings from Barnes and Noble and Amazon US have been removed. Rockstar Ninjas got to it.

this is interesting. the art book still hasn't been released. perhaps this could be a cut artbook that we never got to see considering the fact that it has been now a week after rdr2's release. i mean it could still come but i think that they would of put it in with like a special or ultimate edition or something.

There was also a book called "The Art and Science of Rockstar Games" around the time IV came out, but I recall they had issues with printing.

So when should we hope for the book to come out? October 30th has come and gone- I'm actually interested in seeing the concept art developed for RDRII.

I think it's all part of their roadmap until RDonline is out of BETA....They've started retweeting journalists again on Twitter, hopefully this means something.

The only reason I can think of the Artbook getting delayed is if a Story expansion is planned and includes art from it, other than that there is no reason not to release it.

Rockstar has an infamous history of announcing (or them getting leaked) concept art books and media and then them getting silently cancelled. There was going to be a multi-volume book about the Art of Rockstar Games in general and that just died.

I see, that's a shame I'd love to see unseen Artwork especially from GTA IV.

Agreed, had they released the RDR2 art book, I would have bought it.

Hmmm nice bike

They seem to really not be keen on showing off their concept art. It's kind of a shame, I remember looking forward to that multi-volume book coming out until it was eventually forgotten about. It's like they suddenly decide to keep it all a secret.

They're used to work in complete secrecy, so it'd be hard for them to suddenly open up. They probably felt great about sharing a little from behind the scenes, but then remembered that it's not their habit to do so and reverted back to their true practices. I've nothing against that, but they should just stop trying because it's not in the company's blood to come out of secrecy and show off.

:)

I honestly don't know what could lead to these sorts of things repeatedly happening. It has to be a top-down decision, as I doubt staffing issues would really have an impact on the release of a book (other studios seem to do it perfectly fine).

Paranoia by management? The Housers? Do they want to write the book themselves to avoid secrets leaking out? We've already have had rumors on how powerful management is in guiding Rockstar's internal decisions.

And that soundtrack- are they re-recording everything? Or are they having disputes over revenue splits? Also another thing that shouldn't take that long to release.

It's all business and HR. Take Two would be responsible for indefinitely delaying the books, talking sh*t about "showing weakness by admitting that some ideas were rejected" and "disappointing customers with content that did not appear in the final product". Betaz are a big hype train for some reason, I mean I find it fascinating myself, from an angle that in every game's development history there was at one point some perfect combination of elements that somehow turned out better than the final product, but the time I spend reading about them would truly be better spent elsewhere.

Doesn't look like the Amazon listing is really active anymore, but I love these art books. Hopefully it pops up again for pre-order soon.
