[GTAO] What Constitutes or Qualifies Someone as a "Cheater?"

This thread was brought to the forum, by the request of everyone's favorite hanky, CarimboHanky, so thank you, my friend for the inspiration!

But, it's a legitimate question, because at some point or another, any of us over a level 100 facing off against lower levels will indubitably be labeled "a cheater."

 

A Level 46 is running a cargo shipment across the map. You go Off Radar and blow his rims off, collecting your short reward, when suddenly, L46 sends you a message, saying he's reported you for being "a cheater!"

You're pinned down by a Level 28, a 101, and a 119 so you climb atop a roof and suddenly rain down fury upon them. You hear them over the mic calling you "a cheater" and that you used some kind of "switch" to transport to a roof top.

Or maybe you're just tooling around in Passive Mode, showing off your garages to a low level player. The player sees that you've got an entire garage full of really expensive cars, half of which are chrome. She asks, "How did you get all those cool cars?" and you reply, "I have my ways!" trying to be coy. Then, she comes back with, "Oh, I get it... you're like a hacker or a cheater, right?" Aghast, you quit the game and shut down your console, devastated at the idea of being labeled "a cheater."

 

But, in all seriousness of the game – what truly constitutes a player as actually being "a cheater?"

Is it lag switches? Mod menu's? Using Shark Cards? Multiple accounts? Wearing your dad's underwear?

For me, I know I've been called "a cheater," more times than I can count. And while I was gifted money years ago, I hardly think that makes me one. OR DOES IT?

It would be interesting to know what other people might define in GTAO as "a cheater," in any regard or facet.

And in my opinion, the only cheaters I've actually come across were on Last Gen and were the one's manipulating the environment, playing in God mode, and blowing up entire lobbies of people just because, well, they could!

Fun is always fun, but cheaters make having fun sometimes impossible.

Nah for me it's the one that exploits stuff for a fight like those who use lag switch, invisible god mode, that deluxo speed glitch etc basically those who take advantage in PvP modes using glitches

I play on PS4, so I don't encounter it, but using mods online is also cheating.

I'm a cheater, according to rockstar. I duped a ton of cars for profit and abused many money glitches over the years

 

I'm being punished, my car sales were limited to 1 per 30 hours for the past 15 months and an additional 15 if I understand

 

Plus I have no access to custom plates

 

Edit - also my cars with custom plates are selling for about 1 percent of the actual value. (My "legit" cars I bought, not the dupes)

 

I've never modded or used walbreaches, and ive rarely harassed players for no reason. The odd mugger, and the sniping challenge, but I only have a little over 1200 player kills. I created my character Oct 5 2013

 

I mostly just dick around in invite only and rearrange my garages. A few weeks playing this infuriating game as intended and I'm technically cheating again, into a solo lobby so I can sell my guns in peace

 

I miss actually cheating, when I didn't have to fight all the connection errors that come with playing with others, and it didn't take days to save up for something, I was actually enjoying the game then. Now it feels like work

 

I don't feel like a cheater though. I guess because my crimes never really affected anyone I don't really think of it as wrong

 

Someday I hope they'll stop supporting the game and I can go back to glitching and playing with my toys. Unless I don't get my plates back, in which case I'll retire in bad sport

Seriously Honestly though, when it comes to cheaters I always think of professional sports analogies, my favorite is the story of a NFL football superstar (the cheater) bringing a huge bag of footballs to the Super Bowl. When the game starts he just stands in the endzone slamming ball after ball doing the chicken dance as all the other players on the field and spectators stand there confused impatiently waiting for officials or security to escort him away... but no! Instead the scoreboard rises with every ball he slams, referees are fainting from blowing their whistles so much from announcing every touchdown he scores!

 

The the coaches yell "Yes, cheating is finally acceptable! Everyone grab balls and get out there!"

Then out of nowhere the commissioner of the NFL pushes a coach and interrupts to say "Screw it! Kick the fans out and dump billions of pigskins into every stadium across America, then everyone's a winner!"

 

In the end it's a sad story because there's not enough orange slices for everyone, grown men cry and nobody wins, especially not pigs.

 

Moral of the story / TLDR

IMO cheating changes everything and makes playing a game pointless, it can be fun though.

So I have been in an invite only lobby for most of the past week under the map with a deluxo, my objective was to explore the interiors and take some pictures, so am I a cheater?

 

a cheater to me is a person who's exploiting a bug in the code or modifying the code to gain an unfair advantage, that's about it. I can launch myself in the air in my invite only lobby and have a good laugh, that's not cheating, however I can launch myself in the air in a public lobby to win a freemode challenge, that's cheating.

Well, i never qualify someone as a cheater. And i mean cheater a cheater, like using some unfair mechanics because this is GTAO!
On the other hand - hackers. I don't even need to tell anything when a guy survives 5 headshots with a Heavy Sniper and shoots Lazer's cannon from his pistol.

Another great question, but I'm not touching that one, lol. The only thing I know I can say is that mod menu's are the one's to get rid of first. No place for that online what-so-ever. But as R* would rather abandon some and ban others that are innocent too. Believe me, there's just so much riding on RDR2 for me as a R* gamer.

 

Grinding, cheating, this, that... Freeloader!!!. Yeah, I'm definitely hoping to see vast improvements across the board. I'll play another game of their as long as I'm entertained, but there's just so much that takes that away, so we'll see. Not entertained when grinding, not entertained when another is cheating against me, and not entertained that by playing their game as put forth, I'm the freeloader, and therefor, a problem.

Cheating is simply violating the rules of the game to create an advantage.

 

Was it cheating to brick bst for your opponent? Was it cheating to dupe all those cars? Thats a matter of opinion, glitches are performed in game usually to break a rule or create an advantage, but they are in game and thus part of the game. It then switches to a matter of enforcement as the line is blurry.

 

So it becomes like speeding or smoking pot, hard to enforce and alot of people are breaking the rules.

 

If a cheater dupes cars to buy all the overpriced pay walls, prices raised for the sole reason of selling overpriced scam cards, is he really a cheater? Well as per a prior post, dupes can limit your car sales even selling street cars.

 

However if a cheater dupes, so he can orbital cannon people nonstop, is he a cheater because his intent to dupe was different or just because he dupes? He is most likely going to bad sport after many many votes and reports.

PPL using Wallbreaches and Modmenus are cheaters. All the other bullsh*t tactics they use like EWO, OTR, GO are sh*tty too but it's allowed.

 

They should just make the walls and ground a solid mass how it should be so nothing can move behind it. It's just lazy coding in my eyes from the devolopers.

My definition of a cheater is anybody who interferes with the hardware running the game or the game software to gain an advantage.

 

People who exploit the inherent features within the supplied game product are not cheating.

There are different kinds and degrees of cheating, I think. Modding - especially to kill or otherwise troll other players - is the worst kind. Exploiting in-game mechanics for something other than their intended use and taking advantage of programming flaws is another. This is the most common: passive toggling, EWO spamming, wall breaches, teleportation exploits, and so on. Money and dupe glitches are in the same category but are, IMO, the mildest form of cheating since other players are not directly affected.
