Is Monaco becoming Trashy?

Lately I am watching a lot of youtube videos about what it looks like an epidemic that is killing what Monaco used to represent to the Automobile world.

Not to long ago, if someone had to describe what Monaco was, the best word someone could use would be Glamour. A place where You could find Yachts docked in the Montecarlo's harbor, Rich people cruising with their Hypercars or their luxury cars around the Principality or parked in front of the Casino next to some Cartier or Bulgari store. Monaco meant class.

As i said earlier, something is killing all of this. A whole bunch of BMW M3/M4/M5, Mercedes C63/E63 ///AMG, Audi RS3/RS4/RS6 and many others with Swiss plates are roaming around doing burnouts, launches and i have also seen people drifting. While a bunch of virgins run around with expensive cameras even if it's in the middle of the street with incoming traffic to take pictures or video.

This is what i am talking about:

And yes, Many of you will justify that "It was just the Top Marques 2018 weekend, then it will go back to normal"... Which i highly doubt. Many people are going to see the videos and when they come to Monaco they will try to imitate the things they see on them. Kind of like this one guy who had the idea of take a picture like he was leaning on the Pisa tower and now all the tourists that go there try to take the same picture or get a little bit more creative.

And with this post i don't want to sound like an old man or a snob. I believe that everything has it's time and place and this kind of behavior shown in the videos belong to a place like a Supermarket parking or even an Industrial complex NOT Monaco, a small place where automotive history has let it's mark big time.

What do you guys think?

With all the hypercars in Monaco, this was bound to happen. Being in California, with the huge car culture we've got here, I've realized one thing. A huge majority of car guys just love to show off.

Give them an avenue to do that, and they'll pop up in heavy numbers.

Retail/commercial development is constantly happening here in Silicon Valley. Each time a popular place gets built up, it becomes a hang out for guys with their cars. Whether it's a new coffee shop/restaurant/mall, etc. Eventually you get morons ruining it with engine revving, and burnouts. This brings in police who when sit idle off in the corner of the lot waiting to ticket these morons. After a while, the actual enthusiasts who are just there to grab some food and drink with their friends get tired of the creeping cops, and find another place. The morons somehow end up following, and the cycle repeats.

That's just people behaving like people.

By the way, I didn't watch either video, I'm just going by your post.

I was there last year with work. Quite a lot if it isn't that fancy anyway but I saw no more dickish driving of performance cars than I do any time I'm in W1 or other posh bits of London.

Turns out that wealthy, uncultured people like showing off. Who'd have thunk it?

Seeing that Switzerland has very heavy traffic laws, I'm not surprised that they gone wild and run amok during the Top Marques to unwind. Although the Mercs, Beamers, and Audi drivers who tend to show off makes me sick.

Yes.

But this type of behavior is quite recent. I mean you didn't have idiots like these on the videos I posted 5 years ago. Monaco was a Principality where everything was fancy but with class. Now as you said is full of "Nouveau riche" that are ruining Monaco. And it's sad because Monaco has brought a lot of history to the Automotive world both on Formula 1 and Rally.

Yes the Swiss government is not that of a car enthusiast.

seing that a place is not the exclusivity of the wealthy tend to give me a good opinion about the place personally. you see, even if i don't judge them, i never understood how can some people drive around with owned 2 millions cars, while there's so much poverty around the world. with time i came to the conclusion that these people don't do that for the fun, but simply for tax evading. concerning Monaco i prefer a street with a bunch of tuned M3 or Mercs, and people around that look like me, than a street with only 1 million euros cars with people coming from another planet in them. and btw if you want to see rare vintage cars come to Dordogne 😉. old and rare cars heaven . last week i was discussing with my hairdresser, and he told me that he just saw a Delorean meeting recently, right next to his shop. he told me there were Deloreans all over the place 😄. there's not a week without seing a rare car. early 20th century cars are common thing here. eyes candies 🤩

There are very few car meetings in Brazil, and when there is one it is a sound system competition. No rare cars or anything. The only real car meet is Bubble Gun Treffen once a year.
