Also, not only are Niko, Johnny, Luis, Tommy, and Claude my top five favorite PROTAGONISTS, but theyre my top 5 favorite CHARACTERS within the whole series!

I only played GTA 3, Vice City & San Andreas.

 

Claude is the one I like the least.

 

CJ is my favorite.

Favourite: Niko for obvious reasons, followed by Luis and Tommy. 

 

Least Favourite: Trevor. When you have to force an on-screen death and nullify the events of a previous game to make your character look 'badass', but instead comes off as a crybaby coward who just ruins the experience of the entire game. He just ruins the game for me.

Favorite: For me, it's between Tommy Vercetti and Niko Bellic. Tommy was like a less drug-addled Tony Montana who continuously made smart decisions that took him to the top, instead of the outcome Montana had. As for Niko, I think he's hands-down one of the best-written protagonists they've ever created they created at the time. He definitely had the most well-developed backstory, which leads into the events we see taking place in IV.

 

Least favorite: Trevor was a complete mess of a character, Franklin was really boring, and Luis Lopez was a douche most of the time.

Gonna make some enemies with this statement, but I feel Tommy Vercetti is overrated. Sure he's cool and awesome, but it feels as though his only real flaws are that he's hot-headed and that he's somewhat naive. If you ask me, he and Johnny Klebitz are the worst protagonists. As for my favorites, I find all three GTA V protagonists to be entertaining in their own ways, and I also find Luis Lopez and Niko Bellic to be very well written characters, arguably the best written in the entire series.

Least: Trevor. Even Claude is a better written character than him.

My Favorite's are Tommy, Niko, and Claude. (My Opinions About These Three.)

 

Niko: Because he's basically unstopable, plus he has a dark and tragic turn of events that makes him choose who to kill and who to keep alive. The choices at the end will break your heart.

 

Tommy: It's just like one of the lyrics from a Tears For Fears song "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." He basically rules Vice City.

 

Claude: How can you guys not like him? Does he complain? No. Does he annoy people? No. Does he kill innocent people for no apparent reason? N- Wait...I have to rethink this one...either way, he's way better than that annoying as heck and sadistic jerk Trevor.

Favourite far and above any other is Niko. Trevor and Tommy are also excellent, Johnny, Luis and Michael very good.

 

Worst is Franklin. The others meh.

I have mixed feelings on Franklin. On one hand he's really dry and dull, but I blame that on the fact he becomes a third wheel to Michael and Trevor and the writing doesn't really develop him anymore. On the other I can see what R* were going for and I like he had/has ambition to better himself without coming across as a whiny, bitchy, "Feel sorry for me" underdog type like CJ.

 

Personally I would place Franklin in the grey area of protagonists. He doesn't do enough to be considered great or even good, but he's still likeable in some ways.
