To PC players, where is everyone?

Question

Drift123

Hi,

I just tried GTA V online for the first time on PC. I joined a session and although there are 1 or 2 players temporarily joining and leaving my session in free mode, for the most part it is empty. Is this normal for PC? Judging by the Steam Stats and number of players I was expecting free mode to be full of random players that you could battle with. I live in Canada and am fairly close to New York. Is PC online dead, or am I missing something?

If your session is still rather barren i suggest joining an active crew which will put you in their other member session whenever you go online.

too busy playing in solo-public/invite-only sessions.

nah, I'm kidding. For real, tho. I've had issues like joining sessions with few players and while I didn't do anything about it it somehow "fixed" itself and can now join sessions with 25+ players.

I think if you try and find a new session couple of times you'll find a full one, if that's what you're looking for.

My internet is decent. Wireless but I get below 50 ping when playing CS:GO for example.

I tried rejoining sessions a couple times and it didn't seem to change anything. Most I had was 2 players join and leave within a couple minutes.

So do you guys typically find full sessions in free mode or do they tend to be empty, and you need to invite people?

From what I've seen there isn't any way to select a specific lobby to join or region...

Oh you should definitely go straight wired instead of wireless.

Oh you should definitely go straight wired instead of wireless.

I know its ideal but the connection provided by my landlord is wireless. Though I'm pretty close to the router and get good connection in my other games. I doubt that is the issue in this case.

Where are they?

- playing newer games with better online support, no cheaters, no false bans and moneywipes
- playing in empty solo sessions

but srsly - sometimes gta just sucks and you just have to restart the game otherwise you will end up in empty sessions all the time.

or its just your internet connection.

GTA is different than other games. It doesn't matter if you have 100 other games that run perfect online, GTA is very picky with it's connection. You see it all over this forum everyday, some players are always having issues, and some never have any.

Since a few weeks back sessions def been unusually sparse. Think the main reason is that scores of players are breaking off to solo public sessions to flee modders or idle in their bunkers to make money off the 2x event passively. There's then not enough players to fill up all of these sparse sessions since the game can't merge them once they've been created. Too be fair ~8/10 full-list sessions are super cancerous with tryhards, shamelessly abusing passivemode, macros and EVO/suicide, plus scores of cheaters ruining everyone's time. so it's not surprising people keep branching off into barren sessions with just a few friends in them.

It's a testament to Rockstar's delicate sense of fine-tuned game mechanics to have conceived a multiplayer experience that people rather play without multiple other players.

What aim preference have you got? If it is free aim then that`s what it is like.

Pause > Online > Find new session

Do that a couple times until you end up in a crowded session.

Also sounds weird but in your graphic settings there's an option for Population Density, you could try turning that up all the way. I turned mine down for performance reasons and now I get put in smaller lobbies often. Not sure if it's that but it literally changed the day I lowered that option.

You'll know pretty quick if it's your connection because you'll be lagging and droping the session once you get close to other players.

I'll have to check my aim setting, its on the default setting whatever that is. So is there any way to choose what public session you join or does the game force you into whichever one it chooses for you?

forces you but if you have friends or crew members in a session the matchmaking monkey tries to group you with them.

If you use keyboard & mouse you want to choose free aim, otherwise everyone using a controller will have the upper hand with auto-aim.

It's normal to join empty sessions, GTA O on PC has a lot of players. You can find good sessions, but don't be surprised if someone spawn a fire pit in your body.

Check your ingame Nat settings, if it is strict type you will thrown into empty lobbies.

Also go to graphic settings and set population density full, matchmaking also considers that setting

How is your NAT, open, moderate or strict? From Social Club: Home (overlay) -> Settings. If you can find only almost empty lobbies and players often "leave the session", that's your problem. Players haven't disappeared.

Population Density only changes the number of npc`s it has nothing to do with players or sessions. Everybody streams the world that surrounds them those with lower to minimum Density just have less traffic and npc`s around them. If you have the lowest setting and get near somebody with the max Density setting you will have the max Density too because his/her setting overwrites yours.

OP check your Nat Type if it`s "Strict" you will barely find any players in sessions. If you can`t or don`t want to get a Open Nat Type (Deactivated Firewall in Router) at least open these ports.

These have to be open for all Users! PC, PSN and Xbox Live.

GTA Online requires the following ports to be open:
TCP Ports: 80, 443.
UDP Ports: 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458.

Xbox Live requires the following ports to be open: Xbox Only

Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)
Port 500 (UDP)
Port 3544 (UDP)
Port 4500 (UDP)

All games published by SCEA (first-party) and the PlayStation Network may use the following ports for communication with SCEA (first-party) game servers: Playstation Only.

TCP Ports: 80, 443, 465, 983, 1935, 3478, 3479, 3480, 5223, and 10070 - 10080
UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, and 10070

If you don`t know how to do that google your router.

The best way to do this is with a Local Static IP Adress don`t use DHCP for P2P Games. You have to enter these Ports into your Router and link it to your Client (Your PC) with a Static Local IP Adress.

After you done that you will never lose connection to sessions and find much more players.

Here an example of my Local Static IP Adress.

IP Adress: 192.168.2.150

Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.2.1

DNS Server: 8.8.8.8

DNS Server2: 8.8.4.4

You will have another Gateway the Gateway also shows the IP Adress for the most part their the same.

Just google it if you have no idea how it works.

All my Devices at home have Static IP Adresses. :D

This Site might help.

Okay well good news...I completed the first 'job' in online mode and now the session shows up as full. I guess I just had to complete it first before other players would show up...

Try swapping sessions, if you never encounter other ppl, then consider getting better internet.
