True Crime New York City

What I find most surprising of the True Crime series is that reviewers seem to agree that L.A. was better, while anyone with any common sense would say N.Y.C. was better (assuming they could get the game to work).

L.A. was one big joke

Despite me not playing much of either, TC: NYC was one of those games I regret not playing more.

TC:LA was this game a mate had. He hated GTA but for some reason, he latched on to this game and almost tried to "sell" it to me as some great GTA killer. The massive map was just ridiculous and purposeless. It made you really appreciate Rockstar's ability to condense a map to the most relative parts of a city.

I played True Crime: NY. I think I rented it and that's why I didn't complete it or got distracted with other games then never got around to playing it. I was really surprised about the gunplay at the start. Since then I watched some videos and it really does seem like a dark and gritty game.

I don't get the hate for L.A, it's hand to hand combat & gun combat was SO fun & better than most shooters & actions games on the market in 2003. driving was also a lot smoother than crappy NYC which had the worst driving physics possibly of all time as far as GTA type open-world games go.

NYC had a ton of potential but was clearly rushed out & was horribly clunky & buggy to such a point that it literally killed the series.

Thankfully we got the fantastic Sleeping Dogs, but I can see why they dropped the True Crime name after trash NYC.

As far as I'm aware Sleeping Dogs was never a real True Crime game. The game was an original IP created outside of the True Crime series. It was originally called Black Lotus. When Activision purchased the rights, they thought if they release it as a True Crime (a more known brand name) they would get more sales.

True crime series is not bad actually. It is like gta police version..It has potential and should continue.

The Coconut Kid

The best thing about TC: LA was how I failed the final mission (or one of the many different endings). I was thrown from the top of a skyscraper by a North Korean dictator and basically had Christopher Walken tell me how sh*t I am at this game as my character plunged to his death.

Fortunately I had much more luck with TC: NY. Like someone above said, tons of potential but as glitchy as they come. My favourite feature in the game was the street crimes. You could play through the game and the map would turn into a red coloured, crime infested sewer, so your chances of dealing with random crimes or a situation developing from frisking pedestrians were much higher. Of course, when you eventually got called to the more interesting crimes, like bank robberies or hostage situations, the game would glitch out when you tried to enter the building!

I read randomly back in the day and I think I saw some people complaining about how Marcus is almost like another regular black thug but have kung fu skills.

The only reason I prefer TC:NY over LA was because LA suddenly had that hell stuff. I was like "WTF why do have fight demon concubines all of sudden?".

TCNY was a bit slower paced but overall vibe was more enjoyable for me. I also like the gores. I remember how Marcus blew up in car, he got thrown out of the windshield with his feet off, respawned nearby, the burning car he used still there, picked his own foot, and threw it at a lady ahead. Good times. Also another time I visited a weapon shop, bought a long handled blade, tested it next to the shop owner, and chopped his hand off.

The Mysterious One

I have defended True Crime NYC many times because while I do see that the game has numerous bugs, not to mention the driving is clunky, among other things (Seriously, the non-playable cars can't slow down if I am driving in the intersection even with the siren?), but I enjoyed what Activision did with the game. I also liked Streets of LA when I was younger and I actually went through a playthrough of it a year ago. Anyway, what I liked about NYC was the Good Cop/Bad Cop system that it had. While in Streets of LA, it just encouraged you to have enough points to get the good endings and then there were alternate paths, in NYC determined the ending depending on how you played the game. I also liked how there were different storylines to go through before the end. I also found out on YouTube that the dialogue changed during the ending bits of each story depending on which gang you went after. Usually, I went in the order it was presented.

It's such a shame how there was never a third game. I can't confirm this as this was a Wikipedia entry, but it seemed that Activision were going to do a third game with Marcus as the protagonist again, but the sales and critical reception prevented that from happening. I would have liked to have seen a third game, maybe have Nick Kang return as a mentor type to Marcus.

Just one more thing, but when I played these games, there were some parts when they poked fun at Rockstar and GTA. Of course, this series is no more, and I guess Saints Row took over that void in which they poked fun at the competition.

There's actually beta footage of Sleeping Dogs from where it was still TC: Hong Kong which shows Nick Kang. I'm not sure if it's on YouTube or anything. It maybe a fan animation using TC:LA characters, but I'm sure no one would go out on their way to make such animation. If anyone wants to see, maybe I can try to find it and upload it.

I can't change controls in this game (Im playing on pc)

A menu pops up with Walking,Driving and Menus but when I click on it,nothing happens

https://prnt.sc/lb84db

What's wrong with the controls the way they are now?

I play on PC as well and I personally don't find any issues with the PC Controls

I used to play the sh*t out of this game on PS2 back in the day, loved it. Back then I didn't care about how much of a buggy mess it was at times, it was just a fun ass game with a great map. I loved it significantly more than Streets of LA. I remember the story being great.

So many people say that TC: SoLA is better, but I found TC: NYC to be far superior in most ways. It's a very solid "GTA clone." Like, not Saints Row 2 or Scarface: TWIY "good," but still not too far behind them. The Manhattan map was near-perfect at the time of the game's release. It could have done with more unique interiors in exchange for less "enter interior" markers, but that's definitely my opinion. It still had far better variety and graphical fidelity than its predecessor. Also, TC: SoLA's story got way too ludicrous when you start fighting demons and dragons in a crime-fighting game.

It was mainly the music they used with the goth one. It also didn't help that I kept on failing it over and over again that it got dark outside irl lol.

This sh*t terrified the f*ck outta me. Kept on failing that mission at the church and this kept on playing along with those dancing fighting goths and it was getting late outside damn right this sh*t was terrifying.

Sorry for the bump.

Middle Class Roadman

I loved this game when it came out back in 2005. Still remember that scene in some club where the protagonists tries talking to this guy who's sitting down and his head just falls off his body - that made me jump out my skin.

I tried playing this again a few months back on PC and man... this didn't age well. It's a lot jankier than I remember. I spent a ton of hours on my PS2 on this game. I remember you can go into the Grand Central Terminal and everyone there would be carrying drugs and you can just arrest everyone easily.

It is kinda funny how they predicted True Crime Hong Kong/Sleeping Dogs all the way back then.

The strange thing is that Sleeping Dogs wasn't originally a True Crime game. It was it's own game called Black Opal. It wasn't until Activision bought it that they rebranded it to a True Crime game because they thought it would be easier to market it based on an already existing IP. Activision then dropped it and it became Sleeping Dogs.

So that video is kind of blowing my mind.

Looking back, this game was a bug infested mess, the driving physics were awkward, and everything felt clunky. Despite that, it made up a huge part of my childhood. I will love this game regardless of all those things because it was special to me. I recently got a PS2 again and I cannot wait to dig into this game once more. I wish there was some way this game could be remade for new consoles.. I would be happier than a pig in mud.

Okay, weird situation i remember i had this game when i was younger and that's pretty much when it came out. I just remembering playing the first mission and stuff, then i borrowed the game to someone (idk why because i thought it was fun) i now got the game again i happend to get it somehow. I was trying it on PS2 and the movement is soo damn slow, and it's so dark all the time... Is it that slow sensativity or is it my controller? I had True Crime LA and i remember playing that only literally free roam been watching the story of that game and it was pretty fun. But now i have NYC and need to get a answer.

All I remember about this game was the bomb ass soundtrack and the cool arresting mechanics.
