couldn't he of easily been croatian or bosnian?

Niko Bellic was a Serbian. Not a Croatian or Bosnian.

Niko was born in Yugoslavia, thus this is his nationality. We may of course debate whether Niko is Serbian or Crotian (there are hints leading to either of them), but I guess R* never cared enough to pay attention to such detail and they simply mixed it together.

Examples:

- Roman refers to their native language as Serbian.

- Both Niko and Roman are Croatian names.

- Roman is getting married to Puerto Rican woman in Catholic church - which means he's more of a Catholic than a Orthodox Christian.

- Niko describes his participation in the war as more of a guerilla warfare, which could point into direction of Croatia as well, since Yugoslavia (consisted mostly of Serbia and other countries still being part of Federation) used regular army at the time of the war.

they could easily lived on Serbian border with Croatia. i wouldnt really nitpick on those details, nor call em oversights.

I'd say it is a very well thought out how he/they are portrayed. They didn't want to make either of those, or any other nationality. They gave him charasteristics of both sides, and told us that he is eastern european. That is enough info for the player, nobody gets offended and everyone who is concerned with that war gets a hero/villain. Not just one.

There's no real confirmation as to what his true nationality is and I think that was the intention. All Rockstar wanted us to know was that he is from the Balkans and so they reference multiple countries from that region to keep it vague.

I think he's definitely a Serb for the following reasons:

1. At the start of the game, Roman says to Niko 'I must brush up on my Serbian'

2. I have heard many Serbs confirm he speaks Serbian, but the pronunciation is horrible

3. Niko gets an e-mail from his mother who typed in Serbian to him.

4. I know he's not a Croat as Serbia and Croatia aren't exactly best friends and it would be odd seeing a Croat speaking the language of his country's not-so-best-friend country

Also, R* pretty much confirmed he's a Serb

That R* support answer is pretty priceless. I have to give them that. At least this topic is not about Niko being Russian. Even in this forum there are many who actually think that he is. And that is a bit ignorant. Or more than a bit.

I have always thought that Niko is Serbian. There is enough evidence to point you in that direction. But it is also true that R* could have put a little more effort in making him and Roman more authentic. I still applaud that they tried to do something different.

Also when you think that many people believe that Niko is Russian - do you think that making him more authentic would have made any difference? Off course some people (especially in Europe) would have noticed the difference, but the masses wouldn't notice anything like that or even care.

I have always thought he was Serbian there are just so many little things pointing too it. He makes a point of saying in the game that hes not Russian, he makes that clear in the gunshop when he picks up his present, "Im not Russian"

This. He probably doesn't care, plus we have Catholics as well.

Also a really sh*tty reason: There isn't an Orthodox Church in LC for all we know.

P.S. Niko has a Serbian flag when playing darts.

That Rockstar support post is fake as f*ck. I get the temptation to sh*t on SJWs without doing any research but I mean come on.

There's no record of it archived or otherwise, Rockstar would never be so outright hostile to a consumer no matter how dumb they're being, and it's full of spelling errors. This has been making the rounds on right-wing bullsh*t sites for the past year and gets debunked every time. Some of you are so damn gullible.

The reason about the church isn't the best one, I know but it's better than nothing. I'm not trying to prove that Niko isn't Serbian, but that not all details fit either way (like names for example).

While playing darts there is indeed a flag on the fletching, yet without any other markings. Just three stripes, white, blue and red. While serbian flag has this colours, so does russian and slovenian. These three colours, just in different order were used on many flags of the nations being united in the Yugoslavian Federation.

He's Serbian R* said it loud and clear. The darts he plays has the color of the Serbian flag, same with the motorcycle helmet he wears.

I mean, Bosnians and Croats would never say they speak Serbian, ever. Also, a Serbian flag without any markings and only colors is also accepted. It's in the correct order as well.

Not that I hate Croats or Bosnians, I'm just stating the facts.

Early on I assumed he was Serbian. I think it even says so in the game. Interesting idea about the wedding though.

As for the name, Niko is short for Nicholas, of Greek origin, and definitely present in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. I'm not that familiar with the region but it seems the name Niko could equally be Serbian or Croatian, while Roman is not particularly common in either but popular in Russia, which probably explains why it ended up in the game. Regarding their combat experience, paramilitaries and guerrilla warfare were employed by every side.

In the end I guess it was just a minor story detail for the developers. If they cared more, for starters they should have made him speak his mother tongue better. Although I don't even know the language, it sounds very artificial to me how he for example says "neverovatno" ('unbelievable', I think; sorry if the spelling is off). Also, it seems he forgot how to pronounce his own last name the moment he stepped off the ship: there should be a soft sound like the /ch/ in English, and not the hard /k/ sound ("Bellik"). This is one of the the only two minor gripes I have with this great game.

Oh. Never mind then. I have seen a lot of people correct others when they said he was European and then they say he's Serbian and I forgot that Serbia was in Europe. My apologies. But i would identify him as a Serb. http://www.debate.org. There's even some sh*tty website arguing about this.

I agree Niko is a Kosovan Serb, not because R* says so, but because last year I discovered GTA4 was based on the real life exploits of Dyncorp - a Manhattan based CIA splinter corporation which deals in the CIA's dirty work. One such exploit was the human trafficking and organ harvesting through the "Yellow House" just over the border from Kosovo in Albania but run by Kosovan Serbs. The organ harvesting was even alluded to in the game in the mission "Have A Heart" where you sell Manny's organs.

Dyncorp by the way, is represented in the game by U.L.Paper. In the UK (where GTA is made) there's a company called Dyno-rod which specialises in unblocking drains - what blocks drains? Used lavatory paper - U.L.Paper. A bit of R* humour there. Video about head of Dyncorp Steve Feinberg:

I discovered the real life GTA story while helping with a crowdsourced info gathering investigation into the Clinton Foundation, the youtube playlist of which can be found here

Not only does the investigation detail Kosovan operations, it details the Montreal biker gangs, which is what The Lost and Damned was based on - and a possible reason for Trevor being a Canadian in GTA5? Video about the biker gangs

The series also delves heavily in the Awan brothers scandal at US Congress and their use of MS-13 gang members as hitmen. When George Webb discovered at one point in the investigation that the Awan brothers were being financed through Dubai, it all came together at once. Yusuf Amir is based on Imran Awan and Luis Lopez is his MS-13 gang member-for-hire.

Video about MS-13 gang members for hire by foreigners

So there you have it, GTA4 was based on real life and was more than likely signed off by the CIA as a propaganda tool. Happy 10th anniversary

Hard to say. Since he's Serbian, his name (actually Niko Belić) should be pronounced "Belitch", but people, even Roman, call him "Belick". His accent is somehow a mix of Russian, Ukrainian... I really don't know what was that, but the Serb accent is not that exaggerated.
