Rafae

GTAV most profitable entertainment product ever.

"After loitering in the top-sellers chart of every platform its been available on for the best part of four and a half years, GTA V is now the most profitable entertainment product ever, according to analysts.

Raking in around $6 Billion since its release in September 2013, GTA V has made more money than any book, film, record or video game ever released, and shows no signs of stopping.

The game has sold about 90 million units in its lifetime, placing it third on the all-time highest-selling list of video games behind Minecraft, which has sold around 144 million, and Tetris, which when you include all of the random phone ports has sold closer to 170 million."

Say what you want about this game but this type of success is absolutely staggering.

Is this The Guy?

That’s insane. If I recall correctly this doesn’t include microtransactions, I may be wrong.

Well, my money is in there somewhere lol. Including the 2 copies I bought for the ps3 after i accidentally stepped on one

Fun 2

I like to believe that money goes into improving the quality of their games.

It's a good sign for RDR 2 as it will cover all the costs of development.

I'm sure people will complain but it's better than opening 30 studios, have them make 50 games and milk the games that become successful.

And yet R* refuses to spend a single penny on server fixes for GTA Online, including a better and more efficient anti-cheat in getting rid of hackers running amok.

@ Rafae... I do hope...

Mega cash though. More than I anticipated, lol. I hope it does bode well. But am cautious too. Much of that success came before 'public only' and long before PC users started to be hampered more too. They need to invest in addressing those issues, as, like old gen, abandoning stuff isn't ideal going forward.

Hope they don't settle.

There should be blank checks when they develop these games. Almost like the development of a major movie franchise. Theres no excuses now, dont like how they just let SP to die. We all know for a fact another GTA isnt coming anytime soon. Why not revive the SP.

Because it costs money to make and it's not guaranteed they'll make that money back.

6 Billion $, yet they are still unable to develop an anti-cheat system that does not punish innocent people.

This is sold-in, not sold-through.

Im guessing the number of games actually sold to customers is much lower

Leave it to a shady company to use shady statistics to overinflate their sales figures

Yeeeeah... I'm willing to cut R*/Take2 a certain amount of slack for some issues in GTAO, engine and design stuff that isn't easy to fix post-launch.

But when you look at SIX BILLION BUCKS on one hand yet on the other hand years of shoddy, ineffective customer support, easy fixes left unattended for years, and overall bare minimum level of upkeep and housekeeping... it kinda pisses me off. There are plenty out there who do much better with much less.

RDR2 and GTAVI will have absolutely no excuse for such practices to continue. They probably will though...

To be able to shift 90m units of anything that has the price tag of a AAA game is more than impressive.

As much as R* p*ss me off, whether over treatment of fans or the low effort sh*t like missing headlight casings and seemingly infinite Adversary Modes, it's probably a privilege, as a gamer, to have been active during this games lifespan.

I don't know how much it says for other publishers and devs that over the course of the last almost 5 years not a single viable alternative has hit the market. But that has obviously done GTA no harm at all, from a sales perspective.

I just hope GTA Next doesn't get bogged down under the pressure of T2 attempting to chase the figures of GTA V.

Not surprised.

Sell a game with limitless potential

Half ass monthly content and charge a premium for microtransactions

This will be the new standard of gaming.

It clearly says about 90 million sold in the article

Regardless, even if the figures may be slightly off it's still the most profitable piece of entertainment.

Apperently when GTA offers probably over 100$ worth of free DLC, people rather be pissy with it. Not sure to any of y'all, i rather get free DLC that requires a little hard work that you can still get, for free, mind you probably a lot slower, and have microtransactions you aren't even required to play the game. But NooOoOoOoOO, lets just keep on bitching because that tickles our weenies and makes us feel better because we'd rather have it NooOOOw.

For your answer hamwithcheese, if this is the new standard of gaming, then I'm all in.

Edit: to op, it is well deserved. Good job on R* for creating a masterpiece they have.

Yes, because sold-in means they sell the games directly to retailers like Walmart and GameStop, who then sell them to customers. Sold-through means the game is shipped to stores (who can subsequently return unsold products) and sales figures are only calculated when they are purchased by the end-user (the customer)

All this effectively means is they shipped 90 million copies of GTAV. Since you can go to any Walmart in the world and find half a dozen new copies of GTAV, its clear 90 million copies have not sold to the public.

How many are sold to the middle man is completely irrelevant because they arent the end-users of the product
