So, since 10th year anniversary of GTA IV is coming very soon. Why don't share some appreciation for this awesome game? :)

Just write, what do you love, like or hate about Grand Theft Auto IV. Let's begin!

I gonna start: I love the city, the characters. Niko is my favorite protagonist. And just the feel of the game is amazing. I like more serious gta game. Not everyone liked that. That's why maybe Rockstar came back to the San Andreas type of feel, with GTA V.

But I love GTA IV, not matter what haters say. This is an amazing game. Happy Anniversary!

What I love about GTA IV: The physics, online, story, characters, the protagonist (Niko) and almost everything.

That LC immersion. You can feel the city, the people, the characters... They can even become part of you. It's like you are part of the game. An that was something very special. R* nailed it with this game, with L.A. Noire, with MP3 and with RDR.

Cars, diriving physics, songs (especially Vladivostok and San Juan), that deppressive feeling in Liberty City, Niko, story, Roman, even Vlad and Dimitri! I love everything related with GTA IV.That game made me melancholic at the age of 10 in 2008 and I don't regret it lol.

  • 4 months later...
  • Still holds the title of the best GTA story.
  • Cool characters.
  • Dope atmosphere.
  • Great driving and combat mechanics.
  • Glorious physics.
  • Strongly enjoyable euphoria.

The list goes on...

Unlike the previous titles (which are obviously great), it's the only in the series where both the protagonist and antagonist are great, in the same time.

GTA III: The first 3D title. Characters weren't as developed as in the later titles, obviously.

GTA VC: Tommy is a great protagonist, Sonny is just fine.

GTA SA: CJ is just fine, Tenpenny is one of the best antagonists in gaming history.

GTA LCS: Toni is simply a talking Claude. Torini is just a random mob guy who got in Salvatore's way.

GTA VCS: Victor is cool, and Martinez is just fine as an antagonist. The Mendez brothers seemed better written than the latter though.

-Best story of the series.

-Awesome protagonist with a great backstory and personality.

-Best cast of side characters and antagonists.

-Liberty City.

-Physics and driving, combat mechanics.

-The atmosphere, dark and gritty just suits LC and the story.

Except the economy (limited options to spend your money), I love almost EVERYTHING of IV.

I'd like to add:

Grand Theft Auto IV was the moment when the GTA franchise matured;

  • Grittier and grounded story, with a couple of decision choices and more believable characters.
  • Extremely improved AI.
  • Cops aren't just an obstacle to the player anymore, but they actually act like cops; arresting criminals and securing several areas and buildings.
  • No more bribe floating objects. You want to lose the heat, find a way to escape from the cops.
  • Instead of floating heart objects, healing comes from first aid kits instead. It's still possible to gain health by eating and drinking though.
  • No more floating adrenaline objects.
  • Pickup objects don't float in the air no more, they're lied down on the ground.
  • If an activity is not relevant to the protagonist's story or personality and lifestyle, then it's a non existent. Paramedic, firefighter and pimp missions? They're all gone. Vigilante is still not a crime based side mission, but it was introduced well to fairly fit into Niko's personality and lifestyle, especially due to the fact that he's a professional hitman who's mostly looking for money, sometimes doing the law's job through hacking a police computer.
  • Bridge security.
  • Limited ammunition. (unless you complete the game by %100.)

It surely doesn't have as many side-missions as GTA San Andreas, but it got more quality. Those fewer side-missions it has were greatly tied up with the game's story and/or the protagonist's personality and lifestyle. Not to mention that the improved driving, physics, AI, fighting mechanics and also the use of Euphoria and Ragdoll, and the addition of the cover system, made them WAY more enjoyable than the side-missions in the previous titles.

The thing I like most about GTA IV as well as EFLC is that it’s not the corny graphics GTA and not the online cesspool GTA, but simply the GTA we all know and love.

There's something that only GTA IV (and TLAD) top-notched for me: feeling the protagonist's situation. Even though I got to know Liberty City very well, I still get that immigrant feel every time I hit a new playthrough, and feel like the city is new to me again.

Thank you for sharing this - that was a brilliant read! I'd love to read a "where are they now?" version of this and other profiles; it's funny because it's also believable.

There is interesting subjective stuff in gta iv. The landscape of the wealthy part of the Liberty City in the beggining of the game may be a metaphor for the "American Dream" depending on the way you look at it, feel it. The songs too, Queen's "One Vision"'s lyrics mentions:

"One man, one goal
Ha, one mission
One heart, one soul
Just one sore loser
One flash of light
Yeah, one god, one vision"

Reminds of someone I know...

Or The Who's "The Seeker"'s lyrics:

"They call me The Seeker
I've been searching low and high
I won't get to get what I'm after
Till the day I die"

Both songs are on Liberty Rock Radio.

I always think the same when those songs come on! I don't know how much is deliberate and how much is coincidence but it does seem like as well as just being chosen to be a good selection of songs and fit the general atmosphere there's quite a few that seem like they were chosen very specifically to fit Niko and the storyline. Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues, Gil Scott Heron - Home is Where the Hatred Is, Maino - Getaway Driver, Hello - New York Groove, Seryoga - Liberty City The Invasion (which was written for the game/ for that purpose) are a few others I get that feeling from.

i like how it has less content the other gtas yet it’s still the most complete with its missions and gameplay to me, i mean almost nothing feels out of place in this game.

When Rockstar made a realistic game with a very complex history and DLC's with amazing pysics, cover system, driving, interiors, characters, vehicles and amazing city without having more than a city, airplanes and customisation options for vehicles, tatoo parlors and barber shops, buyable safehouses, gang wars, huge mansions,a lot of clothes ,the jetpack and a happy ending(and maybe more things I forgot) is an archivement and then you know Rockstar made the best GTA.

GTA IV of course.

And TLAD&TBOGT best DLC's.
