Huge controller issues with Rockstar games :(. Please help!

Hi everyone,

I just decided to come back to GTA V and I ended up with the same issue I always had with this game on PC: controller support is getting completely broken if I even slightly move my mouse or press any keyboard button while the game is running :x.

The characters are moving with the same speed as if I'd be using WASD instead of an analog stick, A button starts recording the gameplay etc. but the worst thing of all is that the camera, so the right stick, is getting locked in place for whatever reason.

This is really getting on my nerves and I'm getting so frustrated that I'm soon gonna' uninstall it and never play the PC version again.

Also, the same crap happens with Max Payne 3. Is this some sort of an AWFUL RAGE Engine error which they never cared to fix? I could "live with it" you'll probably say by not touching my mouse or keyboard when the game is running.
I thought about it myself but both games can be very pick when the "1st mouse movement" gets registered. It most of the times gets registered when I take my hand off from the mouse after starting the game :x.

Did anyone had a similar issue ever before with Rockstar games on PC and would be able to help me? I'd really appreciate it :).

use only xbox controllers if you got no big experience messing with drivers, they auto install and if you use official dongle you wont get any error ever. also you should let windows install defender, suggested software updates and monthly quality rollups from updates then windows has always newest drivers.

I've tried both games with both an Xbox 360 controller, XOne controller & PS4 controller, all of them have the same issues. Why did you assume that I'm using a 3rd party one out of the box? I've got all my drivers up to date, and I had this issue with GTA V ever since it was released on PC. Same goes for Max Payne 3.

Surprisingly GTA IV doesn't have such issue. I can switch between controller and keyboard on the fly and controls aren't getting messed up (I installed it just to check whether it has the same issue given it's the same engine).

then another thing i can quess is your computer dont have inatalled monthly rollup update, ive done is that and never had any controller or other compatibility issues.

if you have installed monthly updates and still having that issue then there is more to check if they exist from control panel, programs:

Microsoft .NET framework newest version,

Microsoft visual c++ 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013,2015, 2017 redistributable packages

Microsoft xbox360 accessories 1.2

Do not blame me if it still fails, ive tried to help. but people are rude instead of appreciative.

I wasn't being "rude" anywhere :x. Where did you get that from? All my drivers are up to date as I just finished assembling my new PC 3 days back.

I'm into programming myself and simply see no reason for ANY video drivers etc. to be affecting the controller support in a game. Also, only GTA V & Max Payne 3 have this problem. No other game does that, so I'd say there's some sort of a problem with RAGE Engine itself. Long story short, all 3 controllers which I've tested (360, XOne & PS4) have the same issue of becoming all messed up once I even move the mouse slightly.

I'm having no issues switching between keyboard/mouse and controller with GTA V, though I'm not sure exactly what you're describing with your issue. What do you mean that the camera is being locked?

The issue is (I already finished Max Payne 3 somehow today so the topic is about GTA V only now) that as soon as I move the mouse even by a tiny bit or press any button on the keyboard when GTA V is running, the gamepad controls are getting all messed up.

I got no control over the characters movement speed depending on how much you push the left stick so it is like playing on keyboard where you have one speed all the time. B button works like Y and vice versa. Right trigger zooms in and shoots at the same time, Left Trigger initiates stealth mode, A button starts recording the gameplay etc. and the camera is locked in place.

What I mean by locked in place is that whatever direction I move the right stick in, it moves in that direction for about a few milimeters and gets back to its default position in the middle of the screen.

None of it happens when the game miraculously doesn't register the mouse movement when I take my hand off of it after launching the game exe. Also, weird enough, GTA IV doesn't have this issue for me. I can switch keyboard and mouse to gamepad in it without any of these side effects mentioned above.

Heck, I even thought that it could've been an issue of running them under Windows 10, but from what I recall I had the same issue back when Max Payne 3 was released (I had Windows Vista then) and also when I was using Windows 7 when GTA V came out for the PC.

I'm seriously lost as to what may the issue be. My PC is just 4 days old right now and I've spent the past 2 days installing all the necessary updates for everything I could think of.

The movement speed seems normal to me. Running requires the use of the A button. The triggers and button actions do not seem normal, nor does the camera return.

That said, there are a large number of options in regards to control schemes and, I think, camera behavior. Have you tried changing those up?

Fiddling with the controller options does nothing as the only thing you can change in there is different camera speeds during FPS mode etc. There's nothing that could even remotely be affecting what is happening with the controller bindings upon touching mouse or keyboard.

Also, I'm not being rude here, I do get that A button is for sprint, but when you're playing with a controller there's something called "analog movement" that keyboard and mouse will never be able to reproduce. This basically means that your character movement speed is determined by how much do you push the left stick, This is getting messed up as well for me when pressing keyboard buttons or moving mouse even by accident.

I'm honestly lost. No other games are doing that. I've tried 3 different gamepads like I've already mentioned in my 1st post in this thread and it happens with all of them. One keyboard button press or the tiniest mouse movement when the game is loading (even during GTA V copyright text on launch) and controller input is going haywire in the way which I've mentioned above.

im as baffled as you are, "its darn impossible" is all i can say and perhaps there is still something in drivers or extra game related software that is interfering, ive reinstalled and tried windows 7, 8 and 10 to see how each feels for me then stick with 7 because that is most comfortable but i never had any controller issues for any game, been using same xbox 360 gamepad with official dongle from gta san andreas to gta 5 and every game works like it was on xbox.

all i did was install newest .NET framework, 2008 visual c++ redistributables (other versions will be added by the program/game prompt when it needs them), directx 11 and xbox 360 accessories 1.2,(controller compatibility softwares on older games) and monthly rollup windows update that is latest available.

I don't think that GTA V has analog movement on foot, at least in terms of movement speed. I can't recall seeing it at all. I also can find numerous forum posts online discussing the game's movement system and complaining about the analog stick not being used for movement speed. This post from these forums, for example.

The camera doesn't auto-center when on foot, but it aggressively does so when driving. If that's the behavior you are describing, then again, it's not a problem with your keyboard or controller. Again it's standard game behavior and you can find a number of posts complaining about it. This one, again from these forums, for example.

Not sure what to say about your perceived controller remapping, except to perhaps try resetting the gamepad settings to default. I'm not sure that you haven't just unknowingly switched to an alternate control scheme.

I don't want to be an ass so please don't take it this way ;), but these controller bindings are only getting messed up when I start the game and use anything other than a gamepad. If I somehow manage to turn off my mouse (I've got a wireless one) prior to the game starting I'm having no issues whatsoever. If I leave it on due to, let's say, forgetting to turn it off (duh :p), any tiniest mouse movement messes the controller up completely until I restart the game.

I've started a support ticket with Rockstar but I simply left it as it seemed that I was being answered by a bot as all my replies were simply ignored. Though luck I guess. I'll just have to be super fast with turning off the mouse xD. Still, it seems to be a problem with the RAGE Engine version on which Max Payne 3 and GTA V are running, since GTA IV doesn't have this issue for me.

I'm saying that two of the things you are describing as screwed up only at certain times sound like just the standard way the game works. I can find nothing that references analog stick movement speed control as existing for this game. And unless your camera problem consists of sudden auto-centering when on-foot, again, it's how the game works.

But the last issue--the one that seems dependent on the game recognizing you as using a kb/mouse, from your description does sound like non-standard behavior.

Are you using something like xpadder or joy2key? I expect not, else you would have mentioned it.

I'd suggest deleting your settings file and letting the game build a new one for you with the idea that something is somehow corrupted and is recognizing multiple control schemes at once, leading to a single input having multiple effects.

I quit the game months ago but recently returned. I have always used my PlayStation Dualshock 3 controller to play GTA V on the PC, with the help of the SCP drivers to make it all work.

But when I returned a few days ago, things are different now. The controller works for every other game I own, however when I start up GTA V, the controller stops working shortly after I make the choice of going into either the online game mode, or the story mode. I can use my controller just fine to make that selection... but before the game actually begins, while the loading screens are still up, there's a windows alert sound, and a popup telling me my controller has been disconnected... and no matter what I try from that point forward, I cannot restore the controller and make it work in GTA V.

For some reason, in one of the recent game update patches, Rockstar has done something that causes an issue with my Dualshock3 setup, and it must be Rockstar because this doesn't happen in any other game.

While I can still play the game with keyboard, it's so much better just from a comfort standpoint for me to use the controller... so this is preventing me from playing the game completely. Oh well, since I had quit the game already, I guess it's no big deal, but I figured I might as well add my report to this thread even tho I offer no solution to the problem.

You should probably start your own thread instead of adding your issue to OP's post.

That said, after that popup, have you tried using the controller in other games? I mean right after, in terms of closing GTA and starting the other game and checking controller function.
