Things the GTA V map can learn from Fortnite

Was anybody saying the GTA V map was too small when this game first came out? I think it was plenty big at the time. Significantly larger than any previous Rockstar title with plenty of diversity. I remember my first time climbing one of the mountains (not even Chilliad) and looking back toward the lights of civilization and thinking it felt absolutely vast, completely dwarfing San Andreas's map (which at the time also felt so enormous).

I strongly believe that a large part of why people say it feels small NOW is that we've all been playing it for years. There are no surprises, we've explored every nook and cranny. That's not a fault of the map size, it's just what happens when you play a game into the damn ground.

I'd like a map expansion, definitely. But I don't think this map was ever small. We just outgrew it.

A lot of people did complain that GTAV's map seemed a bit cramped in comparison to 2004's GTA San Andreas. Even though GTAV's map is said to be the biggest yet GTA San Andreas's map "appears" much bigger and more diverse. There was tons of country and desert etc to explore but GTAV's country and desert just seemed to so small in comparison. The GTAV map is the worst map yet i think.

Silly comparing GTA to Fortnite though. GTA can learn f*ck all from Fortine. Fortnite has to be the worst game ever created. I've literally had more fun playing with a stick than i have playing Fortnite.

Thank you, of course! Yet another vast world game - hoop and stick! Seriously, every single building in that game has an interior you can access, and don't even get me started on the wildlife!

Map expansion would be easy in my opinion. The easiest way is simply making all of the ships they've added over the years explorable in freeroam (Aircraft Carrier, SP/Heists Yacht, and the GR Yacht). A really elaborate way to expand the map, however, would be to push the map limits out more (the limits that disable your jet/ship and instakill you when you enter the water) and add a huge ass island that has a airport, a major town/city, and a military base. That'd be the absolute tits of map expansion imo there. Adding something like San Fierro would be too in-depth and it'd just be easier to wait for GTA 6 when they make an even larger map.

Obviously the other directions of map limits would stay the same, but the area where the island is, it'll be pushed out more. So if the island is north or above Paleto Bay, the south, east, and west map borders would be unchanged, but the north border would be extended more. Hopefully if they add an island expansion like this they add exclusive police units (for example, this island could entirely be under martial law due to the chaos in the state near it, and instead of always encountering police you'd instead get the military), new vehicles (a weaponized boat like a Patrol Boat would be extremely fitting to this DLC) and a new storyline (so this update could carry into SP and Online, both would get exclusive storylines, where SP now actually gets a f*cking DLC, while online would hopefully get an actual good mission pack for the island, with brand new contact missions, heists, etc. taking place on the island).

I think it's far from easy to create a whole new plot of land on the same map but it is obviously possible.

I think it would be worth it for R* though, having a second city/isand/land mass would mean more properties and opportunities for players to need to spend money to build their assets up on that plot of land. Kinda like starting a second character it's one more way to influence us to dump our money on toys we already own in LS. We'd probably have the option to import our owned vehicles at an insane cost too.

Don't get me wrong I love LS, it has it's faults but it's a great little map. Now that the updates only go to current gen console & PC though a map expansion could be much bigger and have more detail.

Since this comparison has been made, does this now mean that I have to play Fortnite for the first time?

Because I really wasn't planning on it.

GTASRO is vastly superior to fartnite in every way. You don't even have orbital cannons in that silly game. Maybe add flying cars and a purchasable underground lair for a start! Gosh!

What I find funny is hearing 'fortnite' being said by Americans.

I can't see GTAV getting a map expansion, its to late. I'm sure the next GTA instalment will be in its alpha stage next year.

Why people hate PUGB/Fortnite/the Battle Royale genre as a whole?

Just because it's popular?

Fortnite is just the minecrafted kiddie version of PUBG. I actually like PUBG alot and feel like GTA could learn from PUBG versus from Fornite. Did I mention Fortnite is for friggin children?

That's because San Andreas's cities were tiny. All three put together are smaller than Los Santos; San Fierro was like three streets. And the small country towns were about one intersection apiece.

I like V's map. I wouldn't mind more raw wilderness but overall I think there was plenty to explore when the game first came out. My only beef with it has nothing to do with size or variety - it's the asymmetry of having one big city and then a lot of "other" that bothers me. They've eventually forced us to spread out a little, but when players aren't attending to their bunkers and businesses, everyone still congregates in the city, which is like 1/3 of the map (and not even the center). That's a bummer.

I don't know Fortnite, seriously. But I doubt it can be any competition to the GTA series as a whole in the long run. Leave comparisons or enhancements where they belong

Look at all the other games that have tried to emulate GTA since the release of GTAIII (Elder Scrolls, Saints Row, Far Cry, etc.) and the whole open sandbox style of play.

Far Cry and TES "emulating" GTA, just no. TES Daggerfall was a 3D first-person RPG set in an open world and they were doing it a year before the first GTA game came out, and a full 5 years before the series would make the transition to 3D in 2001 with GTAIII. Morrowind was a direct evolution of Daggerfall and came out just 7 months after GTAIII, it was already well into development by the time GTAIII hit the scene and, like Daggerfall, featured a fully explorable enviroment that was several times larger than the map of Liberty City.

This is not to say that GTAIII wasen't an influential game in its own right.

The only thing Fortnite lacks is a desert, but I'm sure as hell this will be included with a map update sooner or later. Fortnite has more little towns, more farms, a countryside that actually feels like a countryside. GTA V - or the next GTA - can learn a lot from that game in terms of mapmaking.

Again, just no. It's got a lot of towns with absolutely nothing happening in them, the map is totally static. Fortnite (the Battle Royale version) has no AI mechanics, no vehicles, no complex physics simulation, no mission tracking, nothing, it's a very basic game. Maybe those things will be added at some point, but it's largely irrelevant. GTAV is a huge, synchronized, persistent gameworld filled with complex AI behaviour and a much more dynamic physics system, it has more detail scene-for-scene and Fortnite does not even come close in terms of technical execution. Fornite does not have a "destructable" enviroment, you can hit things until they dissapear, that isn't the same. Look at Red Faction if you want to see a "fully destructable enviroment" and the short version is that it takes a lot of processing power to sync that kind of dynamic destruction between players. GTAV was designed within the limitations present on consoles at the time and what they were able to achieve on that hardware is amazing.

Fortnite is a game for 12 years old?

Because GTA doesn't have an awful lot of 12 years old?

And I'm not even playing fortnite...

Like some ppl said, we juste need a GTA game with multiple big city. Like GTA SA but much bigger, that way, we could have some sort of cities wars.

Vice City was flat as f*ck. Boring to drive around. Loved the neon beachfront area and the slums though.

I wasn't so keen on the bridge that interconnected the two sides of the map. Queue the loading screen.... ah wait, I forgot something and have to turn back, queue another 2x loading screens.

We definitely don't need an LSIA loading screen to VCIA, for example, but an actual journey by air or sea.

Since people in this thread care so much about size, I would add that Daggerfall's map is the largest sandbox map ever created.

Nothing. Nothing managed to beat it since 1996.

However, size doesn't matter as much as the complexity and details. I would not sacrifice the GTA V complexity for a larger map.

The only thing that R* could learn from both Fortnite and Epic Games is to actually give a sh*t about game balance.

Please tell me you are joking... If you know Epic Games' past (moreso talking about Gears of War here - not Gears of War 4 because that's a different developer) but Epic Games broke and made an unbalanced environment in Gears 1, Gears 2 and Gears 3...

This is the same Epic Games studio (minus Cliffy B and Rod Fergusson of course) that are involved with Fortnite. Please, don't mention "game balance" ever again regarding this studio.

Wow... I really needed a lol today. Thanks for providing one.

Have Epic Games addressed any game balance issues with Fornite though?

Because if that's so, then they're better than R* in that aspect.

Rockstar does as well, just don't public address any of it.

They do address it (see any patch notes), they just do a really bad job about it.
