Things the GTA V map can learn from Fortnite

Hello,

the map subject has often been discussed. Many say the countryside lacks isolation, it lacks untouched nature, it doesn't feel like a real countryside. So while I was playing Fortnite: Battle Royale the last days, it hit me: Fortnite is a way better map, there actually is isolation. The hills around Tilted Towers, or the forest "Wailing Woods" (which is miles better than Paleto Forest) give me that feeling of Back O' Beyond from GTA San Andreas. It actually is pretty creepy at nighttimes, and V does not have that feeling for me. In Fortnite you can even destroy the environment, while in V you can't even run over a tree with a car.

The only thing Fortnite lacks is a desert, but I'm sure as hell this will be included with a map update sooner or later. Fortnite has more little towns, more farms, a countryside that actually feels like a countryside. GTA V - or the next GTA - can learn a lot from that game in terms of mapmaking.

Your thoughts on that?

Fortnite is a game driven by the map whereas GTA is a (10-year-old if you count dev) game driven by story set in a nice and very detailed map with an online mode.

Fortnite map was made for arcade BR battles. GTA V map was made to make an illusion of real world and live people hanging around (which now actually milked to death, i can't stand it anymore).
GTA mapmakers have nothing to learn from Fortnite ones. Completely different games with different map purpose.

But for the record, im down for any map expansions.

Lol...

We don't just set the bar, we are the bar!

GTA don't need to learn from free kids games, lol. Of course, times change, things grow. But GTA (and RDR for my money), are leagues ahead of that pap.

The only reason this GTA map is more and more getting smaller/boring/whatever, is that it's 5 years old. Fatigue is about all that's wrong, IMO.

RDR2 soon for me, I'm good.

^^ Free kids games you say? As if the playerbase of gta is adults, and please don't tell me about that whole it's a +17 game and all that stuff I am looking at a playerbase here

I play Fortnite, the silliness and cartoonish graphics and how hilarious the gameplay is is what makes it fun to play

Although I don't think GTA map and Fortnite map are similar and they are created for different purposes anyway.

We don't just set the bar, we are the bar!

^ The most truth is found right here in this statement.

Look at all the other games that have tried to emulate GTA since the release of GTAIII (Elder Scrolls, Saints Row, Far Cry, etc.) and the whole open sandbox style of play.

Even Halo, which preceded GTAIII by one year was limited in it map exploration, whereas GTAIII was fully realized.

In my opinion, Fortnite has a fun, unique map that offers a wide landscape to explore; however, it feels more like a cartoon in comparison to GTAO.

Games like Jet Set Radio Future and Sunset Overdrive also have wide landscapes to explore, and they're amazing, but again, they're cartoonish in comparison.

For my $, I'll stay with GTA. Nothing else comes close (except maybe the Elder Scrolls and RDR series). :)

The one thing I see Fortnite do very well is listen to what the players want and then give it to them....and it usually doesn't take months....they ask for it and they get it.

I gotta admit the map is small for such a big game. A map expansion is long overdue imo.

Good games are good games, I don't know it to care, lol. But don't let my uninformed judgements stop ya, we all have an inner child out there, lol. Enjoy your gaming man.

Though, Fortnite is/was free, and doesn't have the age restrictions GTA has (As you reminded me). Don't take a genius going forward. But that's all besides the point. fw3 above explains far better than me more the point I was making, that GTA is a leader in their field. Of course GTA is/was as popular with younger players. IMHO, too much so, but again, different discussion, lol.

Forgive my jest.

I agree, but thinking back, I don't recall any GTA game ever getting an actual map expansion.

Please - correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers! :)

As people said above this comparison makes zero sense.

Fortnite is a BR game where (if you play solo) you already feel that isolation, because unlike GTA (most of the time) people are always dead set out to kill anyone that moves. So that adds that layer of isolation on an OK map.

GTA is a game which as vehicles, NPCs, and so much more than Fortnite. Not to mention it's been out way longer. I used to have that isolated feel my first time driving out in the desert or in the forest, but now since I'm used to the map, that feeling is gone. With Fortnite you don't have the chance to really get to know a map that much like GTA is because the area of play is constantly getting smaller.

Not to mention I don't think a map extension would work, not because it wouldn't help, but because I think they'd f*ck it up some how, but either adding it and not optimizing the expansion, making everyone drop serious frames, or by doing everything right but charging some ludicrous amount of GTA$ to get a chance to enter or some sh*t.

Really this is just a waste of my time replying since it's such a stupid comparison

The Wandering Hunter

the gta map is too small, it needs more empty space in it imho.

the desert should have been way bigger especially

The GTA map is one of the few things in game that is done properly. It was stated multiple times that it is the very accurate representation of the LS.

We need more interiors, but that's all.

All those Fortnite kids need to play Quake 1-2-3 before talking about the map design.

......why the f*ck are we comparing GTA to Fortnite? Those are two completely different games in different genres. It's like comparing Destiny to LittleBigPlanet.

Correct. The only Rockstar game to ever get an actual map expansion was Midnight Club LA.

.....What does GTA have to learn from a retarded piece of sh*t game that 12 year olds play?

A map similar to Far Cry 5 would be nice, not Fortsh*t

Was anybody saying the GTA V map was too small when this game first came out? I think it was plenty big at the time. Significantly larger than any previous Rockstar title with plenty of diversity. I remember my first time climbing one of the mountains (not even Chilliad) and looking back toward the lights of civilization and thinking it felt absolutely vast, completely dwarfing San Andreas's map (which at the time also felt so enormous).

I strongly believe that a large part of why people say it feels small NOW is that we've all been playing it for years. There are no surprises, we've explored every nook and cranny. That's not a fault of the map size, it's just what happens when you play a game into the damn ground.

I'd like a map expansion, definitely. But I don't think this map was ever small. We just outgrew it.

Sentinel Driver

GTA Online's map is old and it feels incredibly small now that we've been using the same map for over four years now. It certainly has its flaws like the fact that there is no untouched wilderness you can always see something human made, and useless things like alamo sea taking way too much space. But please don't compare GTA's map to fortnite. They're two completely different games with different genres and everything. I've already had enough of fortnite invites being spammed to me while I'm trying to play gta

I have to to be the only person that doesn’t know what fortnite is. I mean I see the title name here and there but never actually checked to see what it is

I dont play fortnite. Ive played PUBG to death. Whhile the games are different, GTA is far superior than anything fortnite can put out.

We just need a new map to explore, preferably without fortnite attributes..but honestly, GTA is heading that direction. with all the hand motions you can do, not all different than the ludicrous dancing they do.

EH. I kinda agree with your point about the countryside, it would be nice to have a bit of untouched nature that wasn't a big-ass mountain.

But the map will not be updated in such a big way.

The only thing that R* could learn from both Fortnite and Epic Games is to actually give a sh*t about game balance.

As stated by several people already, the map design is irrelevant in this case because GTA and Fortnite are completely different games, as are GTA and PUBG.

In GTA online we feel a sense of calm. There's no immediate rush and if you feel threatened then simply go passive, allowing you to explore the map in depth and in your own time.

Fortnite, on the other hand, has a retracting inner circle that you need to get into after a time period of 2-3 minutes, forcing everyone to rush around and find resources before making the dash into the safezone. If you don't get into the safezone you die from the radiation/poison/whatever it is from the outside. It's a great concept because there's such a state of tension and survival all the time, but it's nothing like GTA online at all. It's very similar, in fact, to the mini game 'Penned In', and actually super-simplistic because you never create or build or invest in anything, just reset and start the rush all over again once you die.

Fortnite is still worth playing though, especially as it's free.

If anyone doesn't understand the essential difference between Fortnite and PUBG: Fortnite allows you to build temporary protective structures using wood, stone or metal, so you can constantly get extra protection. It's pretty weird, and that's why some people consider it a 'kid's game' because of the temporary build and bash nature of it.

I prefer marbles - the map is MUCH more immersive and bigger. When me and my mates are crouched around the little battle of glass balls that's taking place, we are literally surrounded by what looks like an infinite landscape. You can leave the game and use transport to get you to an airport and visit actual other countries! The developers have really gone all out and made languages for most places too!

Seriously - both GTA and Fortnight could learn a LOT from marbles.
