What does it take to compete with RDR ?

If some other publisher decided to make a western game , what does it take to compete with Red Dead Redemption ?

Good question.

 

I think first and foremost find something to specialize in from the western era that Rdr hasn't done. Like certain wars or events.

 

And of course rock solid gameplay and at least a compelming story.

the five things i think a game needs to compete with the RDR series

 

1. An almost limitless immersive experience that makes you feel like your in the west

 

2. Great overall characters that fit the western genre

 

3. A very emotional story

 

4. Attention to detail

 

5. large amount of customizations

The above answers cover it pretty well. But there is not a studio on earth that are suicidal enough to be putting together something to rival this when they know it is coming.

For me it's simply building upon the solid foundations of RDR, and including an online mode similar to GTAO in scale, albeit more refined.

I think the trick would be to not really try to compete at all but rather to provide a distinct alternative. It's hard to say what that might be without knowing exactly what Rockstar's plans are for RDR 2 but I think if someone were to make a full on RPG like Kingdom Come in the Old West that could be pretty cool.

 

I also think Rocksteady could make a pretty decent action adventure Old West game.
