Things you hate the most about Vice City

Recommended Posts

Jack Lupino

We have one for III and SA thought it would be nice to hear people's grievances about this game.

Alright heres mine(some of them maybe controversial)

1. Character customisation-

I hate to travel to places to get a costume.

They should be spawning at safehouses.

2. Too much water-And you can't swim

3. Graphics-I still like gta 3 graphics but just can't stand the poor textures of this game.

4. The car models-Literally worst imo. Some of the cars were made to look worse(banshee) and in general I dont like the design of most vehicles.

I will add more later.

The beach part of Vice Beach probably could have been a bit smaller. Looking at it now, it takes up about half of the entire Vice Beach island, and I feel like it could have been smaller and still felt as huge as it did. Plus, while I'm no expert on how that would relate to space and how much more city they could have given us if the Beach was a little smaller, maybe some areas of the city could have been made bigger. Or there could have been the inclusion of new areas such as the "Gator Keys," which were cut from the game and referenced in some of the removed mission dialogue for an Avery mission that would have taken place there. That would have obviously been based on the Florida Keys, and it would have probably allowed for a little bit of countryside and some small towns on the islands just to add some more diversity to the map.

-Distribution Mission:You literally have to be right beside a Pay & Spray in order to pass this...

-Auntie Poulet Mission's:They don't fit in with the story what so ever imo

-The amount of thing's cut from the game.

That you can't swim and there's a lot of beach area in game and the city is too small.

How ugly they re-designed the banshee. Thank god they returned III Style banshee in SA.

That in the mission The Driver you have to use SENTINEL. Why not Infernus or atleast Sentinel XS?

I think my biggest annoyance with Vice City, right from day 1 to current day, is the difficulty of the police, even on a simple 2 star wanted level. They would come flying out from every side road and kamikaze straight in to you, and whilst at times it could be fun when just in free-roam, there was many a time it went beyond pure frustration during missions. Vehicles seemed to have very poor health, so a chase would last around 5 minutes before they had rammed you enough to destroy your vehicle.

I don't have anything in particular, but yes, there are certain aspects that I dislike strongly, like:

1. The story. Is there any? You come to VC, get ambushed, and start running errands just to track down the men behind the ambush, even though it's blatantly obvious very early on in the game. Moreover, the fact that you own assets/properties by having so much easy money, through rewards and other sources of cash in game, yet Tommy tends to avoid every confrontation by agreeing to repay Sonny's debt. I'd have preferred Tommy not giving a damn about Sonny and made up his mind to set out on his way to become the kingpin of VC right from the beginning, just like CJ.

The ambush should have led to an exciting rivalry between the two, instead of this bizarre Claude style errand boy approach for no justifiable reason, which makes the end game finale absolute joke. I didn't get the feeling of a kingpin rather than let down by a lacklustre ending. There are several other inconsistencies and unanswered plot points that are lacking any logic or sense, at all.

The main story is narrated in a very short sequence of events, giving an obvious impression of an expansion pack with a simple mission structure, missing otherwise an in-depth understanding of the situations and the subject of Miami city's criminal background of drugs, etc. Such a waste.

Thankfully, Rockstar corrected several mistakes of VC's storyline and character progression in SA.

2. Lack of swimming feature. Its more useful in VC than any other game in the series, so the absence of this ability really puts the game down.

3. The aggresive cops and the smaller map size that isn't great to engage in any police chases on higher levels

The cops in VC are a really a cheap piece of cake compared to III; their accuracy is a joke and avoiding being rammed is easy as pie, also they don't even shoot at the roadblocks. You're not even in danger when the army gets out of their tank since they're not even using the M4 but MP5. III cops were way more deadly and you'd die in a fraction of second if in range of the army with the M16.

The thing I hate the most about VC is its lack of polish, this is where you see the game has been kinda rushed; typos, graphic bugs...

And this, plus a few other problems mentioned in this thread, is probably related to the fact that this came out only a year after GTA III, they basically worked really fast on it and I remember reading an interview with Lazlow where he mentioned that he was asked to come back and help with VC not long after III's release, and his reaction was something like "You're doing another one already?!" I think they still put out an amazing game in the amount of time that they did and given the tight deadlines that they likely faced, but a delay to Spring 2003 probably would have given them more time to polish the game up and fix a few things.

The mission No Escape? really highlights the unfairness of certain missions. You don't even get a moment to get in the car in safety, instead you've got to escort this useless character through the station and into the street - which by that time is swarming with cops. And as soon as you get in the car, you've getting kamikaze'd left and right by cop cars. It's just relentless, and what bugs me is that the cop outfit should make it easier, shouldn't it? Shouldn't that be the whole point of that particular costume change? But you get a ridiculous wanted level, and the game works it in such a way that you can hardly get into the car without dying.

Vice city suffers from the typical GTA problem which is that there's nothing to spend your money on. You acquire all these businesses, amass all that wealth, BT there's nothing to spend it on apart from weapons

-Some very interesting parts of the story are largely under-exploited like I mentioned in another thread ; Tommy never finds nor even looks for Teal's accomplices Moweesha and Eugene is strange and frustrating, the plan to kill Diaz should last longer, Sonny remains much too passive with Tommy and nothing in the scenario justifies it

-Despite being uni-dimensional Tommy's personality has some serious inconsistencies, the fact the so-called badass-alpha-male Tommy pays to get the scumhole shack is the most obvious evidence of it, even the so-called "pussy bitch" Carl Johnson doesn't have any as lame savepoint in San Andreas and doesn't spend/waste any cent to gain access to the Angel Pine caravan. The so-called kingpin Tommy Vercetti personaly taking a client in a taxi or selling drug-filled ice-cream with the risk of being caught don't match his image neither. The fact he never does anything to conquer little Haïti makes Tommy Vercetti look like a pussy bitch compared to CJ and his gangs wars

-Tommy falls way too oftenly when he drives a bike and their handling is too rigid

-The game lacks of auto races which is a shameful pity since the cars' handling is excellent

-Given the quantity of things you find on it and the little part it plays in the scenario the beach is too large given the city's size

-The taxi job is largely underpaid compared to GTA 3 and given the distances you need to run, what's more the city's design makes the choice of itineraries is very limited especially since there's oftenly only one large road giving you the chance to receive the speed bonus, another problem is you can't make your car go faster with nitro. All these elements make this job terribly disappointing compared to GTA 3 and even San Andreas. Since Vice City is a very charming place and the excellent cars' handling it's a shameful pity

-Since you only play it once, since you can't get any speed bonus or any bonus after serving a certain number of clients the pizza delivery job is very poorly handled

-The quantity of side-activities could have been slightly increased by adding a PIMP job and some RC bandit vehicle-destruction jobs

-The dildo dodo mission sucks especially since you can't fly again if you land on the ground, this mission would be much funnier if Tommy used a helicopter instead

-The bloodring would be more interesting if the player could choose the challenge's length

-The paramedic job should have been removed or at least Rockstar should have included a small village where the player can perform it while running little distances like in Angel Pine ; San Andreas

-The city streets globally lack of gangsters and there's too little action against them, which is frustrating especially compared to GTA 3 and San Andreas

Like I wrote, the game should offer much more than 6 races.

While I would love more races as well since like you wrote the car handling in this game is good, the map is pretty small as it is,and on top of that it consists of like 60% beachside. I mean the VC endurance race alone takes up the whole map, and the other five ones take up sizeable chunks as well. I don't see how they would fit in more races

Again, not trying to argue or anything, just making an observation

You never receive any reward when you make a new record with the helicopter checkpoints.

The toy helicopters are much too fragile and too sensitive to the direction changes.

The goddamn RC helicopter mission. Even though i have done that mission, STILL IT'S SO HARD AND ANNOYING.

It's simple: Dodge Viper didn't exist during 80's, so they turned it into a Chevrolet Corvette C4.

I like it, btw.

To everyone that's saying, "you can't swim", swimming in Vice City is totally unnecessary and irrelevant. I understand that it doesn't make sense how there is a beach but you can't swim on it but still...

On topic: The small map. It could have been bigger.

The streets are always too quiet when you go in an enemy gang's territory, you don't hear any scream, don't see any gangster getting out of his car to shoot you, don't see any police helicopter watching the scene etc. GTA 3 and San Andreas are largely funnier on this point.

Vice City is one of my least favourite instalments in the entire series. I've only ever beaten it fully twice. There's very little in the game that can entice me to pick it up and play again. One of my biggest bugbears is the map, which is so small and boring it's a wonder the plot is as long as it is. There's so much wasted space it's depressing, mostly down to the open beaches which look great in the right weather conditions, but they ultimately serve no purpose whatsoever. Downtown is tiny, every district is painfully small and they pale in comparison even to III when it comes to detail.

I also hate that you can't swim. I've been spoiled by the other games in the franchise, sure, but to be surrounded by water in such a way means the ocean loses so much potential. It's a mild heart attack even getting in and out of a boat. I'm not saying I want to have the option to swim from Starfish Island to Leaf Links, but I would have liked it if I didn't instantly die from falling off a dinghy.

The god awful rotating cameras when inside buildings or tight corners

You still couldn't run with two handed weapons and the baseball bat

Flying mechanics were balls,  should've introduced it in sa instead

Narrow streets,  made cop chases more annoying (introduced spike strips)

The fact they nerfed the payouts which you usually get paid under 10k, doesn't make sense that we don't have over a mil in the end.

Wish there was a mission that takes place in Lc,  just like 'no wife no kids' scene in scarface.

Except for the fact that the map is literally 5 islands surrounded by water so no, it's not unnecessary. You can't have stunt jumps over water that you can't swim in, an unforgiving running mechanic that means if you don't stop your sprint in time you end up dying (plus any other physics based issues that mean you end up in the water) or boat based missions that mean if you stuff up not only do you fail the mission but die. It was stupid of R* not to put a little more time into developing a swimming mechanic for Miami of all places and I'm glad the lack of such a feature is criticised so much. GTA 3 had the excuse of being the leap from 2D to 3D so it could focus on perfecting the on-land mechanics over literally everything else, but Vice City? No.

EDIT: I now disagree. Why do R* need to add a swimming mechanic if you have speedboats to help travel the sea which obviously faster than swimming?

I now disagree with this statement.
