Most of my favourites have already been mentioned but...….

For a couple of comedy westerns I really like are :-

Support Your Local Sheriff (1968)

Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971)

Another serious one is :-

A Man Called Sledge (1971)

Classics with the late great James Garner.

There are so many western movies I love, that I could just sit here and list them. Open Range, 3:10 to Yuma, and Unforgiven jump to mind right away, but my favorite western of all F'ing time, is the HBO series, Deadwood.  None better in my opinion. On that note, I just read that a movie to finish out the series was greenlit, and will begin shooting in 2019. It's been ten years, but I never lost faith, LMFAO!
Seriously though, if you haven't seen Deadwood, I can't recommend it enough. Here is literally the first scene, season one, episode one. You can't tell me you don't want to watch this show...

I lost interest after Hickock was shot but of course that was inevitable since he was only there for 48hrs.

After that, it became an X rated romance novel but I can understand the need for a sequel since there were a couple people that didn't get laid in the original series.

I watched The Magnificient Seven (the newer one with Denzel Washington) and it absolutely sucked.

My favorite is probably Unforgiven.

Hateful Eight and Django Unchained just seem to me more like Quentin Tarantino movies that happen to be set in the old west, rather than true western movies, if that makes any sense

A little bit off topic..  Does anybody recall a western with long blonde haired pale bad guy?  Wearing mostly black.  I cant remember the movie he is from at all..

I thought immediately of Bad Bob from The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean

Shoot, I didn't realize, that's Stacey Keach

Wow what a scene!  Dude shot the horse :O  I have been google image searching every variation of "blonde cowboy bad guy" and this guy never showed up either.

It was a more recent film.. long thin straight blonde hair.. Elfish features.. silent.. and I recall him wielding a bowie knife.  I dont believe he was the main antagonist, maybe a henchman.

It's driving me crazy trying to remember the movie.  Thanks for the reply!

I saw "The Great Silence" yesterday, buy Sergio Corbucci. I really liked it!

I'm going to try and see one or two westerns every week from now on up until the release of RDR2. Enough to get into the right mood but not so much so that I'll get tired of them, lol (I honestly don't think I can get tired of them, but you get my meaning).

Guys, the legendary Coen Brothers are releasing The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs .. pure RDR-looking gaming. Releasing on Netflix and selected cinemas. Starring two Irish legends Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson as well as musician Tom Waits, and James Franco! Amazing!

One of my favourite westerns is High Plains Drifter... it's got 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ok so yesterday I saw ”The Wild Bunch”, man, what a great movie! I did however rate The Great Silence a notch higher, mostly because of its more unconventional story.

Suffice to say, I realize why The Wild Bunch must have been viewed as extremely violent for its time.

It’s great to see these classics and try and look for all the things R* (and other newer films such as the Tarantino westerns) draw inspiration from.

Next up is ”The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” from 1948.

Not your typical western film, but I really like How the West Was Won.

We used to watch it every Christmas when I was a kid.

I gotta say, I love westerns so much it's hard to pick favorites, and I still have a lot of the classics I need to watch, but I absolutely love the dollars trilogy... For A Few Dollars More being my favorite of the bunch. Others for what I can think of for favorites, Unforgiven, Django Unchained, The Assassination Of Jesse James!! Hang Em High is good. I still need to watch The Wild Bunch, the rest of 3:10 To Yuma, Open Range, Bone Tomahawk, Once Upon A Time In The West, The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, The Searchers etc.  Haven't seen Tombstone in a while, and I watched The Hateful Eight this year, really liked it!! Not as much as Django but still, was great.

Peckinpah

Felt compelled to sign up to this forum after reading this thread in particular.

Goes without saying the Dollars trilogy along with Once Upon A Time In The West, and Duck You Sucker (Fistful of Dynamite/Once Upon A Time In The Revolution) are classics and will most likely be for the majority of people their introduction to the genre.

Good to see a lot of love for the Wild Bunch, still a powerful movie to this day. Sam Peckinpah did another great underappreciated Western named, Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid, absolutely adore this movie and all the different versions available, they each hold something special for me.

I have always loved the opening from the 2005 special edition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWoUBVUzDns

After Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda starred in the excellent Easy Rider, Peter Fonda helmed a Western named The Hired Hand which he cast Warren Oates to star alongside him and Verna Bloom. Really slow and beautiful Western, that appeals to your love of Western scenery and beautifully picked Guitars, Banjos, Mandolins to dress it all up and tug at the heartstrings. The fella that did the soundtrack is named Bruce Langhorne, and I implore ( 😉 ) everyone to listen to it. Warren Oates by the way, talk about weapons-grade scenery chewer. Forewarning though this movie isn't your typical Western.

Trailer for The Hired Hand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmd-kZgDIPw

Another unconventional Western but not as unconventional as The Hired Hand is, McCabe and Mrs Miller, directed by the masterful Robert Altman. Warren Beatty as McCabe and Julie Christie as Mrs Miller, another one that is beautifully shot and has a pretty great soundtrack by the late Leonard Cohen, the snowy backdrop is perfect and often underutilised I feel in the Western genre. A very young Robert Carradine pops up as well.

Love this scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVv9PWNKSYk

A classic this time, The Ox-Bow Incident, starring Henry Fonda. Directed by William A. Wellman, a tale of frontier justice, exacting revenge on the innocent until proven guilty. Clint Eastwood happens to love this movie, and a terrible fact about the star Fonda, he actually witnessed a lynching as a young boy, his performance in this movie is actually really emotive, it's obvious this film tugged at him on a personal level.

This scene is a bit of a spoiler, and I suppose in some ways my description is a little spoilery, but really it is fairly obvious what happens in this movie. It is how it plays out that is interesting. Just check this scene out, Fonda is amazing.

Sorry, I have gone on a fair bit, especially for my first post here. I absolutely love Westerns, if I'm not watching Western movies or TV shows, I'm watching Western documentaries, reading Western Books, or Playing Red Dead. I hope for anyone who hasn't seen those movies I have posted, find my descriptions interesting enough to check them out.

@SneakyDeaky Love the avatar dude, no band tops The Band!

I'm unsure how to change it from the link to the video player?

Good to have a Peckinpah fan here, and a fan of The Band! I'm a massive Dylan fan so I love Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Dylan's favourite Peckinpah movie was Ride the High Country/Guns in the Afternoon.

They say Dylan played Peckinpah a song the first time they met on an acoustic guitar that left Peckinpah in tears and so Dylan was immediately hired to write the score.  I've often wondered which song he played...

Sorry, IDK why your video links are showing up as links and not direct videos, when I want to post a youtube video i just copy the address and paste it and it seems to work.

I havent watched that many westerns but Once Upon a Time in the West is just an amazing movie, unforgettable.

I remember watching some random westerns as a kid and cant seem to forget some character named Billy the Kid, which supposedly was a legend amongst the outlaws for faking his own death and getting away with whatever he did. Never figured out what movie was that tho.

I remember hearing that Billy holds some kind of record for the most movie appearances by an historical figure.

100+ I believe, but never a real good bio.

My favorite is: wild wild west, with will smith and kevin kline. I hope Rockstar has added the same kind of stuff as dr arliss loveless has, like the big giant robot spider.
