Slight graphics issue.

Question

terrannce

For some reason, the graphics look blotchy on my game in 1680X1208 I think it is.

I tried deleting the set file, it didn't work/

anyone know what to do?

Look at Wuzi's shirt, in the following picture, for an example:

Is the graphics resolution set to X32, X16 does not have the full colour palette.

Personally, I see No problem with the image.

IF you have any mods installed, remove them.

What version of the game is yours?

ah, that's because it's hard to notice since the picture is smaller than my real resolution.

but basically, it is really blotchy and I never saw it like that before, and I ran SA on this same computer multiple different times after formatting and reinstalling windows several different times.

I use the same few mods, mainly CLEO mods, and some editing of the american, gxt language file.

I don't think changing a name of something in the american language file should have any effect on graphics, but I will try uninstalling cleo and see what happens.

EDIT: Whom, this is the cutscene which I took the photo from.

In this video it looks the same as well.

It may well not be a graphics issue after all, but if it's not, then I must've never noticed it before, for some reason, though I've been playing San Andreas for years.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot, I am using the best version V1.0!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: I still get the feeling that it's not supposed to be like this, still looks off.

Still looks OK, to me

There is no "Best" DVD version 1.0 game to my knowledge. Unless one that has the Official patch v1.01, which does not allow for modding of the game.

The DVD v1 game comes only on Dis

If you have a stolen (Warez, Torrent, Pirated) Game you should ask at the source site.

It is known that Modifications to the game may cause unexpected and seemingly unrelated problems.

You are changing the original Code. So conflicts may occur.

As your problem still occurs and you do not want to remove the modifications, try the Modding Forums.

1680X1208 x 32? for the full colour pallet.

I do see distinct Color Banding in normal game play on Fog and on Sky. I also see it on the pictures and video, where it is emphasized from using JPEG and h.264 compression, which internally use a YCbCr color transform, and quantization (reduction of color depth). Both screenshot examples have low bitrate / poor quality. There is green and purple on woozie's shirt.

I suspect it arises from the graphic assets having low number of colors and mixed at low precision in DirectX, followed by a gamma adjustment, which the game always does: if I Alt-Tab, the screen changes brightness. I do see severe banding in other games (Half-Life) in Direct3D, which is entirely gone in OpenGL.

16-bit (565) on a screenshot would reveal a color histogram like this, where there are gaps between color levels:

Normal banding on sky and fog (try saving in JPEG and gets worse):

If your Brightness / Gamma adjustmet is extreme, you would see more banding. Also if you increase the brightness of your monitor. The problem would appear less on screenshot which typically bypasses gamma adjustment.

Please make a screenshot and save it in PNG format.

here's one I just took. I circled in some prominent areas.

Here's an in-game photo I took of clouds

Your new pictures again have low quality, just 60 KB and 13 KB.

I see that the woozie texture appears with strong dithering and 4x4 blocking artifacts from DXT1 compression. I don't know much about modding so maybe I picked a wrong one. But they all seem to have this issue. Also the lighting has low color depth even if you choose 32-bit as the output. The effective quality is something like 18-21-bit.

Here you see that CJ's armpit is purple and turns into green, as the green level jumps from 22 to 25.

I'm convinced that the banding is in the game, and has always been there. Maybe your monitor is brighter than before, or you look a the images more closely than before in a dark room.

Vehicles, particularly dark ones, also show banding on the color gradient.

These all look normal to me. I certainly have the same clothes/clouds colours on my machinem or have had at one point or another.

It probably looks different to you because you never encountered them on this monitor/graphics cars/during that game time of day.

The graphics of the Game are Crude.

Higher Resolutions, Monitors, and better Graphics Cards Can only improve the image slightly.

I still think there's a problem but it's either with my monitor, graphics card, or drivers, because I see it else where as well now.

I think I figured it out.

I have been mostly playing on my laptop with a small screen in 1280x1024

now I am playing on my 24" LCD TV, in 1920x1080

so things are much more stretched out now.

On my laptop, I can notice it, but I have to specifically look for it, on my TV, it is noticeable without looking, but size and resolution can probably explain it.
