What's the point of rigging car bombs?

Recommended Posts

RetroMystic

This might sound like a dumb question but I well and truly don't understand the point of rigging vehicles with explosives aside from using it in one or so missions.

In what world would one want to pay for the luxury of a car bomb, then have to get into the car themselves and start the ignition triggering the bomb which kills me anyway. If a carjacker decides my vehicle looks nice chances are I'm close proximity enough to still be caught in the explosion and if the car in question was disposable anyway, why not just use a Rocket Launcher or something to blow the car up?

Maybe just in case those street thugs decide to jack your car.

Because assassinating Mike Forelli would be too easy without the rigged car.

I feel they were just heavily underused but initially planned to have a wider range of applications but just sort of dropped off the radar in every III-era game. In 1/L/2 car bombs let off ridiculously large explosions (5 or 6 times the strength of a single rocket from a launcher) and therefore were quite useful in the right freeroam situations and in lots of missions.

In III, Lips' Last Lunch and the follow up Farewell Chunky mission made great use of the Portland-exclusive vehicle start trigger which is useless otherwise. Kanbu Bust Out was the only mission which used a car bomb after that IIRC, and the destruction it creates is totally scripted, which is where the concept fails both with the Staunton timer and Shoreside remote trigger configurations. OP is right, they're useless because a rocket or even a grenade is far more flexible and accessible than any available car bomb. Now, if you could destroy all life within a 50m radius with one, that would be a different story...

I believe that San Andreas has fully-working coding for all three types of car bomb but a scripting bug locks it back to just vehicle start trigger bombs. Yet another unpolished feature to chalk up for that game.

They are pretty useless and chances of someone carjacking you is very rare.

Hence why it was removed for later gtas

Besides the missions Mike 'Lips' Last Lunch, I Scream You Scream, Blow Fish and Kanbu Bust-Out (where bombing is required) I really don't know. It's pretty useless but I guess if you think creatively you may find a good way to use bombs in some missions.

If you don't want anyone to get out alive with your car and don't have the rocket-launcher rigging your car is a good option although I never did it.

Apart from the Missions some minor fun, there's no real use of the car bombs. Car jacking in GTA III isn't as frequent as Vice City as GTA San Andreas. The game tends to despawn the vehicle when left at a place away from the player coords for a long time.

Back around the time the game was new, I enjoyed witnessing pedestrian thugs trying to jack a rigged car and seeing them blow up.

They didn't really remove it, they just replaced it with remote explosives that gave you a lot more control and utility. Satchels in SA, car bombs with phone detonation in IV, sticky bombs in TBOGT and V. Those are useful because you can plant and blow them at any time.

I am not sure if I remember this correctly, but if you rig a car in Staunton Island or Shoreside Vale the car will detonate on a 10 second timer.

If you could bail out of the car those 10sec bombs would have more sense. Btw you can activate the bomb and park fast and recreate some situation, idk.

Perhaps you can stop next to cartel cruiser or a mafia sentinel and blow the car and the c**ts inside XD
