Losing the ability to layer tiny selection of inner and outer tops didn't make much different considering we have a lot more variety in return.

layering clothing with it was impossible to do

So many game devs say this. Ea did when fifa sent to ps4. And I say bullsh*t. It's your game and your engine. Anything is possible especially things that an older, more inferior engine had. It's just they cba to code it. I'd much rather them say we decided not to take that design avenue and elect for preset outfits as they fit the tone we want for the game or would allow more resources to be distributed on other features. Stop bullsh*tting the gamers and just say you didn't want to put it in the game

What preset outfits? Everything is still up for mix and match including the color customisation. The only thing lost is layering feature.

Another example of Volition's laziness with the game. I guess they were in a rush to get it out by November 2011 and thought "f*ck it, people will buy it anyway." Or maybe they did have the time to do it and just thought "f*ck it, it's too much work."

By preset outfits, most likely he's referring to the fact that you can no longer layer whatever shirt or ties you wanted with what blazer or jacket, for example. A waistcoat would be stuck with a blazer instead of having the option to go without it.

Sr1 and 2 I built a few outfits and rarely changed them throughout the entire game. 3 I was changing them every 2 mins because I was never happy with them.

Same, and some of the suits in the game looked too big and bulky for your character. The one blazer that actually looked like it fit properly (and which also had a vent in the back that moved, which was a nice touch and a change from previous games where the clothing feels stuck to your character) was forever stuck to the waistcoat and unbuttoned shirt. You couldn't add any ties, take away the waistcoat, or just wear it with a t-shirt. It's part of the default male outfit, too.

I wonder if they changed it for technical reasons?

WWE2K games for example lets you layer mostly all clothing letting you do most any combinations. However a side effect of that combined with a very deep creation mode, is that a lot of items tend to clip though other items.

Maybe moving over to presets was meant to fix clipping issues and such?

Apparently the variety they prepared quite many if you look at it compared to your layering ability in 2... I played the game backwards and while I was really expecting the layer clothing, I wasn't impressed by it because it's just that and that clothing items again.

I always change clothes in 3 and 4 because I was happy with the combination I could bring up. While when I was playing 2, I was stuck with that shirt or jacket again with jeans or shorts again and again. Partly because the selection hardly match and some makes the body model to look even worse with extremely fat/baggy clothing.

Now that you guys mentioned it, I loved creating outfits in SR2. I had gang themed outfits not only for the saints, but also for others. I rather create one myself than win or buy a preset uncustomizable one. Also tried to recreate outfits of the GTA protagonists.

I'm sure co-op would come back. Honestly, as much of a disappointment that I thought SR3 was, I still had a great time playing it with a friend, and I wish I could have done that with SR2 considering that game was even better and had a lot more to do.and I wish I could have done that with SR2 considering that game was even better and had a lot more to do.

I don't see why you couldn't, albeit you have to use a lan program like tunngle or whatever to play SR2 Coop.

Because even though I've got a 360, I don't have Xbox Live anymore and I don't know of anyone who does (or still has a 360 and is willing to get on again with another subscription for a playthrough).

I think the 360 version of the game is the only one that wasn't affected by the GameSpy servers shutting down, which I think is why it doesn't work like it used to on PS3 and PC.

Honestly though talking about Saint's Row now, while 2 was the best game so far you really can't complain about 3 soundtrack. Even the opening main menu theme in 3 is catchy as all hell, I still listen to it just for the enjoyment of listening to it. lol

Use Evolve on PC for Saints Row 2 coop. Its a buggy port for PC, though.

2's 80s station though.

This. In my opinion, the all-80s format of The Mix was the best radio station in the entire series. Nothing like hearing "Don't You Forget About Me," "The Reflex," "Out of Touch" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (a song that greatly fit the game and should have been used in trailers/commercials I think) all back to back, and other awesome songs from that era. The Mix in 3 wasn't bad, but it felt like some of the songs were out of place, they should have just had a separate station for classic rock and left The Mix to play older pop hits.

This is why I didn't even bother going for SR2 on Steam when it was free. I've heard nothing but terrible things about the PC version and figured it'd just be a waste of space unless I used whatever mods or fixes there are for it, but I just wasn't interested and I'm fine with the 360 version. Kind of a shame that it got such a sh*tty PC port.

Dunno, if you and a buddy can find a old PS3 on the cheap, I think PSN is still free on that system. Don't know if you can co-op Saint's Row 2 that way or not?

The mix in sr2 was gta level radio quality. Probably inspired by vice city.

In 2 or 1 (I can't remember) there was a chat show which part of it had then talking about shoes at the airport, and proposing to introduce a special loafer or something. It was mundane but I quite enjoyed it.

It probably was inspired by VC, but I know the all-80s format was actually a thing for radio stations here in the US because the late 2000s/early 2010s had a big comeback of 80s stuff, and one of the best radio stations in my city at the time was a station almost exactly like "The Mix" in SR2. I think VC and the real-life radio stations both played a big role in influencing The Mix.

And yeah, WMD KBOOM was in SR1. Conservative talk radio, another highly popular radio format in America that they were emulating. You can actually hear stuff that almost sounds like this in real life on any number of conservative stations around the country. They discuss airport safety, FCC censorship, illegal immigration (and proposing to fit illegal immigrants with shock collars), violent video games, all stuff that still gets brought up to this day (even by our current administration)

It's a shame they never brought this back, because while it sounded more mundane and certainly more realistic than GTA's talk radio, it was still an interesting and enjoyable show to listen to, and in my opinion, great satire of conservative radio and conservatism in-general. I think the reason this was not brought back was because this was written by one of the hosts of the show, and he was also the producer of all of the in-game radio (and someone who worked in radio in real life).

I know I mentioned this before a few pages back, but I'll say it again: Volition didn't bring him back, and not only was there a noticeable difference in how radio in 1 sounded compared to future titles (1's radio sounded realistic in terms of the formats, and used a lot of real-life DJs), but they probably were aware that they could not (or just didn't want to) come up with a talk radio show as good as this. There was also going to be another talk station that got cut from SR1, and it was going to be hosted by two real life radio hosts. I wonder if it would have been as enjoyable as WMD. And I wonder why it was cut, since I enjoyed WMD and it would have been cool to hear another one that gives a different viewpoint or talks about different stuff (and from two people I hear on real radio all the time).

I can't believe it's been 10 years already. It would be nice to see Volition do something about this and acknowledge the 10th anniversary of what's probably one of their most beloved games. I know they had a 10th anniversary for the entire Saints Row series last year and focused on every title, but they should do stuff that focuses entirely on 2. Maybe reveal more stuff about its development, do a live playthrough, and a port to the PS4 would be nice if a remaster is unlikely.

Also, I remember once when I had the game paused for so long that the pause menu music glitched and kept playing when I exited. Couldn't hear enough of this back then.

Another thing I'd like to point out between Saints Row 2 and 3 is the art style. Despite the more simpilistic graphics, the characters in 1 and 2 at least looked like real human beings somewhat. I never was a fan of the art style in 3 and 4. I felt the characters looked overly bulky, glossy and just plain weird, and as a result recurring characters don't resemble their older selves as much as they should.

It's been a while since I played SR3-4, but I think it was the male characters that were just overly bulky like you said. The male characters are hilariously wide. The female characters are a bit more normal.

I think they tried to go for a somewhat more cartoonish style for characters, one of the presentations the designers made used the term "exaggereal" to describe what they were going for, but I agree, it just looked kind of weird, especially on characters from previous games who returned. Even without the dreadlocks, Shaundi looked like a completely different person (and may as well have been, they didn't bring back Eliza Dushku as her VA).

Also, they really made sure the characters weren't too unhealthy-looking. Besides the guys looking too bulky, you could no longer make a morbidly obese character like in 1 and 2. I think that might have been down to clipping issues though.

I remember in SR2 when I created an obese Asian hooker with a beard and a cockney voice. Even today, I'd say the customistation options in that game are unmatched.

Vehicle customization was even pretty cool in 2. I remember there being a ton of options for most vehicles, and even though the handling sucked on most of them, at least you could drive something that looked how you wanted it to look, and if you wanted to, you could get your gang to drive around in supercars and have something fast on nearly every corner!

The cockney voice was a funny addition, too. I always had the Hispanic male voice for my character, and I kind of wish he came back for 3 just for even more variety.

SR2 male protagonist model and the clothing selection was good. Female protagonist was absolutely terrible.

Since SR2 has my SR3 Boss' voice setting, I tried to make it to look as close to my SR3 boss and she looked like a rejected barbie doll with tummy, thigh gap, and O legs.

I honestly never would have noticed, but then I never played as a female character except maybe once. If they did indeed look that terrible in 2, then at least 3 tried to make changes (even though the male characters still looked too bulky). I think the one thing I actually liked about SR3's character creator was the detail you could put into someone's face compared to previous games. I actually managed to make the protagonist resemble myself a little more, which I thought was amazing at the time.

SR2 was still an improvement over SR1 though, where no matter what you did your guy was always squinty-eyed and his facial expression hardly seemed to change.
