As all of the videos so far stated, it's pre-alpha gameplay. Maybe those animations are just used as placeholders until they could make better, more refined animations in time for the game's release.

A sign that the game is gonna be a buggy mess unfortunately considering theyre planning on releasing this next year

They actually did alright with the city. It looks far more varied, inspired and lively than Steelport. I like it.

Shame about the other things however. I hope for their sake, they actually bother to refine that clunky driving before release.

Now that I think about the, the driving kinda looks like those car mounts in MMO RPGs.

So yeah, pretty wonky.

GameInformer recently put up some hands-on impressions, and I'm liking the Arkham City comparisons for the wingsuit stuff - combine that with how the new car handling looks/sounds like Sleeping Dogs, and it's all very tempting (seeing as Sleeping Dogs and Arkham City both rank right up there for me). And what really has me interested is that you can climb out of your car on to the roof, use a ramp (or enough speed) to launch into the air and deploy your wingsuit, then glide back down on to another car to steal it (!!) - so theoretically you can keep that loop going indefinitely. Love it when games let mechanics intersect in an ecosystemic way, rather than the devs doing the frustrating thing of having systems be oddly self-contained.

Also, some eagle-eyed folks have noticed that it looks like pedestrian NPCs are made in the character creator, same as SR2. Assuming that's true, fantastic, because not only does it keep the asset style consistent with your custom character (rather than having a super-detailed PC, and then a bunch of plastic mannequins everywhere else), but also means the character artists can put in more time on player clothing items and the like, because character customisation work and NPC modelling are both one and the same, rather than having to do dozens of pedestrians and hundreds of customisation pieces on top (i.e., more stuff in the creator).

It looks like... Saints Row. I don't mean that in a particularly positive way either. From the footage so far it doesn't look like they've tried to evolve the series much and have just tried to make a "greatest hit" of SR2 and SR3. Visually it doesn't look impressive either, not bad by any means, but nothing that makes me go wow. I have no doubt it'll be a fun romp but it doesn't look like they've pushed the boat out from footage so far.

The map looks by far the best thing about the game so far, a huge step up from Steelport and we'll have to see if it can top Stillwater but it looks miles more interesting and varied than that grey piece of sh*te in SR3 and 4.

But yea it looks like more Saints Row and I'm at the point with games where I'm growing tired of the formulaic approach developers are taking with game design, especially open world game design. I'm cautiously looking forward to playing it... cautiously being the key word, but I was lowkey hoping for more from the next SR game and I'm not seeing it yet.

It doesn't help that these videos they're showing might as well be on mute, no radio, no soundtrack, no ambiance, nothing. It makes the world look and feel completely devoid of life which is the last thing you want from an open world crime game.

Can't say I like the health bars too much, but it actually looks decent so far.

They're definitely going for that quirky Baby Driver feel here.

It was terrible in that game though.

The health bars are part of a larger problem that I hope is simply cause it's in development, the UI looks rubbish. Practical, sure, but devoid of any style or soul, it's the blandest looking UI I've ever seen. I'd much rather a super minimalist UI than the one they're rocking right now, but I'm hoping it's just cause it's in development.

It looks like some of the guns and cars from the gameplay video are the same as ones from previous saints row games, alomst like they've just ported the models over from SR3 rematsered. That doesn't look too good when they're going for a reboot.

Assuming they're not literally ripping the models (I doubt it), there's nothing wrong with this for me. Car models, brand names, etc, are all part of the SR universe. The reboot is more for story reasons, there's no reason to start from scratch with the actual world its self.

GTA does the same thing lol.

I don't mind them keeping brand names and having the same vehicles as long as they don't look the exact same. They've started from scratch with just about everything else so I don't see why they can't at least alter the looks of the vehicles a bit. GTA has also never done a reboot like this before.

The wingsuit feature has me more excited

also I hope there are lots of random enterable buildings on the map, there where quite a few in saint row 2 and they were cool to find, like the caverns, hotels, underground casinos, mall, striptease place etc, i lot of them were places that missions take place but you could revisit them and still go inside or go in before the mission takes place

I hope all there are a lot of enterable buildings and generally just useless side things you can take part in, like you could be buy drugs and alcohol in SR 1 and 2

Eh, I'd call it "clunky", but not "terrible" - and the sideswipe ability (which is what the GameInformer comparison was getting at) was great. Same with being able to jump out of cars on to other cars, in proper action movie style - which is why I really like the look of being able to get out and shoot from the roof of cars in this new SR.

The mini-map is the big concern for me - right now, you can barely see the roads on it! :wtf:  And yeah, I think it needs more distinctive shapes and font styles - it's all a bit The Crew 2 at the moment...

To be fair, that's no worse than R* using stuff like the yacht from Max Payne 3 in GTA V, or the smoking jacket from GTAO in RDR2 (and that's assuming they didn't actually design it with RDR2 in mind, and then recycle it for GTAO!). As for keeping the designs the same despite being a reboot, that's fine with me, too - I quite like seeing series staples like the Raycaster looking familiar, rather than doing the GTA thing of slapping names like Jester and Jugular on totally new cars.

Same. Not only was it great to be able to explore little nooks and crannies for the heck of it in SR2, but being able to go inside a museum and wander around, or go into bars and eateries for health items, or having a proper shopping mall to buy outfits and the like, was so much better than just having the odd simple shop interior and not much else in SR3.

I'm quite encouraged by how the shop interiors look much more detailed in this new game (and how the shop UI is closer to that in SR1/2, where you see your character still in the world, rather than a generic void like in 3/4), but it'd be ideal if you could treat Santo Ileso more like a real place, rather than just a largely exterior playground where buildings are mostly just scenery to drive past. I think the different criminal venture buildings are supposed to have interiors, so we should be able to poke around in those. at least.

I'm not feeling it tbh. Feels little more than a refined version of SRTT with a different map, but with the same clunky ass driving physics and gunplay.

Having health bars for vehicles is stupid as well.

This thread got me playing saint row 2 again on Playstation "Now" and i am loving it,.....(its ben literally YEARS since I last played this...)

there are also a two new animations i just found.......there are two samurai sword final blow animations i knew about....(the third landing strike with a samurai sword attack) there was the R2 triple tap one where your character cut through the enemy's chin and mouth.... (pictures to follow later) and the L2 triple tap one where your character stabbed through the enemy's chest,

BUT if you spam both L2 and R2 and land a triple hit with the samurai sword (triple hit because some enemies die with one or two attacks....pimps or mission enemies are best for this) THEN your character will do a sweet chin music kick to the enemy's chest OR do an alternate stab through the chest.....

I don't know if this is common knowledge but its something I just found while revisiting SR2....

well the general point is i LOVE this game just for all the small and big neat features it has....

now I have to realistically temper my hype because it could never be SR2, THIS is SR2! and I am playing it now and enjoying it, I just hope to enjoy the new one too whatever it may be....and also they should take notes lol

I hate, always HATED, no, VERY MUCH DISLIKED the driving across ALL saints row games..(maybe thats why I liked the matrix powers one because I just ran everywhere) I really hope they improve it this time around, I like the car attack mechanic (batman style)  but not the health bar thing (hopefully that can be toggled in settings) its looks a little better but not much tbh...

I do like that there is a dirtbike/sanchez/sandstorm in the game, but the camera angle looked too far away for me, hope they have options to change the camera angle which I have never seen in any saints row and I have played and completed all except gat in hell...so thats is wishful thinking...not a deal breaker just a hope...

i am not optimistic about the driving handling but I do like the look of the offroad vehicle they showed and the roof shooting mechanic, now that is fire to me..
