I believe the leaked video was just something they gave to the press so the press could write articles about the game. Since it's harder to invite "journalists" out to see previews these days a lot of companies have just been putting together stuff like this instead. A lot of what's said in the video was written word for word in various articles before the video leaked.

It's just something I've noticed on Reddit and Twitter, you know connecting the dots after a question about what "woke" is. Where they already made up their minds and are just asking the question to see who is a "bigot".

How unfortunate. The world is conspired against you.

Yup, they found the source code too which would definitely aid in the development of the next game. saints row 5 confirmed GOTY

SR5 doesn't look goty to me. It looks fun but everything just looks generic. I knew it wouldn't be as good as 2 but this is lacking the grit I was hoping to see. It could be there but I'm not seeing it so far.

A lot can change in 2 years. Back then, we were still speculating a 8tflops PS5.

I wonder what the Hitman activity would be like in the Saints Row reboot? I'd imagine it'll probably be treated the same way as in Saints Row 2 and its equivalents in Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV. But I would love it if it took the "scripted activity with numerous levels" approach of the various series' activities and had different scripted missions for each target, which was the original concept for the Hitman activity in SR1 before it was changed...arguably for the worst before it improved in SR2.

Go to 8:46 to hear about the cut "Hitman" activity from SR1.

How many copies do you think they sell? I think maybe 80k :kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw::kekw:

2-3 million. All of this controversy is free advertising for them and pulls in the attention of new fans. I think it'll succeed with the new fambase they're bringing in, bit I'm not buying it.

Aside from the already-mentioned 'newbies in over their heads' angle (similar to Watch Dogs 2 and Baby Driver, where it's all fun and games, until someone gets killed...) something that occurred to me about going with a reboot is that Volition doesn't have to contrive a reason for why the established classic Saints suddenly get kicked back down to square one and have to take over the city (or a new city) all over again. It's particularly glaring in SR3, where not only does it feel really contrived, but they're still badass enough that the game barely gets beyond the prologue before you're stealing military hardware and calling in airstrikes. I quite like that this time, it's just a straightforward 'start from the bottom, work your way up to the top' structure, where the new Saints can make rookie mistakes to further the plot, or have to up their game as the stakes get higher.

...also, having them as inexperienced mitigates one of my personal pet peeves: tutorials that are necessary for new players, but don't make sense for the character ("yes, this guy is a seasoned assassin with decades of experience, but ignore that while we teach him - and by extension you - which end of a rifle points at what, and how bullets work..." :p).

I hope it does well just for Volition's sake - Agents of Mayhem wasn't terrible, but it definitely had development issues (not Cyberpunk-bad, but the game was certainly buggy as heck at launch), as well as Volition making the mistake of leaning too much into established Saints Row branding and iconography for a new IP that wasn't a Saints Row game. Even without the buggy launch (and other signs of rushing to ship something, like the amount of cut-and-paste design), they'd have done much better marketing it as a 'hero shooter/open-world Crackdown-like hybrid' like it actually was, rather than trying to drum up hype using Saints Row characters and branding, for a very different kind of open-world game, less about things like customisation and total player freedom like SR. As it was, 'it's like Saints Row, but with none of the stuff you enjoy doing in a Saints Row game!' didn't grab people (hardly a surprise) - but that nevertheless hurt Volition.

Fortunately, two things reassure me that things could work out better this time. Firstly, they're making a point about how stuff like taking over the city is back, specific activities like Insurance Fraud, the general 'take over the city region by region' larger gameplay loop, and the level of character customisation players expect from a Saints Row game. That avoids the AoM perception problem of 'like Saints Row but ...less - of everything'. The other thing is the return of veteran Volition producer Jim Boone, who left to pursue new things after SR4/GooH, and so wasn't involved with AoM, but then came back to Volition in response to AoM's less-than-stellar launch/reception. Perhaps there was more to it, but I do think there's something to it when Volition's only fumble since SR1 is the one game where the guy generally regarded as a steady hand on the wheel wasn't wrangling the project. Likewise, Volition co-founder Mike Kulas came back from semi-retirement (since SR3 in 2011) in 2019 - and the noises they were both making at the time sound promising, in terms of acknowledging why AoM didn't work out (rather than trying to deflect with positive spin).

If there's one sad irony to AoM being relegated to a largely-ignored misstep, it's that at least no-one's really thinking about it when it comes to the new SR game! :sigh: Watching general reactions on streams (talking bog-standard gamers, here - not the militant parts of SR fandom), and the general reactions tend towards "will it have ______ features like the older games", or maybe "this seems a bit toned-down - isn't Saints Row about over-the-top, do-anything fun?" - but no-one I've seen has said "hmm, hope it's better than Agents of Mayhem", because ...no-one talks about AoM. :turn: Probably one more (good!) reason why SR3 Remastered happened - just to make sure, better to have people remembering 'peak Saints Row' (with a well-received makeover to boot), instead of having people wonder "is this game going to be a buggy damp squib like AoM?".

(good grief, Volition really can't afford to have a troubled launch this time, though - if they need to delay for any reason, or maybe get out of what's shaping up to be a crowded Q1 next year, they'd be best off taking zero chances on that front, IMO)

Also because no multiplayer, not even co-op ffs. What were they thinking?! That alone would have went a long way.

Doesn't look like it - can't see any level numbers, so it's unlikely to be the more recent AssCreed approach of 'level 2 enemies die from a stubbed toe, level 10 can take two point blank headshots and just get narky'. Seems instead more like Watch Dogs Legion: no enemy levels, just a health bar and an icon indicating what kind of enemy they are (sniper, grenadier, etc.). For example, I'm guessing that the blast icon is for grenadier-types, fist is for melee cannon fodder, and so on.

Quite like how that stuff is (apparently) contextual, too - i.e., you see a health bar and a type indicator if you're aiming at that enemy, but it fades when you stop targeting them. Past Saints Rows were good at having things like your currently-equipped weapon icon fade out when you weren't using them, so it's nice to see Volition hasn't gone all-in with Ubisoft-style permanent UI clutter.

I say Volition just cancel this game and just make an PG version of Assassin's Creed called Buttbuttin's Creed.

I'm assuming it's simply because it's still in development but god damn is that a bad video to show the open world cause the lack of ambient noise is a real killer. There's a guy playing a guitar with no noise so yea I assume it's cause it's a WIP but woof.

It doesn't wow me visually though, it looks fine and all just not particularly impressive. Driving looks a little bit better than old SR's but cars still look like they weigh 50 tons. The city and map look miles more interesting than Steelport which... I mean that wasn't hard to achieve but it's something.

The least they could do is include a big mall where you can crash through things and visit restaurants and clothing stores and stuff. The way grenades are used and implemented implies that they've once again removed the food mechanic, which, in all honesty, isn't doing a great job at convincing me to buy the game.

I don't know why devs are so adamant about including, or at least superficially including slice-of-life elements into their games now. They provide a nice moment of calmness and realism to an otherwise action-packed game and can even act as unintentional period pieces for the culture and general lifestyle at that point of its release, like the mid-2000s were for the first two Saints Row games and the early 2010s in Sleeping Dogs.

This looks terrible. Barely different from Saints Row 3. In fact, aside from the graphics, this feels like a PS3/Xbox 360 title.

Upside is the city definitely looks livelier than 3 I suppose. I just don't like how they reused a lot of the same animations as 3.

As all of the videos so far stated, it's pre-alpha gameplay. Maybe those animations are just used as placeholders until they could make better, more refined animations in time for the game's release.
