IV on the other hand gave us some old faces back (like King and Gat)

Overall, I liked it far better than I thought I would. It held me over as a fun "guilty pleasure" game until GTA V came out and was a more satisfying experience than The Third, even if it did feel like more of an expansion pack than an entirely new game (you could probably say the same for SR2 to SR1, though that's a whole different argument). That said however, I didn't quite care for it enough to check out Gat Out of Hell. The sad thing is though that Volition could have used the resources to make a really badass and enjoyable (but standalone) superhero/alien game, but for whatever reason decided to attach the SR label to it.

How was King in SR4? I remember back when his original voice actor, Michael Clarke Duncan, passed away, and I honestly didn't think they'd bring Ben King back.

I can't comment too effectively since I never played SR1 (due to it being a 360-only release), but I did like King's presence in the game. There's a mission in the game that takes place in a simulation of Stillwater (the church to be exact), where you help King to fight against a recreated Tanya. Basically in the story, Zinyak has put individual characters in simulations of their worst memories, each of which you have to save in individual missions.

Also a shame about Duncan, though Terry Crews does a more than fine job.

Volition had a survival horror game in development back in 2010, it was gonna be called "inSANE," and if the IP rights hadn't been transferred over to Guillermo Del Toro after the game was canceled, they probably would have tried working that into a Saints Row game somehow as well.

It wouldn't surprise me. They canonically added zombies into SRTT after all, didn't they?

Alright, cool! I didn't know Terry Crews voiced King in SRIV. Sounds like they could only get a sound-alike for Mila Kunis though. I know Neil Patrick Harris returned as Veteran Child, wasn't there also a mission in SRIV set in the nightclub in Stilwater where you had to save Shaundi from him? I guess SRIV at least somewhat tried to appeal to SR1 and 2 fans with these "flashback" missions.

The zombies in SR3 really threw me off, too. I know I've said it before, but that had to have been around the time that they ran out of ideas on how to make the story a little longer, and their first instinct was "Let's do zombies, that'll work and it's zany!" back when zombies in the media was a craze.

Zinyak was definitely way better than Killbane, Cyrus, KIA and the "guy you only see for two missions before he dies"

He's my favorite antagonist in the series, with Vogel being second. Dex had potential to be the top but they ditched him. The way he appeared in GOOH felt meaningless, even moreso if you use Kinzie for whatever reason.

I was upset they blew up earth without ever giving Dex and Killbane closure. And not explaining where Viola nad Angel were when earth went BOOM!

I'd have loved for Viola to be around instead of Kinzie, I hate Kinzie. I sincerely hope she's not in the reboot if they're going back to their roots. I liked Matt, Viola, Oleg, and Angel. But Kinzie and Zimos.... *yawn*

Hopefully Donnie joins the Saints this time. Instead of just DLC that isn't even canon.

And a fun way to bring CID back.... turn him into Kurt from Night Rider. lol

I believe it was implied that angel died when he tried to take on killbane by himself. hopefully he stays gone in the reboot. the bitch talked about how the MC was weak and yet it was his ass we needed to save constantly.

If by "the guy you only see in two missions before he dies" you mean Philippe Loren, then yeah, I didn't understand what that was all about. The marketing really made him out to be some big European mob boss and the main antagonist, and then he dies not too far into the game in such a cheap manner. Vogel was an awesome antagonist (as was the Ultor Corporation in general given how many strings they pulled to set a lot of SR2's events into motion), but I still don't get what they were thinking with Dex. He was obviously being set up to be the next main antagonist for SR3, but then that was completely abandoned in favor of a luchadore. He was also meant to appear in an unreleased game called "Saints Row: Money Shot," and this was actually meant to be his official death.

This game ended up not being released, but even if it had been, Dex would have looked like an afterthought instead of just being completely forgotten about. This feels like a really lazy and anti-climatic way of killing him. Also, as a side-note, Anna (the talk show host seen in the prologue cutscenes in SR2) was also meant to be killed in this game (the plot was you were supposed to assassinate people for Ultor, and this would have unlocked the items from what ended up becoming the "Money Shot DLC").

I wouldn't mind Angel not returning. I didn't really like him much as a character, and Hulk Hogan didn't really do a good job of voicing him. Maybe I'm just used to the way Hulk Hogan usually sounds, but I remember him sounding kind of monotone and bored as Angel in SR3.

Angel was such a piss-poor character. Even Hogan sounded like he was just phoning it in.

Loren was just a first layer character that brings you to another set of event and antagonist, and that means also the actual threat (Killbane), followed by another big threat (STAG Cyrus).

The death of Loren shakes up things between the acting Morningstar leaders: the DeWynters, Matt, and Killbane who evidently became the most dominant between other leaders. The Saints also discovered Oleg and his story being an experimental subject by the Morningstar.

It's normal for a story to have this kind of rarely seen character who pose a big threat to die early that opens up a floodgate of trouble afterwards. Although surely Loren could use a better death scene than just accidentally crushed by an enormous ball...

That was a pretty stupid moment. With both that and Gat's "death," they really didn't handle writing these characters out very well.

, he just walks out and perfectly stands still for a couple seconds doing nothing at the exact spot the ball lands on him. Although given how the strategy guide mentions that the story was changed a few times during development, it wouldn't surprise me if some of this was the result of hastily-rewritten scenes because they just didn't have enough time to do anything else if they wanted to meet the release deadlines. SR3 overall kind of struck me as feeling like it was rushed at some points, despite the fact that it took a year longer to develop than SR2 (probably due to the redone graphics and physics for the game).

Raj The Rager

If they're smart, they should reboot the Saint's Row franchise, bring back the gang vibe with some unique changes to sperate themselves from GTA and make a dynamic diverse open world. Saint's Row 4 not only made absolutely no sense, but the entire game felt like it could've been DLC. Saint's Row: Gat out of hell was a DLC but it was also a very boring, repetitive and fantastical disaster. If they make something stupid like that again, they won't bring in a lot of new customers, the game won't sell well and history will repeat itself. I certainly hope this time they learned their lesson and stopped giving SR1, 2 and maybe 3 fans the middle finger.

A return to the gang vibe of SR1 and 2 is something I remember many fans asking for since SR3's release. Even during the previews for SR3 when they were putting the floppy dildo bat and other crazy things ahead of other elements of the game, a lot of people were questioning the direction SR was headed in. SR2 had its crazy and goofy moments, but it felt like it was more of the player's choice if they wanted to be crazy. Nobody forced the player to wear a hotdog suit in the story or do the side missions where you spray raw sewage onto buildings, but these things were there to do. It was a juxtaposition compared to some of the more serious moments in the game like Carlos being shot out of mercy, but it allowed you to play the game your way and make it crazier or more humorous if that's the way you wanted to go since the options were there.

By the way, looking over some random beta stuff from SR3, I found this presentation from Volition's Greg Donovan about the design of the game, including some indication the developers initially believed that SR2 lacked a cohesive feel and that making everything more over-the-top was the way to go with 3. Looks like the map of Steelport seen on page 31 was initially meant to be much bigger than what we got. At least it looks bigger than the one in the final game.

cI2fB0R.jpg

Stilwater in Saints Row 1 was also meant to be bigger before they decided to downsize it in order to ensure that there would be one big map with no loading screens (I know this is a small image, but I guess the airport and some of the industrial areas were what was downsized the most, but according to other artist images a racetrack, junkuyard, trailer park and a shopping mall were also cut), but I wonder if the design for Steelport would have been as sh*tty even with the bigger map. If they don't bring Stilwater back for a future title, they need to make a map as good as that one, and with modern consoles and technology being better than it was in 2011, I think they can afford to make it bigger and more varied than Steelport, too. I really don't want to see that city again in an SR game.

I saw they showed mathematics formula in their Youtube presentation for SRTT for the driving mechanic. It looks so cool they were showing that until I was reminded how the driving in the game felt like driving bumper car on ice.

As for the city, I think Steelport was intended to have variety and actually there are some spots like the red light district under the bridge, time square-esque area, industrial with nuclear plant, suburban, etc. I can't tell what makes them look the same though, I think it has something to do with either:

1. The unique spots only appear in small portions, the rest are reused building for fillers

Or, 2. Too much reusing building and their texture

Or, 3. The ambient lighting are the same

Try to compare Steelport to GTA 3 Liberty City for example. You can see the difference between Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale.

I think it was a mix of all three of those. There were a couple of small unique areas, but it was nothing like Stilwater's, where hardly any neighborhood felt the same. A ton of buildings and textures in Steelport were reused and outside of the downtown part of the map, most areas looked exactly the same (and for what little we saw of Stilwater in 3, even then they just used a bunch of random Steelport skyscrapers and they managed to make Stilwater look like Steelport). And with the color scheme, I guess they really wanted to drive home the fact that the game was set in autumn.

I'm not entirely convinced until new images of a new Saints Row game is featured, along with teaser trailers. If any, I'd just love to see a newly-redesigned Stilwater, though that's just my speculation.

It was.

I'd love a saints row reboot or at least a continuation of sr2. 3 was boring. Bit iv ticked the most Important box in games; it was fun. Immersive? No. Smart? No. But it was stupid toilet humour, childlike, no brainpower popcorn-flick fun

Sr1 was good. 2 was san andreas level in my eyes; as lose a gta beater as true crime la/NYC. Since then there has been no competition for gta and that's why gta seems to have stagnated in my eyes (v was half asses in a story and character sense - actually thinking about it, and in my personal opinion, gta v's characters were on a level with sr3.

I'd welcome a new "proper" saints row with open arms. One that denounces 3 and 4 (the saints being global megastars is preposterous).

I'd also bite the hands of the devs if they released 1 and 2 as HD remasters.

assuming it'll be on ps4

Just checked SR3 again. It's quite crazy comparing the final product map with the one you showed there.

The left island seems to be cut around 1/3 of the original portion. The nuclear plant was attached into one island, sitting on a hill in the final version. The island at the southwest got its tip chopped off to be separate island that later one becomes the zombie island.

Then the island on the right got added a tiny percentage for the airport at the north, while it seems it was meant to be separated into that small island at the northeast. Then that big chunk of island at the southeast was completely cut in the final version and replaced with a tiny island, which if I'm not wrong, it's the army base. The monument statue also was moved to the southeast instead of at the south.

Crazy if you think about it. That map isn't just a silhouette. They have arranged it and for whatever reason, they removed a lot of portion from it.

V actually had a lot of similar issues that SR3 had, which I found strange. Police that can detect that you're doing something even if none are around, overpowered police cars that can push trucks and APCs around, an Adult Swim inspired radio staton (WDDT in SR3 and FlyLo in GTA). If they wanted to do a direct continuation of SR2, just feature the protagonist waking up from a bad dream and going "Holy sh*t, I'm never smoking anything Shaundi gives me again."

I know, it looks like far more was cut from Steelport than what was cut from Stilwater in SR1's beta. The original Steelport actually looks like it's about as big as Stilwater, or maybe just a little smaller, but they really made it WAY smaller than Stilwater by the time the game came out. I wonder what their reasons for such a downgrade were. Could have been technical issues, but given Volition's history of laziness, it would not surprise me if they also just decided that a map that big was too much work. They clearly didn't put as much thought into Steelport as when they were making (and then remaking) Stilwater, which actually felt more like a real city, too, but based on multiple ones, and not just the worst parts of Pittsburgh with 200 story skyscrapers and a Times Square-ish area. I think I remember them promoting Steelport as being based on Chicago and Detroit, when it's clearly neither (as someone from Chicago, I can say that the only thing they lifted from here was the green streetlights, but that doesn't make the whole city based on here). It's like they were embarrassed to admit that they designed a city after Pittsburgh.

I felt like they tried too hard with the gangster roots like it was written by a bunch of nerds doing research on something they'll never experience IRL. I prefer the wacky tone which made the game distinguishable and not another GTA clone. I'm not going to trip if they revert back to the SR1 SR2 ways.

I loved SR1 and SR2. After that it kind of got...a little weird? I'd rather have the gangster again where the guys a f*cking mute than to have some weird ass storyline that doesn't make sense. I'm kind of hoping they go back to basics almost. I really f*cking miss that side mission where you get to pretend you're filming the 'cops' reality TV show. That sh*t was hilarious. Or even that dumb one of sucking dick behind a gas station or wherever it was.

Yeah. SR2 side missions were whack and more creative.

In SR3 there are side missions have a little bit related to storyline and it comes with dialogs. That was actually quite cool to have. The bad thing about it is that Volition decided to ACTUALLY use them to be a part of the story progress...

Other than that, the variety in 3 was rather bland like Insurance Fraud, Trailblazer, whatever the f*ck the one with Tiger, and Escort Service where if you play co-op, the other player will have to input buttons just like that sucking dick in the toilet in SR2.

I love the Survival in 3 though. That's unlimited and one big and extra reason why I bought the game again on Steam.

Anyway, like someone said above. The craziness in SR2 was different than 3 or even 4. Back then crazy sh*t can happen in side missions, which are optional, instead of flat-out non-sense crazy for the whole game.

I'd like to see the Saint's Row series rebooted and go back to the routes of Saint's 1 & 2.

Things started getting weird with 3, how a mass murdering psychopathy gang-banger become a movie star? How'd that same person then become president of the USA in 4? Hopefully the series can return to it's routes.

I'd like to see a rebooted Saint's Row be a retelling of the Saint's 1 and 2 story with better physics, graphics, and more in-depth character creator. Saint's 2 can then continue the story how it should of been continued (aka through the life of a gangster/mod boss) and we can undo all the foolishness of Saints 3 & 4.

When should we expect a announcement? Id like to see it be between saints row 1 and 2

One of the Volition employees mentioned on Twitter that they were working on something that they were hoping to show off "soon," if he's referring to a new SR title, then I'd guess an announcement might come sometime this year, maybe at E3.

They actually wanted to set a PSP title called "Saints Row: Undercover" between SR1 and 2 where you would play as an undercover cop, but following the popularity of 2 they decided to make it a direct sequel. Then it ended up getting canceled. Finding out what happened between 1 and 2 would have been nice though, since there was the almost immediate downfall of the Saints and the power vacuum that resulted in the other gangs taking over, Ultor's rise, etc. But I think that's better suited for a smaller title like what they had in mind, a major release would probably likely be a direct sequel to something (or just a complete reboot of the series at this point).

If they set a game between sr1 and 2 I've kinda wanted to play as Carlos's brother. In SR2 he said his brother was a member of the saints while the boss was in the coma.

Now what if while the boss was in the coma Carlos's brother was in charge of the Saints for a bit or rises up in the ranks to be somewhat important then they get wiped out.

Carlos' brother would be an interesting protagonist for a game set between 1 and 2. I could picture him rising up the ranks in the middle of a power struggle though, maybe even a civil war within the Saints (which is the idea they had for Saints Row: Undercover). Different sets fighting each other, while SR2's gangs slowly make their appearance.

Also, here's a tweet that I saw Volition made just today regarding the possibility of remasters of SR1 and 2.

https://twitter.com/DSVolition/status/976815750039162880?ref_src=twcamp%5Ecopy%7Ctwsrc%5Eandroid%7Ctwgr%5Ecopy%7Ctwcon%5E7090%7Ctwterm%5E3

I know this was known before, but I'm just posting it again since I know some people might not be familiar with this. Although, if a Saints Row 5 does come (and at this point, it's a pretty safe bet that SR5 is indeed what they're working on) and if it actually does well enough to restart interest in the series (and, most importantly, if it makes a ton of money) then I wonder if the incentive would be there to just go ahead and recreate a lot of the original code for the first two games so that remasters, or just plain ports to Xbox One and PS4, could be possible. Of course, Volition being the small studio that they are, would either spend a ton of time on this when they could be doing something else, or it'd be done through a third-party company.

I'd like something along the lines of SR2/3, taking the best elements of both.

And as long as we still get to make our own character and can play the story co-op I'll be pretty thrilled.

I remember when they released the character creator for SR3 a few weeks before the game came out, and that was the first big thing that a lot of people were disappointed about. Volition then said that the reason for this was because while their new system looked much better and performed better than SR1 and 2, layering clothing with it was impossible to do, so they just stuck you with individual interchangeable outfits. They clearly took a lot of steps back with 3.

Oh yeah, and you couldn't even wear socks anymore. It looked really stupid to have a full suit and shoes with no visible socks at all.

And as long as we still get to make our own character and can play the story co-op I'll be pretty thrilled.

I'm sure co-op would come back. Honestly, as much of a disappointment that I thought SR3 was, I still had a great time playing it with a friend, and I wish I could have done that with SR2 considering that game was even better and had a lot more to do.

I'd like something along the lines of SR2/3, taking the best elements of both.

And as long as we still get to make our own character and can play the story co-op I'll be pretty thrilled.

Yea custom character creation is a must. I loved that element of these games.
They need to have layers return again; iirc the first (or second) game allowed you to put on a t shirt or something then a jacket, gloves hats etc all being separate items

I hated the latter games' preset outfits

Yea max customizability would be great.
