Got the game about two weeks ago and... it's  not that bad as a game. I mean sure, the story is ridiculous, especially how it starts. So four roommates, two of which are in gangs, another one is an investor and we just started working for a mercenary company, and we can't pay rent? Now that's reaching.

Also the characters themselves, I can't say anything without offending someone somewhere so I'm just going to drop it.

The potential was there, if we only had more convincing characters and story, or anything more believable than what we got. And I'm not trying to say it needs to be like Max Payne or GTA IV but who ever created these bozos must've thought this is how gangstaz act.

Gameplay wise it's alright.  Shooting is ok, I like the little extra moves I can pull off with putting a grenade up someone's pants and throwing them back into their buddies, or the double SMG spin. The finishers add some variety to fights too (the bitchslap one is my favorite) mixing it all up with shooting is a fun time, definitely not bored with combat. Although lack of any cover system is a bit odd, and the crouching feels off.

Driving is fine for me, I usually adapt quickly to any driving physics so not a gamebreaker for me. The lack of a dedicated hand break button is a bit weird though, because as fun as the drift button is it won't allow me to do certain moves. But I still enjoy driving at high speeds, doing stunts and drive like a maniac.

Customization is great, for someone who always complained about clothing options in GTA IV and V this is nice, I can mix and match so much, change colors too. I always felt like R* wanted you to dress their characters a certain way, and I'm talking about single player, not Online.

Car customization is also robust, I found a 50's looking pickup and turned it into a panel truck, options are not limitless but it's nice that every car has a lot of parts, not just few. Also I can change wheel size, neon's, engine sounds etc.

And speaking of sounds, my goodness the radio sucks. There are no memorable songs, everything is just lacking, and one station that gave me hope was the Outrun station or whatever is called but those songs just don't pop. And what's with the east coast hip hop station, they're all good but they feel out of place in a southwestern city.

This is definitely where I put the flashdrive in and listen to my own music, I'd recommend some songs that would be a great fit

You Can't Quit Me Baby by Queens Of The Stone Age

Hung On A Hook by Alice In Chains

Outside by The Game feat. YG

G Season by TI feat. Meek Mill

Midnight Rider by FAZZIO

Time Crime (Turboslash Remix) by Scandroid

Game world on the other hand, I love it. I always felt a certain way for deserts, and this game scratches that itch well.

Rojas desert to the east gives those Monument Valley vibes I liked in some parts of Bone County in San Andreas and parts of Mexico from Red Dead Redemption.

The dusty neighborhoods next to it remind me of Total Overdose, it's always hazy up there with sand in the air most of the time giving that low draw distance feel we had during Playstation 2 days.

El Dorado is suppose to be Vegas section of the map with casinos down the strip, again giving me DejaVu of Las Venturas, and Fallout New Vegas strangely, especially with the desert mountains to the west.

The rest of the map is not bad either, the downtown for the most part is a mix of buildings from Dallas and Houston. Other areas have that nice wild west feel to it with abandoned mines, lots of train tracks with the actual trains running around the world.

Honestly I enjoy driving around the map and doing all kinds of stuff in it, sure the world is not as alive like some other titles but it does enough to feel like a real location. There's going to be car crashes on the side of the road, cops pulling people over, ambulances, people driving ATV's in the desert, little camps here and there and even coyotes. People will talk, be on their phones, dance, backyards are not empty and have people grilling or dancing and certain areas will have different peds depending on the time of day, like El Dorado will have tourists during the day but gimp suit wearing guys and prostitutes at night. It's not like GTA V is perfect because I can punch a guy in that game and everyone in a two block radius loses their sh*t and runs for their lives.

Maybe my outlook on it is different since I bought it a year later with most of the issues fixed. Still, this is not the worst game like some people claim to be, and yes, again the main cast is lacking in any depth or character to them, but pushing them aside makes for an enjoyable time. Reminds me of simpler times in games, do missions, blow things up, drive the cars fast, escape the cops.

I'm playing it on PS4 so graphically it's not the best, then again I grew up playing Driver 2, True Crime, GTA Vice City on consoles so issues like pop ups, muddy graphics and overall jank give me more of a nostalgia trip if anything.

Could've looked better, could've been better, but it's alright.

I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if they had forced the direction of SR22 on Volition to an extent

Having watched flippys and sgzs videos, Ofc, not saying DS wasn't without fault, I just personally feel, between the dogsh*t PR, lack of communication with fans and dreadful writing and reveal, Volition fumbled their hand hard when they could have just set a flexible yet tonally consistent vision and given fans what they wanted.

They had 5 years to work on the reboot after all, and clearly they messed up during the writing phase, which all things considered, ever since 3, theyve always had a problem with tone and consistency, always hopping on trends, not to mention you could tell from the writing, the mechanics, the way they advertised etc that they had too many cooks, didnt have the heart anymore and were just aiming for the bare minimum. No shogo or carlos moments of emotional gravity, just safe, investor friendly and overly 'trendy' games with the occasional asspull (Johnnys death, earth blowing up) especially after 3.

The publisher interfering is one thing, studio identity and management is a whole other ball game. The passion just didnt feel like it was there and i feel like they made a game they secretly didnt like. I can guarantee even if it was any other publisher giving them the green light I have an inkling Volition would still make this crap. Add their blatant disrespect towards fans, this begs the ultimate set of questions; why should i buy it? And what is the incentive for me to play this game?

In the words of kutthroatballa. The ball was on the tee and all they had to do was hit it.

The game has it's problems sure, but for once I feel like I'm playing a game, not some try hard simulation like most modern games strive for.

Story for the most part was meh, and the Love Shack karaoke ending is probably one of the most cringe things I've seen, but the game world just works for me. Early on in the game few weeks back, when I was doing some mission I saw this...

Saints-Row-20231018174314.png

...after that I knew I would love the setting and explore every nook and cranny.

Turned of the HUD and without any guides I went on and the experience was enjoyable, for both the deserts and the city. At least that's where I found my enjoyment of the game, I know everyone's experience is different and people look for different things in games, but getting 100% and finishing all the ventures was definitely better than the story.

Not that anyone would care, but the final DLC pack for the reboot is now out, probably the last bit of content we'll ever see from Volition, Saints Row or otherwise. Don't get too excited though, it's just a Halloween-related cosmetic pack with new Halloween-related clothes, emotes, crib items and a flying broomstick...which is essentially just a reskinned hoverboard.

That Mr. Poop costume is probably the perfect metaphor for how the game's tone, story and characters turned out.

You know you done f*cked your entire sh*t up when you make GTA V's writing, story and character look industry changing by comparison sake. GTA V's narrative and writing is actually not bad in retrospective. I feel extremely bad for mistreating V's writing and narrative all these years when we got even worse dogsh*t writing and storytelling to ever come out of the gaming sphere.

Oh man, the Halloween stuff comes out now? after I finished the ghost hunts. They dropped us a turd as a final goodbye.

I literally stopped playing the game two days ago because well I got 100%, and for some strange reason the game started to crash every day, as soon as I had all the districts and build the Saints Tower and got all the side stuff done the game started crashing either after 20min, 1 hour etc.

After five days of dealing with this I just gave up, even reinstalled the game to no avail. Before there was not a single crash in around 100hrs of play, I still stand by my enjoyment of the game but man, only have a handful of trophies left to platinum and few weapons and challenges left now this crap.

P.S.

So I followed an advice from Reddit and someone mentioned to put the default gang members on, didn't specify exactly so I made all three bozos wear their default Saints clothes and just kept the 2 basic gang members roaming the streets and surprisingly played for three hours without a single crash.

It's still cheap on CDkeys and I'm honestly really tempted to pick it up for something to sink some mindless hours into, just shooting stuff and customisting a character, but I know the moment I buy it they'll announce it's coming to Games Pass, lol.

It's on sale on Steam. I bought it since I was a big fan of Saints Row 3 (less of SR4). SR2022 is somehow more cringey than SR4. I'm trying to enjoy the game, but it's hard to overlook the constant attempts to be funny.

I also got an infinite loading screen/black screen after the first mission. There's no autosave file that I can load for some reason, so I guess I have to play through that again. I don't know if I should keep playing or just refund it while I can.

I downloaded this when it was available to download as a free PS+ game a couple months back.

Deleted it after a couple hours

It's fallen under 10 quid on CDKeys now but I just know it'll end up on GP a week after I buy it and I know I'll probably be livid that I spent a whopping 8 pound on the game, lol.

I saw on the gamingleaks subreddit a video was uploaded a few days saying how the previous vision they had for the game was scrapped, Is that anything new?

I just got through the Dustmoot side quest. So we got a guy in the gang that wears a neon glitter blazer, thick frame glasses, is unable to shoot a gun, and is also a fan of LARP? And another member is a DJ/influencer/failed chef that is allergic to wearing shirts.

If those two were replaced with more believable members, I feel like this game wouldn't have gotten nearly as much crap as it did. The rest of the game isn't bad.

The game is getting pretty cheap on CDKeys now so I thought I might pull the trigger, but  before I did I checked out a recently released video on the state of it, it was only a few days old.

Jesus f*cking christ the open world is so dead still lol. I can deal with the rubbish story if I have an open world that feels fun to explore but it looks soooooooooooooooooo unbelievably dead it's actually crazy.

It completely put me off again. I think I'll wait for it either to come to GP or be given away on EGS or something.

This game is $13.49 on Steam right now, 55% off. I paid $20 for it about a month ago, and even though I haven't finished it yet, I feel like for $13, it's worth picking up if you want something similar to SR3/4. Think of it as an expansion pack. 😂

You can get a Steam key for £6.49 at CDKeys, which is the cheapest place to buy it. There is speculation it might be given out for free via EGS's holiday giveaways though.

Trust me when you guys play this game you will be so bored of it in a couple of minutes. The shooting isn’t fun, the customization is okay but theres not many cars to customize. The city is pretty, i will give it that but like others has stated, there is absolutely not a fun thing to do in it. I would wait until you can play it for free, I literally bought the game at launch for retail and sold it the next day even though i lost money from it.

im so harsh on this game because saint row 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games, they balanced a gritty story and fun gameplay well.

it would have been atleast playable if the characters were written more seriously.

The speculation turned out to be true - in 7 minute's as of this post, from the 30th to the 31st, Saints Row 22 will be free on PC the EGS.

I played the intro, will play more later, but the whole intro felt like a cartoon lol. It wasn't SR1-2 gangbangers and it wasn't SR3 taking over the penthouse to Power, it was a really weird vibe. I had heard from people that they failed to really make a game that pleases either side of the fan base (1-2 vs 3-4) but yea, to feel that so strongly in the first mission was weird. Also, f*ck me the amount of scene transitions in that jet scene, lmao.

I did see the intro cutscene with the gang and while they came of as expected the fact that they are already criminals before the game starts isn't too bad, I mean they do drop the "I need to pay off my student loans" line but as I hadn't really spoiled the story for my self I was sorta expecting the first job to my first grocery story robbery, but it's not.

Special shout out to the games performance though, which is pretty bad even with FSR2 running, and also the combat and movement which on keyboard/mouse is really sorta... loose? It doesn't feel clunky like I'm fighting the controls, but it doesn't feel tight to play either.

Lot of the customisation stuff is good but my god what a dogsh*t hair and eyebrow selection, lol. The eyes also look pretty horrible still too.

I think it might have to do with the way the guns are designed in the game. The way the guns are meh. The enemies do not react out guns too. If we compare RDR 2 to this, The aiming in RDR is kinda bad due to it's random gun sway, But, the actual feeling of the gun is excellent and they way enemies react to gun shoots is excellent too. The euphoria physics probably helps too.

The shooting is very, very bloomy which doesn't help, feels more like you're spraying vs being accurate.

Also... this is the quietest open world game I've ever played. Ever.

There is ZERO ambience in this game, the world feels completely dead at all times, I'm driving around near empty streets and the only sound I hear is the quiet sound of the car and the radio. Walk the streets and it's NPC's standing around throwing out the odd one liner, but nothing more.

It's really, really bizarre honestly lol.

Double post but f*ck it, this game is so weird to the point it's sort of interesting to play lol.

I've not even started the gang yet but in two missions so far I've had to restart due to pure jank - one time I side swiped into a game (which is a really, really weird mechanic on it's own) and somehow ended up pressed up against a building on the nose of my car. Restart. The other time I was heading to a place and tried to spin around with space (which is drift) and I span around, hit a wall and a flew out windscreen into the ocean and triggered an out of bounds, and had to restart from checkpoint. Seriously, a strong wind sends you out of the wind shield in this game.

Also I have no f*cking idea how they thought this bullet spongyness was a good thing. It's like I take down 2-3 enemies max with a full clip of AR - and those armoured enemies? Christ almighty. They're not even armoured visually, some Idol guy was walking around with no t-shirt on and it took a year to kill him, to the point I've now lowered enemy durability in the options to lessen the sponge.

As for the story/missions, I sorta like some ideas, the idea of a gang and a HQ and interacting with the gang and chatting w/ them off mission, sorta Mass Effect like. The story its self is so-so so far, when my character is on their own it's pretty serviceable but Eli and Kev just look and sound forced when it comes to their look and how they're written.

The missions though, they're fun in a shooting stuff is fun sense but it's like they were sat in meetings coming up with them and they'd come up with a decent idea and just before they were about to finish up someone butts in and goes "...YEA BUT WHAT IF WE HAD ROCKET LAUNCHERS?" "LASER BEAMS!" etc and they all went "f*ck yea!". Things just happen with no build up or context, I was doing a mission where we're escaping and all of a sudden I have an RPG and am shooting at a million cars that I can catch spawning 20m behind us.

The combat is sorta fun but it is pure jank, the skills and abilities are all jank as f*ck and the combat doesn't flow together... like... at all. Switching between weapons is jank, using skills is jank, dodging is jank, it's all jank lol.

For so much talk pre-release about finding the balance of SR1-2 and SR3-4, regardless if they lean one way or try find a middleground, this game honestly just feels like it's trying really hard to be a Saints Row game but the team who made it had no idea what made a Saints Row game a Saints Row game, be it SR1-2 or SR3-4, and instead they've created a game that looks and plays like it should feel like a Saints Row game but in a very strange to experience way having played the originals, it ends up feeling nothing like any Saints Row game.

Quality of the game aside (which is not good), the game is just bloody weird lmao.

I haven't finished the game yet, but from what I remember with the shooting, you can just aim in the general direction of an enemy, and press aim (RMB), and it would auto-aim on their head, then just click LMB to headshot them.

Once I figured that out, killing enemies was easy. With a revolver or high damage weapon, it's like a one hit kill.

Also, getting the Tornado helicopter early on makes a lot of stuff in the game trivial.

I turned of all the aim assist and lock on pretty much instantly, lock on with a mouse is always weird to me. Using pistols or the single shot rifles and was pinging headshots and it was fun enough but the tougher enemies being bullet spongey is just nasty.

Also the HUD/UI in general is way too much, I've turned off enemy and vehicle health bars which IMO is an improvement but I can't seem to turn off the endless amount of pop ups for skills and stuff which is annoying. The phone also has problems, it's fine, but everything has a load up animation and it all just feels a little slow and sluggish. The weapon wheel is also weird, I put my skills on my 1-4 keys cause the skill wheel is really weird to use on PC otherwise, so I'm using the weapon wheel to switch weapons atm and it feels like it never registers my weapon swaps half the time, might have to figure some other control binds for that.

Also one more thing, this game has a really weird selection of hairstyles lol. There's staple haircuts that are just missing, like a classic ponytail, instead most hairstyles are silly or over the top. Despite having quite a few options it's the worst selection of styles I've seen in a while in a game honestly.

So, having played quite a bit more, although I still reckon I've got quite a bit to go, I do wanna say that SR22 does get better as you play it and content opens up and the story starts to settle in.

But it's still a big mess. I've not played many games with such a wildly inconsistent tone as SR22 has, the whole game feels like a bunch of people had their own individual ideas and threw them in there, be it content, missions, story, character stuff, whatever, cause so much of the game feels at odds with the rest of the game, as if the team making it weren't all on the same page.

On top of that, the game suffers from a remarkable lack of depth in the writing and mission design. For example, I was doing a mission where I'm gonna go to a gangs HQ and blow up a bunch of cars and kill a bunch of people. Classic SR mission pretty much right? So the mission starts and it's like so how are we gonna get into this heavily fortified place.. well, we're gonna steal a working and armed military helicopter. I thought oh cool, we're gonna have to steal one from a place and that'll be a whole thing, so Neenah asks how are we gonna get it? "A tourist place just happens to have them that they use for tours." So... we just walk up to this heli and steal it, we have to kill one guy, a bodyguard. Job done, off to the HQ. Then we're blowing up all the cars on their front... but oh wait, this gang also just happens to have military assault heli's too.

The game is FULL of these massive, insane jumps in plot and escalation, there's very little run up, sh*t just happens and escalates instantly. There's another mission where you're breaking a dude out of prison, but there's no planning, no prep, the mission goes from "lets break this dude out" to landing on the roof within a cutscene. It's a shame, cause that particular mission is actually kinda cool and has some cool ideas behind it, it's just undercooked like everything else.

On top the topic of undercooked, the missions (as does a lot of the playable content) feel like they got very little iteration, very little development. A lot of it feels like it was whipped together in a day or two and that was that, job done. Very little in the way of cool set pieces, very little in the way of fun use of music like they did in 3 and 4. Everything feels a bit bare, and this isn't helped by the ancient tech the game is running on, the game has a lot of transitions and cutscene transitions and while most them aren't too bad, in 2024 I think it could all be done better.

But yea, it all feels like a cartoon that's trying to one up its self, it feels either lazy or like a game that was developed in a rush.

The cars are almost all horrendous lol. It's bizarre, but the scale of most of them is completely off. Most of them are either too small, too narrow or too short, there's a Mustang-esque vehicle for example and it looks like a good foot too short, it looks like a crappy toy car. The high end supercars are the same, the scale and proportions of most stuff is just completely whack. The best looking vehicle I've seen and it's the one I use is the big USA style SUV that you can turn into a SWAT SUV, that and the other big pick up truck are by far the best proportioned vehicles in the game I'd say.

I noticed this type of stuff immediately lol, I made a post a week or so ago where I talked about how in a very early mission the game just hands you an RPG in a mission and tells you to go nuts. The game is one upping its self every mission, I mean I've already got a hoverbike and the Church hasn't even had a lick of paint yet.

It's like they're speedrunning going from SR1 to SR4 levels of silly in one game. You start off on your arse, then like 4 or 5 main story missions later you've got a hoverbike and an assault heli in your garage.

It's exactly the sh*t that resulted in SR4 and them developing Saints Row as a franchise into a corner. When your gangbanger game has aliens as the main plot point, you have no where else to go. Saints Row 22 doesn't have aliens (at least not yet in the story lmao) but immediately the stakes and crazyness have gotten ridiculous meaning that it can only get more and more crazy. Crazy for the sake of it isn't good, it might be fun in a brainless way, but when crazy is the norm the rest of the game ahs to be crazy but the rest of the game is trying to be a million other things, including a more grounded gang story, so the tone of the game is just a complete mess.

Favorite car was the courser, nelson in previous SR games. Its basically the only bmw in the series.

god, i wish this game didnt suck, i need more open world games. Replaying mafia 2 and its so easy to get immersed in that game. Why dont game companies try to do that anymore. Also, watchdogs2 sh*ts all over sr2022
