Is it better on PSP or PS2?

Last time I played this game was 10 years ago on the PlaysStation 2. I''m planning to play VCS again in near future. I was thinking about trying it on PSP since I have never played PSP version before.

What is overall more pleasant experience? My main concern about PSP version is small screen size.

Would you recommend PSP version or PS2 version?

PSP for better performance and portability and cheat device.

PS2 for new stuff / bug fixes and better graphics with sh*ttier performance.

You should just get an emulator, better graphics and better performance both for PSP and PS2

Though you should have a decent machine to run the PS2 emulator at a playable frame rate.

If you're concerned about playing on a small screen get the PS2 version. If you want an objectively better looking and performing experience get the PSP version.

The extra content for the PS2 version isn't worth it imo. Just more rampages, side missions and such.

so if you want to make an informed decision I'd highly recommend his video. Edited by RetroMystic

I'd recommend PSP since the graphics look better, however there is the notorious Garage bug which pretty much deletes any vehicle you store under certain circumstances, but that should only bother you if you want to collect Special Vehicles. Or just get PPSSPP.

The Coconut Kid

I have played both and if screen size is an issue for you then I would say as someone who is partially blind in one eye to definitely go with the PS2 version. It's the only one that is playable for me. Feels a bit stretched out at times and as other people have pointed out, performs poorly when there's a lot going on but if you're lucky enough to have a PS2 or a backwards compatible PS3, then go for it. I really do hope they release it for download on PS4 soon.

Can someone explain this PSP has better graphics over PS2?

As far as i know PS2 has extra trails effect, which brings nice lighting to game and can be turned off. And on top of that PS2 has better texture quality for most of the parts.

they probably mean better graphics as in more clean-looking. in that sense I think it is, but I still prefer the ps2 graphics.

as you said, the extra trails option brings nice lightening and also I think it adds more to the atmosphere/setting of the city.

I don't think anyone here has said it has better graphics more-so just better performance. I don't know if it's just me either but the PS2 game looks kind of...blurry? I can't quite explain it.

I agree , i thought the PS2 has better graphic's then the PSP, but the PSP is the worst for rampage's & any other mission's because it doesn't have free camera so it's kind of a pain in the ass to do certain missions . Also not to mention the drive by system on PSP is annoying as well..

I'd recommend the PS2 version.

No idea why you wouldn't pick the PSP version. I mean, it's GTA on the go, what's not to love?

this

also psp version lacks details like floating leaves, newspapers and probably more stuff like that

PS2 version is just better in every way when it comes to graphics.

the only thing that people might not like is the trails effect but it can be turned off

I'm like f*cking 99% blind and it's gotten worse the past 10 years. sh*t - the vision I had back then... f*ck it, why should anyone care anyway?

I can belive those who say PS2 haS wprse performance

because I remember setting up a brothel in Vice BEACH ANd all of a susudden game was lagging like motherf*cker. I thought my game was broken or something.

And emulator is not the real thing. This is why I'm happy to play authentic original AO PS2 SA right now amd I think I'm gonna replay this one on PS2 as well as soon as I am finished with my other games. VCS after all i think is one of the finest GTAs after GTAIV.

PS2 has better graphics only when playing on CRT tv. PS2 games look like sh*t on HDTVs even when using component cable at 576i. Theres so much flickering of building outlines and oncoming traffic, its crazy. I don't know how people get their ps2 games looking so clear in youtube videos.

So ps2 having better graphics on modern hdtv is bullsh*t. I believe that PSP has clearer image because of the built in display. I gotta try the psp version someday.

Maybe if we are talking about PS2 and PSP devices, then probably last will have more crisp picture.

But once you get emulators, and run both console games I would prefer PS2.

By default you get 640x480, but its really easy to push resolution, add anisotropic filtering and anti aliasing.

Plus get some shaders added, that will add scanlines filter on top of the game and hide some small artifacts.

Spoiler

kf8VjXP.png

Maybe image is not that representative, because after upload it gets compressed, and scanlines don't look that good in comparison to image quality while running game.

This is running on

- i5 4460,

- GTX660,

- 12GB RAM.

Settings

- Renderer D3D11 HW

- 3x native

- Anisotropic filtering x16

- Shaders: scanlines + FXAA

My hardware can run it or in 2x native + MSAA, or 3x native + FXAA. If you get into more hardcore settings, my machine starts to dip from 60fps.

More modern cards easily can push 4x 5x resolution, and you will get even more crisp picture.

I think OpenGL had the Radar fixed on PCSX2. should try that, i remember it running well on a build of PCSX2 1.5.0 but i think now it's even more playable

See if it has any performance dips, if it has some i don't really mind that since the ps2 version runned crap for me too i have it. But i think i have the pal version wich is automatically 50fps instead of 60 with ps2 games.

I have about the same graphics card as you. 750 ti is a close comer to the 660. FX 8150 AMD eight core.

the build i played is from a year back so i guess a lot has been worked on from the dev builds

8g RAM btw, should do it still.

It's the PAL version that gets it even worse, i think the US version gets rid of some of the fps drops but jesus was Liberty city stories a hell on my ps2, in emulation liberty city stories doesn't work either at full speed so that means thats the game.

Yea, at first I grabbed 1.4 version, and then asked on github, why this is not fixed yet.

And got response: no one cares about 1.4 version. Then I realized that by default you are getting old 2016build. With 1.5 dev builds, everything works fine.

Already completed both Stories games, on that emulator.

Played Liberty City Stories after, and found out that it runs slightly worse than VCS. There are more noticeable FPS dips, in comparison to VCS.

VCS rarely had dips to 80% of emulator speed, but LCS quite often could go to 60%.

I managed to get more performance just by closing browser, which in my case often eats a lot of RAM, because over9000 tabs are opened.

Plus LCS have minor text border artifacts if game rendering is set to higher than 2x.

I like PS2 versions more because they are more graphically rich.

Also if you add diagonal TV shader, it helps to hide ... (don't know how to explain that), IMO it look better with it. 😃

f*ck this emulator sh*t. I got  a six core CPU now but Id still rather play games on systems they were intended for. Emulators aren't for me. Even modern games I play without AA. AF and depth of field even if I can without performance cost- I just love my games natural. AF 16x would definetly ruin GTA VCS vibe, f*ck that sh*t.

If you're emulating and have a decent CPU, I'd pick the PS2 version.

Latest PCSX2 with settings:

• OpenGL Hardware.

• 4x Resolution Scale (optional).

• (ingame) Trails = Off.

For real hardware or emulating on a lower end CPU, I'd pick PSP.

Agreed. Emulator is a good thing only if you're going for reverse engineering stuff or modding something on the console versions. Though it isn't fesiable because of the amout of time it would take.

Otherwise, I'd say get it on PS2. Even if it lags alot, at least the game looks better. PSP is mostly recycled sh*t from the original versions III/VC.

Such of a fan of this game that I have both the strategy guides for the PSP and PS2. My guess would be on PS2 just cause of the small added content.
