What Do You Want From A Map Expansion?

A GTA Forums Thread

By Willy A. Jeep

Ym9SQtp.jpg

Since I started browsing the GTA Forums' Online subsection in late 2016, I have always seen posts here from people talking about what they want to see in a map expansion for the Online (and sometimes singeplayer, interestingly) worldspace. An escape from Southern San Andreas in the form of... whatever they fancy, be it Liberty City and Alderny, San Fierro and Las Venturas, Vice City and Carcer, or even somewhere entirely new. It both partly bothered me how these posts were so scattered, and also made me interested in cataloguing all of the different ideas that people come up with. You're all quite creative!

So, here's the point of this thread: I want to provide a place for people to share their ideas and hopes specifically for map expansions and additions, while not necessarily suggesting that this is what should happen or what will happen, and, too, to hopefully create some interesting dialogue between people on this very topic. What do you want from a map expansion? Modern Vice City? Post-Sandy Liberty? The industrial wasteland of Carcer? A huge desert full of ghost towns and secret government facilities like Bone County? London: 1969? A GTA take on New Austin and West Elizabeth? The moon?

We've all seen a few of the more popular fan-made examples, like these (and the one above):

qVT7EsS.jpg362BS2D.jpg

And they've got some merit, sure. And I'd like to see more of that! What interesting and unique concept maps we all can create, working together! But they don't nearly go to the level of detail that is needed for building the worlds we want to explore (and destroy, as it happens), and are pretty vague when it comes to theme or era. How will Rockstar ever know what you want beyond "more" if you don't tell them? If we don't tell them? Remember, fellas, we're all in this together! It's a small world, after all. And I want to see how we can change that.

Do you want more houses out in Blaine County? How about a specific overpriced retail store in Las Venturas? Do you like the looks of those hiking trails on San Fierro's hills? Where's that house from Gorillaz's recent album in Carcer? Maybe you'd like to revisit the Back o' Beyond and actually see a large hairy man? Get detailed! Get out there on Google Maps and really discover what you want! Put in that effort that the fine folks in the Vehicles subforum give for their automobile research, and maybe you'll see the fruits of your labor some day. Or, atleast, you'll have a decent place to reference and conceptualize with the rest of the community over a topic that has, in my opinion, gone far too long without a proper, dedicated thread. I hope this provides a place for that purpose.

TL;DR? Here's a handy checklist.

This thread is for:

  • Creating and sharing ideas about map expansions (IE Las Venturas as a new explorable city with all the fixins')
  • Creating and sharing ideas for new additions to the already-existing worldspace of Southern San Andreas (IE new major structures or updates to the already-existing ones)
  • Showing off community-created maps, models, et cetera for the future of SSA (IE A model of a GTA-universe Wilshire Grand Center or a new mansion located in Cape Catfish)
  • Discussing how this would be achieved, and what problems/benefits such things would have (IE The impact on performance, how one would travel to-and-fro, impact on user content)
  • Getting to the real nitty-gritty level of detail that is demanded by such a task as building a city (IE What districts/towns are there, what they're like, mountain ranges, places of interest, missions)

And not for:

  • General and weak wishlisting about map expansions/additions (IE Only saying "I want Las Venturas" or "I want more houses in Sandy Shores")
  • Propagating rumors about map expansions/additions (IE "Guys I saw a new billboard..." or "Look at this leaked map I found in my janitor friend's garbage!")
  • Discussing official additions to the map after they have been released outside of future reuse or exemplary use (IE "Don't you guys just love that new marina in Grapeseed?")
  • Doubting the likelihood of a map expansion (IE "It'll never happen because...")
  • Selling real-life real estate because we all already spent our money on Shark Cards (IE "I've got a beautiful plot of land in Nigeria that my prince friend just vacated...")

I hope I can be a benefit to this community that, in the long run, has been very dedicated in it's adoration of Grand Theft Auto, and I hope I can help better the games from here. Easier than moving to Scotland!

Yeah, it's definitely a Wishlist topic, but I'm glad to see it out on it's own in the Online section, as I always miss things when they're put in the smaller buckets.

That said, for me, I'm fairly simple in what I want.

• new areas to explore

• new interiors

• new Survival locations

• new jobs, missions, etc.

• new contacts

• potential new racing courses to compete on

• new businesses

• interesting new residential and urban layouts

• new street lamps, fire hydrants, newspaper boxes, and trash cans to plow through

• and new NPCs with new dialogues

However, the problem with my "wishlist" is that I think these things will more likely come in a brand new GTA package, not an expansion map.

I expect at least a few more DLCs to drop before we see any new GTA products launched, and while I'm holding my breath for an expansion, I can't say I see one on the horizon.

I wish I were wrong. Cheers and thanks for the well-thought thread! Cheers! :)

Long story short, I'd want any map expansion to offer just what this map does. So much immersion, such detail, so dynamic with players doing all sorts. Buying clothes and such, tuning cars, sports, businesses, freemode events, gang attacks. And all the external missions/combat jobs/races we can launch and get stuck into, heists, survivals, there really is just so much we can do on this map.

Anything added must offer much of this too. So much.

IMHO. Too much to be added and reworked for them to give to us via an optional payment. Look at the day one/week one figures, and world records, and then the recurring spending since that came because this map offers so much.

There's awesome potential out there all right though. Just we'll need a new game, and probably better consoles to get a world like those maps.

I love that 2nd picture though, that's the dream.

Im still hoping for a map expansion but don`t believe we ever get it. It`s to much work for them they rather just release more content for the map we currently have. They want to earn as much money as possible with the least effort. That`s just the way it is.

Sure, it can be looked at that way, and I know how frowned upon it is to post new topics when there's a topic already open that could potentially encompass it. I wanted something similar to how the Vehicles subforum has it's own wishlist/speculation thread for map addition/expansion, plus provide a place to formulate new ideas on the topic and, with luck, collect the majority of these ideas into one thread rather than spread out all across the Online board.

Thanks for the compliment! This has been cooking in the back of my mind since... well, 2016. I'm not a very good forum wizard, though, so my presentation is a little lackluster, but I think I did my best in putting out what I thought needed to be done. And the comment about "new street lamps, fire hydrants, newspaper boxes, and trash cans" is exactly the level of detail I'm hoping to see here!

I don't know about 2018, but seeing as GTA Online just received the stunning Doomsday Heist, I'd vote that the team is perfectly capable of setting forth and creating something fantastic in the map overhaul sense. Especially if it's been in the works for a while as a back-burner "distant future" project or a certain returning east-coast city. But, hey! This thread is for conceptualizing, not moping about what won't be! If Rockstar is actually reading any of what we say here, this can serve as a launching point for details we want to see in the next GTA Online, though the focus of this remains for this iteration. Get your thinking hat on! Go scout Google Maps or even boot up the game and really define what you like! And come back here and share it, even if it's not this thread. I just want to promote the community's involvement in this game, because Rockstar obviously listens, and we've got to shout as loud as Happy Hunter if we want to be heard.

As much as I love the idea of an expansion to our existing map, and how much I love fantasizing over map concepts, like those you've posted, I don't think we're getting one.

It was a feverdream in 2013 that we would get one, maybe even the possibility to go back to Liberty City. But I can't imagine we'd get one now, in 2018, with RDR2 coming up. I'd love to be proven wrong, I really would.

For what I would want to see, pretty much what KWF and fw3 said.

But as I said, I love these kinds of threads.

That's fair. Just, well, everything that makes this map so dynamic is the bare minimum we should expect, IMO.

Lots of little things that people often overlook out there, from gang attacks, to all these niche areas that kind of take the piss out of every stereotype imaginable, lol. A new map short of all that might add to the growing complaints some have regarding the game at times if all these 'basics' are overlooked and it's less an area we can immerse ourselves in. To this day, this maps general shortcuts, like on heists and such, just feel so well planned out, you know?. This game is just so well made for it's time, and the fact they could add this much too shows it really was a great, well planned map.

A lot of this DLC since 2016/17 is just re-tooling of things and such, but on this map, as it's already there so minimises effort/costs, while maximising profit from an optional revenue. These map expansions are just something different, involving far more work. Indeed, they could have had this on the horizon from a while back and be so far ahead than I give credit for too, absolutely do I feel it could come too, don't get me wrong, just I feel the expectations could be not as well thought out, and I don't want it if it's not as good, at least, than this map is..

From there, so much could come. Like any other DLC concept or often requested idea. Legitimate businesses like nightclubs, shipping/naval DLC, Tuners, Cops and Robbers, anything they did before could return, gyms, bowling, all sorts really. Plus, the bigger the land, the chances things like railways and airports and docks would see better use from a role-play/missions POV too. To have to go from city to city via other transport for story based missions and such could be fun too.

Endless list of possibilities, but they only can come, if the base is solid. Like a pizza, it's just dough, but a sh*t base, sh*t pizza.

If it were down to a choice between adding San Fierro or Las Venturas, I'd want SF for sure. The whole Vegas aesthetic does nothing for me and we'd just have a flat, garish city surrounded by the same sort of desert and scrub countryside we've always had.

San Fierro has more interesting geography with the hills and mountainous bay area as well as a different, more temperate/green countryside climate, the kind we only get a small taste of in the Paleto Bay area and something I would love to see more of.

I think in all seriousness that the 'map expansion' will happen when GTA6 reaches us in 20xx, unless Rockstar change the game engine again.

GTA6 will drop with a fancy new city, new vehicles, NPCs etc., with Online 2.0x appearing shortly thereafter (or sold separately). A few years later that map will be expanded with the addition of the current South San Andreas.

But... back on topic.

What I'd want as a minimum is a separate island north of the Paleto Bay region with mainly mountainous terrain leading up to relatively flat plateaus housing North Yankton at their uppermost border. Only one or two road crossings from the mainland to the new area, giving us more incentive to use boats or air vehicles. Mostly rural inland on the flat portions with farms and small villages, and maybe a larger town to match North Yankton's size on the coastline.

Needs to be a new game. gta online has way too many gamemodes and adding hundreds more to a new map would make the current poor matchmaking even worse.

The game can barely handle the map the way it is. The last update took us back to the PS3 days.

Another update and I may as well go back to PS3.

Well!! Realistically speaking, in the beginning of gta online, there was a glitch where you did something in story mode, something with the first mission in north yankton, where you could glitch it in gta online and play with your mates in this map, including Los Santos. So it was there, you could get a plane and fly there with no problems whatsoever...it was nice to see a town with different lay outs and snowy, all year round...I don’t understand why wouldn’t they put that small map online in some kind of dlc with a naval expansion since the only way to get there would be by air or water...that, I think, they could make it happen. Not those fan arts, wich offcourse I would love even more, but down to earth, north yankton would ne nice.

So what if it comes in GTA6(So much the better; I'd like to play another GTA narrative again), I still think it would be best if they did expand the map like one of the artist renderings in the OP: a seamless integration with the GTAV map. As much as I would love to have new space to play on, my friends and I will still want to go back, not to mention the cool races and other jobs we could do that straddle both maps; like a heist ending with a high speed chase to another city. But I don't play too many online games like this. I've been meaning to try ESO and I know they expanded the map a couple times. How does it work for them?

If they're going to have it flow in the same way as the original, they'll add San Fierro/Silicon Valley next which would be an awesome landscape for the action setpieces and races.

Personally, I would love to see Bone County and Las Venturas. The rocky landscape would feel more new to us and they could make some spectacular interiors for the Casinos; turn KISS minigolf into Love Fist Minigolf. What would be troubling is how they would incorporate gambling. They couldn't allow people to gamble with the regular GTA$ AND still sell Shart Cards. They would have to add a currency that could ONLY be earned in game which is a weird thing for a game to do now a days but not unheard of: Darkzone cash in The Division. However we probably would have to buy some sort of expensive property/business/vehicle/all3 in order to earn that gamble theft auto cash. The other bish of it would be that they would also limit what you could buy with your winnings.

I remember someone saying in a video that they could add LC for the 10th anniversary of GTA4 but I'm sure it was just wishful thinking and I doubt we'd get that for free.

I was writing a long post, but misclicked Ctrl+R and now it's gone. After im done raging, i'll edit this comment to what it supposed to look like.
Anyways, you can see me talking about this idea back in a July:

Damn. I've seen a lot of "map expansions" ideas for GTA V and most of time i was drowning in the sea of dreams and ideas about what could we do with such a big map.
First, i'd like to thank you for bringing out such a topic for a discussion.

Before i'll start, i'd like to point out something. This map has way too much of countryside and lack of small villages, such as Blueberry, Montogomery, ect.

Ok, here's mine part of disscussion:
I always though that it would be cool that each city would have his topic and vehicle choice. Im not talking about what car would spawn there, im talking about what vehicle would player choose in the certain city.

Los-Santos - Sport cars, since the streets mostly have the best terrain for them. And also more casual cars of course.

Blaine County & Las-Venturas desert - This is the place for our Special Vehicles (Wastelander, Technical, ect). Real Mad Max style. As well as our trusty Air Vehicles. Finally we'd get a good reason to use Luxor to transport 4+ amount of players.

San-Fierro countryside (Flint County and Tierra Robada) - Here comes offroad vehicles. The ones, that can handle mud and hills. This would be a great palce to use offroad vehicles and/or offroad tires (Rockstar, im calling a rebalance for offroad).

San-Fierro - Since there are differences in heights in the city parts, we cannot use the sport cars that much. This city asks for more slow traffic. Maybe this city would be good for bikers. Also air vehicles wouldn't be that great, remember the skyscrapers.

Las-Venturas - Really depends on what player would like to use more. The roads are fine for sport cars, but they would be suitable on freeways only, since there are a lots of turns in the city. Also good for air vehicles too.

Vice-City - Finally a place, that would love our old dusty boats. This is the city that we could use boats in 50%-60% of missions. As long with air vehicles (can't really remember the city layout, didn't played GTA VC).

Liberty-City - Almost same as San-Fierro, but would require more walking.

I also got a though about unique weaponry. This would be same as cars, you can't meet every single car from LS in LC, for example. Each city would have unique weapons in Ammu-Nation.

(THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE) Different prices for the same guns either. Like AK would cost 8,550$ in LS and 10,000$ in VC. Also more heavily weaponry and its' ammunition would be more harder to get. Minigun and Stingers would be available around LV, since it's located near Area 69 and this could tell that criminals are ambushing weapons shippments and selling them in the city or something.

I think it will happen but in the later stages of current consoles, as ive said before on previous topics assets will be locked. The transfer will happen again as its made rockstar a fortune.

I would like San Fierro to be added, there are a lot of places in California they could add, I would love any map expansion that's not stupid Liberty City. North Yankton is all ready there so they could just work on it and bring in.

  • Discussing the startling lack of landfills in San Andreas (IE "Where do they dump all their trash?")

That second picture though!!!

I would like that very much!! " even if its going to be a paid DLC i would definetly pay for it :evilgrin:

As great as it would be, its just not going to happen. The game is far too big to add a new map to it.

If they add a huge land mass with lots of intricate detail it will have to be another FM session/lobby, and is how I hope it will be done because....

I thought the game really started getting laggy after gunrunning. Just drive through maze bank west and between the movie studio really fast. Buildings disappear, road disappears. Npc car spawning has gotten to be such a pain, nothing will be going on, and they will be running into one another. I watched an npc drive straight into a light post yesterday, nothing was going on near me.

I would welcome a map expansion if one the next updates was "bug fixes" where they updated the game to improve it rather than adding more stuff.

Hm. Seems like a lot of you guys kinda missed the point of the thread. It's not here for saying what will or won't happen - I recognize a lot of people are already disillusioned with the idea that we'll ever see anything like this, and I'm OK with that, nothing wrong with letting people know that you're mad as hell and you're not going to take this anymore. You've gotta get mad! Make everybody get up and yell about what they want!

But this thread is meant for conceptualizing and creating, not doubting or propagating opinion as truth. We can all make what we want happen, of course, and even if that doesn't get a map expansion from Rockstar, I would hope that atleast this gave some ideas for the future, or sparked inspiration in some member of this community who can give us something that resembles the dreams detailed here. A fan-made map as a mod for the PC port, with all the details as listed and created perhaps right here, because people wanted to put in the effort to let each other know what they want. This was inspired by the Vehicles subforum, and I would hope to see a similar influx of images and ideas from all around the world as a launching point for what could be, or atleast a resource for inspirations for the next gameworld we all have the pleasure of exploring in GTA VI or whatever it may be.

I would personally love to see a modern take on San Fierro. A city in perpetual change and progress, while always respecting the past and preserving what was. I would hope a modern reimagining of the city would include the iconic neighborhoods like Chinatown, the Castro, and Haight-Ashbury, and structures that have defined the San Francisco skyline, from the Transamerica Pyramid to 555 California Street to Coit Tower and the Mount Sutro transmitter. Hiking trails along the seven hills, Victorians in the Western Addition, the historic streetcars along Market Street. There's so much to supply if only more people would get up and dig, even if they don't think it's in store for Online any time soon (if ever).

I'll add a bit to the checklist to try to further clear this up. And, hey, might aswell put some pictures in a spoiler showing the kind of detail I hope to see people share here, some day.

As much as I want North Yankton and Liberty City I would want to see the og San Andreas come together first, Watch Dogs was talking sh*t about leaving GTAV for that disaster, and in the span of two games R* still hasn't done any expansions, Ubisoft created Chicago and San Francisco already wth R*? We were supposed to get San Francisco first! But yeah Watchdogs 2 has a real good representation of San Francisco, if we could get something like it that would be awesome. Besides that a modern Vegas obviously, before traveling to Vegas I wanna be able to traverse a massive f*cking desert filled with rolling hills, distant mountains and long empty flats, something I can really drive my offroading vehicles on besides climbing a f*cking mountain over and over or driving offroad in the tiny bit of desert we currently have. Having such a big empty space would help in creating a sense of distance between the cities and it would open up the possibility to receive top speed monsters such as proper rocket cars. Vegas would be real cool, a neat place to go, grab the crew and go on a road trip to travel to sin city, gamble, enjoy the shows and who knows what else we might get up to, the idea of crews is something I feel like R* has forgotten, enough doing work with people forever, once we have enough cash you just release more content to buy but don't give us any new activities to really enjoy in freeroam and to further deepen the *forgot the word* being able to enter diners with the crew and eat like a scene from so many movies (Grease, Reservoir Dogs), go to Drive-Ins, Sports games in massive stadiums or even smaller fields like imagine just cruising down mirror park and you see an actual team practicing, playing soccer right on that field. Not just diners, but most interiors like fast food joints so we can grab a bite to eat, cafes, you name it, Imagine actually eating something beyond snacks for once? I'm not sure but I swear R* added another convenience store in the next-gen release so its totally within their scope to add in other interiors around the map, hell they go back and close the doors to open interiors for no damn reason, and even go as far as to leave interiors that are fully detailed unused all these years, when are we getting that damn disco!? Watchdogs had some very interesting AI/NPCs, you could drive around and see a wedding in progress, drive up to the hills at night and you might catch some goons buying a body in a shallow grave, cops actually pull people over, people actually get hauled off by cops instead of shot on sight, thats a little something I would love to see in GTAO, GTAV has some npc events I would enjoy seeing online just to breathe a little more life into the game, obviously animals would offer much more as well, especially with talks of naval dlc. Large bodies of water separating some of the cities would be real good too, I know there would be quite a bit in San Fierro and that would offer up whale watching among other things, a place to station air craft carriers that isn't just out in the middle of the sea, we could actually have to decent uses for watercraft. Scavenger hunts like the one we recently had would be welcome, imagine looking for clams not just over what we currently know as "San Andreas" but all off the other cities that could be added. Some different biomes would be really cool too, dry desert plains, snow capped mountain peaks, snowy towns just below the cloud line, jungles, dense forests, tropical islands, if you have ever played Just Cause 2, especially with the online mod, you know how diverse that world is and how f*cking massive it feels compared to GTAV, imagine new activities like skiing, snowboarding on a mountain several hundred miles away, then hopping into your luxury chopper that flies you to your private jet so you can get to Venice to skateboard at sunset, travel times in Just Cause feel like forever even in fast jet craft and I love that feeling of a very large world and would really love seeing it done by Rockstar. With the talk of aliens, obviously they are already in the game and they are involved in Zancudo, we could re-introduce area 51 in LV and get into some real intergalactic sh*t there.

If they did add LC, I doubt they'd just plop it in the ocean to the East. We'd probably have to take the plane there.

The interesting part of a gradually expanding map is how would they fill in the space between San Andreas, VC, and LC. Of course big cities like Chicago and Detroit would have to take up a lot of space but what about all those smaller but interesting cities/states. Colorado would be fun and parts of Texas too. I was in Amarillo 20 years ago and that place was a real sh*t show: poor white people and poor black people separated by a highway and a lot of animosity.

Watch the tourism video, you can count on one hand the amount of people who look like they're having fun...no offense to anyone from Amarillo.
