Who's your favorite director?

Recommended Posts

JaberDoe

- David Fincher (Zodiac, Se7en, Fight Club)

He's so calculated, specific and in complete control.

- Dennis Villeneuve (BR 2049, Prisoners)

Same as Fincher in many ways. I feel like he knows exactly what he is doing.

- Roman Polanski (The Pianist)

I've just seen The Pianist, but my goodness! His work is incredible.

- Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman)

Just look at his work on Birdman and The Revenant. Dude's crazy.

- Sydney Lumet (12 Angry Men)

Dog Day Afternoon and 12 Angry Men are both excellent in terms of directing.

- Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad, The Last Jedi)

After watching The Last Jedi, and hearing stories about his methods, dude sounds awesome. Plus, his camera angles are oh-so satisfying.

- Christopher Nolan? (Dunkirk)

Solely based on his work on Dunkirk, this guy checked everything on my list in terms of direction. Can't say the same about his other work.

Mister Pinkerton

- Dennis Villeneuve (BR 2049, Prisoners)

Same as Fincher in many ways. I feel like he knows exactly what he is doing.

This is one guy I forgot to add to my list. Prisoners, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 were great. I watched some interviews with him and it just made me appreciate him more. He really understood Blade Runner and it's world and that mystery is fundamental to Blade Runner and perhaps a good sci-fi in general.

Villeneuve is great for the same reason Nolan is great - what he makes might not be kinography or whatever but he can make a movie that has both mainstream, layman appeal with enough depth beneath the surface to satisfy a viewer with more developed tastes. I'd put George Miller in that club, too.

My favorite movie director is Brian De Palma

MV5BZjI1NzM4Y2UtYjIyYi00YjM3LTkwYWEtM2Qy

the genius who brought us classics like Scarface, Carlito's way and Mission Impossible as well as some underrated movies like Snake Eyes and Body Double.

I always enjoyed his camera work and belief that the more you cut a movie the more you remind an audience that they are watching one taking them out of the experience.

His use of music in movies like Phantom of the Paradise and Scarface is nothing short of brilliant.

De Palma's movies are filled with larger than life characters who have become iconic such as Tony Montana from Scarface and David Kleinfeld from Carlito's Way and are overall just a joy to watch.

1. Quentin Tarantino(Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill 1-2, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight)

Brilliant taste for music and incredible dialogues and set pieces. Brilliant. Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie of all time and it's the only movie that I NEVER look at the timeline to see how much is left till the end.

2. Martin Scorsese(Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, Taxi Driver, Gangs of NY, The Aviator)

3. Christopher Nolan(Inception, Memento, Interstellar, The Dark Knight)

Honourable Mentions:Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, Frank Darabont, Brian De Palma, David Fincher.

Very hard to pick one, seen so many excellent names listed too I agree with. I'll add two I don't think I saw listed...

Robert Rodriguez and Tim Van Patten. Van Patten for his HBO work, and do love Rodriguez' penchant for the grindhouse cinema too. Sleazy and violent, yeah!

Love me some Scorsese, Tarantino, Coen Bros. Love Spielberg, Cameron and Ridley Scott etc. Craven and Romero are horror legends, Leone, de Palma, crikey I gotta stop. Do like my flicks.

TL:DR... Too many. :)

Since most people mentioned more than one director here is a list of my other favorites after my all time favorite director Brian De Palma.

John Mctiernan -How can you go wrong with the guy who directed Die Hard, Predator and The hunt for the Red October? My favorite action movie director ever.

Stanley Kubrick- Full Metal Jacket, Paths of Glory, The Shining, Dr.Strangelove...Nuff said.

Both Tony and Ridley Scott- I like Tony's more fun popcorn movies like Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop 2 as well as his brothers more serious movies like Gladiator and Alien.

James Cameron-the director who helped make the man who inspired my username on this forum famous :DNeedless to say his work holds a special place in my heart.

John Carpenter- I've seen his entire filmography but honestly lost count how many times I've watched The Thing and They Live.

Do quite enjoy Paul Verhoven too, Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Basic Instint, and, Showgirls is a guilty pleasure too. But that had Jessie from Saved By the Bell getting all kinds of naked, cheeky cheeky.

Man I fancied her so much as a kid on that TV show!

Verhoven gave me a life long appreciation for Michael Ironside. He was used brilliantly in Total Recall is a memorable henchman who will never make it to that party (Best Arnie movie IMO) and StarShip Troopers as the tough but fair Rasczak.

@Arnold Stallone. Oh yeah, great character in both indeed. Very memorable roles for me.

I grew up on the movies of Arnie and Sly, and still they can knock out a good flick too. Caught Killing Gunther just yesterday and found Arnie to be a real treat, made me laugh a lot. (Though no epic like those 80's/90's movies). Escape Plan was great fun. (Sequel not so much, lol).

Stallone as a film maker too, very much enjoy his stuff too. Rocky is always reliable fun, but the 4th Rambo movie was awesome. Love The Expendables too. Great set pieces.

Can't knock your love of Total Recall at all, but for me, Terminator 2 was just such a cool and impressionable movie for me as a lil' one. Looking forward to what Cameron and Linda Hamilton can bring to the new Terminator, though it'll never be as good as either T2 or Total Recall. Epic stuff indeed.

All very good movies. I'm also a big fan of True Romance because it worked as a cool Taxi Driver/Scarface tribute and had a great Mexican standoff at the end.
