Mister Pink
The Academy Award nominations have been released. Discuss! My hopes are: Best Picture: Three Billboards..' Best Actress: Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) Adapted Screenplay: Molly's Game Original Screenplay: Three Billboards..' Cinematography: Blade Runner 2049 Film Editing: I, Tonya (but will probably go to Baby Driver which I think is the most overrated film since Avatar) Best Director: Jordan Peele (Get Out) Admittedly, I haven't seen all films in all categories I mentioned but have seen usually 2 or more to have a somewhat of an opinion or at least a hope that they win. Raavi
Seen Get Out, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Wanna catch Lady Bird next. Might try The Shape of Water after that. So far though, I'm going to have to agree with this My hopes are: Best Picture: Three Billboards..' Three Billboards really was a breath of fresh air. Woody Harrelson's character especially. Uncle Sikee Atric
I think it's very interesting that Netflix got several nominations with Mudbound. I have watched it and it's a great film, but to actually get the nod suggests at the changing times. This could be a watermark point, especially if it picks up an award. Also, kudos to The Silent Child for it's nomination in Best Live Action Short Film, it deserves that title. Mister Pink
Is this The Guy?
Think there’s only like 2or 3 movies from this entire list that I actually seen (Beauty and the beast being one of them lol) Although I do really want to see Dunkirk and darkest hour, I love ww2 stuff. I haven’t seen any of the movies in the main lists but am hoping that Gary Oldman finally gets one. Am I the only one surprised Franco didn’t get nominated? Kiffster
Never watched the oscars or any award shows, but yikes, Dunkirk has quite a few nominations. Terrible movie and the only one of the big names I've seen. I bet Lady Bird will be the big winner though just because I think this year this circus will be all about women Mister Pink

El Dildo
Why do I even care about these awards anymore? that's what I've been asking for years. doesn't matter what kind it is. awards shows are literally the worst. Kiffster
If there's one movie that's been completely shunned, it's It. Totally deserves a few awards, especially for Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise. Femme Fatale and Tchuck
Leftist Bastard
Even if you don't like the way the Academy conducts their business these awards genuinely do matter in the industry and they impact the kind of films you see in theaters. El Dildo
these awards genuinely do matter in the industry and they impact the kind of films you see in theaters. which "industry" is that? because film making has moved beyond Hollywood, California. it's much larger than that. your statement was still true maybe 35 years ago, but now the awards only "matter" to aging hippies in LA, the bloodsuckers who worship their fame, and bored Midwestern housewives. you know; the kind of people who actually buy and read People magazine. the Academy doesn't recognize the best. it recognizes successful trends in Western pop culture. the same can be said of virtually all major awards shows in general. Grammy. Emmy. etc etc. if it matters to you then enjoy it. but let's not pretend that it isn't arrogant, shallow, and phony. doesn't mean it can't be entertaining... Jimmy
I think Margot Robbie deserves the Best Actress Award for I, Tonya. Frances McDormand isn't as good as her. Tonya was a critical success. Three Billboards will definitely win the Best Picture. Also, Woody Harrelson will hopefully bag the Best Actor award. Coco was great. Definitely one of the best I've watched in a while. Definitely rooting for these. Mister Pink

It is a terrible war movie with no atmosphere. It is almost razzie quality in my eyes! The Longest Day made a better war film in 1962! I love Frances McDormand but I just think Robbie deserve's it more. Also, I think the best acting in Three Billboards..' was from Sam Rockwell. I think he stole the show. @Raavi: Totally agree. Really a breath of fresh air. Really original film. With regards to Dunkirk, while I found the experience enjoyable mostly because I love films, I didn't find it particularly special. Also, Lady Bird might win something. I enjoyed that film and I couldn't really fault it however I would have no drive to see it again. It's technically great. Believable characters and interpersonal relationships, very realistic depiction of coming of age etc but not the type of thrilling experience to make you re-watch it. Three Billboards and Blade Runner will definitely films that will carry some re-watchability. 🆆🅰🅽🅽🅰 🅶🅴🆃 🅱🅰🅲🅺 🆈🅾🆄🆁 🅻🅾🆅🅴
Creed Bratton
Dunkirk felt more like some kind of tech demo than a real movie. Enjoyable, yes. But I wouldn't go further than that. No love for Blade Runner 2049, no love for Logan, no love for Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. I say, if Gary Oldman doesn't win this year we march on the Academy with dildos. Dbzk1999
No love for Logan? The fact that its getting nominated for an award other than visuals/costume design/whatever is already love for it imo. You don't like the Oscars, that's cool. But you cannot deny their importance to how well a movie performs and it's long lasting relevancy. Studios, directors and producers cater to those functions through Oscar bait for a reason. Mind you this isn't a bad thing - Oscar bait can be good. Shawshank Redemption is Oscar bait and it is one of the greatest movies ever made. Birdman, The Revenant, Lincoln, La La Land - these are all movies you could describe as Oscar bait and they are all fantastic. So yes, the Oscars do impact what you see getting made and put into theaters regardless of your opinion on the ceremony and academy itself. As for Hollywood celebrating most popular vs best, if that was the case there'd be a lot more nominations for Wonder Woman and Logan and other CBM movies. What is ''best'' is inherently subjective to begin with; most of the dislike for awards functions tends to be ''they don't like the thing that I do'' which is understandable, no point in caring for an award ceremony that doesn't cater to your taste - but there is no objective equation here. If Dunkirk wins best picture and/or director it is absolutely earned It shouldn't win a thing. It is a terrible war movie with no atmosphere. It is almost razzie quality in my eyes! The Longest Day made a better war film in 1962! Atmosphere is why that movie is so good. It is easily the most unique war film since Thin Red Line. No love for Logan? The fact that its getting nominated for an award other than visuals/costume design/whatever is already love for it imo. Thats only the second CBM to have done that since dark knight This. People pretending that Logan got shafted are beyond silly. There is no chance it was ever going to get a best picture nomination, an argument could be made for Jackman getting a Best Performance nomination instead of Denzel Washington but Patrick Stewart was just not going to cut it with the competition in Best Supporting Actor category. I'm glad Logan was the one to get a nomination and not Wonder Woman. rtie

Dunkirk was a wonderful story that understood a basic but arguably the most important rule of storytelling: show, don't tell. That's not what I would call a story. But to each their own. Lots of people see it as a masterpiece, but I honestly don't get it. A war movie with loads of motion- and emotionless soldiers just standing around doing absolutely nothing but look around and duck and repetitive scenarios from start to finish. Even visually it was nothing special. Absolute snoozefest, but then again I feel the same about every Chistopher Nolan movie. Don't get why he's such a highly praised director. He's one of the worst if you ask me.

Craigsters
Blade Runner 2049 should have been nominated for best picture. There was little or no dialog in Blade Runner 2049, the group AMPAS makes the decision's on what to nominate and pictures with lots of conversation and stupid dialog usually win like La La Land which I'll never watch, and is in my steel magnolias and The Twilight Saga franchise of crap to never watch list!.. rtie
Amount of dialogue doesn't factor as a prerequisite for what's eligible to be nominated. Hence 2011's best picture winner, The Artist. A silent movie.
