TITANS_ROBIN-First-Look-Final-720x480.jp

Making a topic about the upcoming Titans show set for DC's streaming service later this year. It's confirmed to be a separate entity from the Arrowverse shows, which is why I think it warrants its own topic and shouldn't be bunched in with the other one.

I think this could be very interesting, because it might be the start of a new universe. Will it be called the "Titanverse"? If so, I will have said it first. Characters so far based on confirmations and casting breakdowns include:

  1. Robin
  2. Starfire
  3. Raven
  4. Beast Boy
  5. Hawk & Dove
  6. Arsenal
  7. Elasti-Girl
  8. Donna Troy
  9. Batman
  10. Det. Amy Rohrbach
  11. Arella
  12. Acolyte
  13. Brother Blood
  14. Trigon

Since the series is its own universe on DC's private streaming service made with a much closer connection to DC, I believe the series will benefit from not having to fit to the CW's "standards". I'm just glad we're getting a darker and more action-oriented Titans show, because I am sick to death of Teen Titans GO!.

Anyone else excited?

I'm excited for it since it's on DC's new streaming service and not on the CW I expect it to be a bit different than the Arrowverse shows I hope they at least have a bigger budget. I've also wanted to see a live action Titans show after watching the old teen titans cartoon as a kid in the 2000s.

I hope it's as good as the original animated series. Go! is absolute dog sh*t. The promotional material for this does look promising, I will say that much. Robin looks great.

Probably I read somewhere that they're casting someone to play a young Bruce Wayne and a younger Dick Grayson for flashbacks.

At this point I don't really care. I just want a live action Titans show.

Some details from Splash Report.

https://splashreport.com/exclusive-titans-story-details-are-here/

Quote

“It’s about time we had another excellent superhero television show. It seems, in recent years, that the quality promised to us by the early seasons of DAREDEVIL, THE FLASH, ARROW, and even JESSICA JONES has been forgotten amongst the need to pump out a season every year. While we have a top-notch television in LEGION, we need higher standards across the board to honestly justify the amount of content that is being produced annually. From IRON FIST to SUPERGIRL, the small-screen superhero has been neglected to an almost laughably terrible level. So when a project comes along that stands out from the crowd, it deserves the praise. Here’s the inside scoop on TITANS (Episode One).

The Teen Titans are one of the most popular superhero groups in pop culture. The early 2000s cartoon of the same name garnered strong social and critical acclaim, lasting five seasons before relaunching under TEEN TITANS GO! (a show geared more towards children). The yearning for another season of the original cartoon is still strong amongst fans today, proving there’s an enduring desire for the return of the titular superhero group. And while TITANS aren’t similar to the original TEEN TITANS cartoon in any significant way, I’m sure it’s going to satisfy a hungry audience more than.

The pilot of TITANS is centered on three heroes, Robin, Raven, and Starfire (Brenton Thwaites, Teegan Croft, Anna Diop), but it begins with a flashback. The Flying Grayson Circus. This flashback is used as both a primer to the backstory of Dick Grayson (Robin) and an introduction to Rachel Roth (Raven). It does a respectable job at making the audience understand Robin’s character, akin to that of Bruce Wayne in the Batman films. It also gives a robust taste of what’s to come with Raven, highlighting her unstable psyche and untapped power. However, the rest of the pilot is structured very much around the individual heroes. Each first Act begins with a chyron separating the protagonists from each other. In this sense, it could be considered similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where each hero is given an introductory film to get the audience invested and are then brought together in an ensemble movie.

Before we get into the individual character breakdowns for the first episode, I think it’s important to discuss the tone of the show. TITANS is very much not a series for children. There are multiple f-bombs and s-bombs, among other swear-words that make it seem like they’re going for an R-rating. Moreover, the action is brutal, with bone snaps, people being shot, burned, and mangled. It’s a departure from the more joyful tone that many associates with the group, but it’s a departure that I feel is for the best. It’s refreshing to see a DC show that’s no-holds-barred instead of shying away from the more mature aspects of the mythology. It’s not as adult as something like JESSICA JONES, but it’s far darker than anything DC has put out on the small screen thus far. What separates TITANS from some of Marvel’s darker shows is the fact that it doesn’t ever really aim to be realistic. TITANS doesn’t shy away from the big, fantastical spectacle, and instead embraces the comic roots of the characters. We can have a realistic Robin fight scene, but we can also have Starfire blasting away goons with a burst of fire. It’s a mixture of realism and fantasy that I think works great.

ROBIN is the first character we are introduced to. At this stage in his life, decades after the Flying Grayson Incident, Dick Grayson is in a terrible place. It’s not the Robin many of you are accustomed to. He doesn’t work with Batman anymore after growing to hate him and leaving Gotham for San Francisco. He’ll sometimes see a shadow of Batman, only to turn around and realize it’s his own. He’s afraid of becoming like Bruce. Nevertheless, he still wears the Robin suit instead of a Nightwing costume (which would make much more sense). In this iteration of the character, Grayson has taken up the career of being a Detective on the police force. We are introduced to some of the series’ side characters like Detective Rohrbach and Wolf, and we also notice Grayson’s plain apathy towards them. See, Robin doesn’t work with people anymore. After what Batman did to him, he’s shut himself off from any relationships, absorbing himself in his work. It’s an exciting choice for the character, and his development throughout the season will be one of its central pillars. We also get a glimpse into the action of the show, which looks to be phenomenal.

From there, we are taken to the next chyron— RAVEN. Here we get a more extensive look into the character of Rachel Roth than in the cold open. We get to see more of her mother, Angela, an insomniac trying to manage taking care of a problematic childlike Raven. It’s been difficult. Raven’s powers are also given some spotlight early on, highlighting a deeply disturbed, almost demonic individual residing inside her. Rachel’s neighbors are well-aware of her strangeness, as are her classmates, who regularly bully her. It’s clear that Raven’s relationships at school are going to be a big part of her story moving forward. It is also within this Act that we are introduced to one of the main antagonists of the story, The Acolyte: a mysterious hitman whose intentions and superiors are unclear, but hint at a more extensive narrative at play. Without spoilers, let’s say that the Acolyte prompts some change within Rachel’s life that launch the entire show into motion.

Before we get the next chyron, we are given some more story developments with Robin and Raven. And then, the next act— STARFIRE. She is probably the most intriguing character in the pilot episode, introduced in an enthrallingly enigmatic fashion. When we first meet her, Starfire is in smack in the middle of a car crash, her driver is embedded in the bloodied windshield, and armed men are chasing her for a reason unknown to us. Also, I think this is a good time to mention her outfit and appearance, as the recent set photos have caused some controversy amongst fans. Starfire is introduced to us the night after a DISCO PARTY. The reason she looks like someone out of a 1970s club is that she was at one. Her dress and hairstyle aren’t part of her usual look. So, everyone needs to relax a bit and wait for the official image. Okay… back to the story. On the escape, Starfire finds out she has multiple passports and can speak multiple languages— the identity of this woman is an absolute mystery. Some more events transpire (which I won’t divulge into for spoiler’s sake), and she is propelled on a mission that will sow the seeds for TITANS.We are chronologically reaching the end of the pilot, so the following will be very vague to avoid ruining some of the best moments of the episode. Towards the end, the culmination of the previous 50 minutes takes a head. There’s spectacle, violence, and mystery that acts as both a satisfying finish for the episode and a definite beginning for the rest of the show. The absolute greatest, the most jaw-dropping moment of the pilot happens here, and it’s so good. But you’ll have to see the episode yourself to find out what it is…

Overall, the pilot of TITANS is an excellent introduction to the series. We get an overview of the show’s central characters, the darker tone, some of the action, and a taste and the grander narrative at play. For those disenfranchised with DC’s latest TV shows, or even cheesy superhero shows in general, be on the lookout for this one.”

Take this with a grain of salt, I suppose. But what do you guys think of the prospect that Titans is going to be a mature series that's not for kids in the slightest, and closer in tone to the Netflix MCU than the movies? I know the comics, especially in the '80s, were a lot darker than the 2003 animated series, so I see where it's coming from. Just hope it's not done for the sake of being edgy, in this case.

DC hasn't yet publicly denied this, and the screenshots of Robin do look dark. I guess being on streaming means they're taking full advantage of it.

My only complaint is that they are filming it in Toronto but the show after reading that seems to take place in San Francisco. I know that in the comics they have been in San Francisco but how are they going to make Toronto look like San Francisco? Couldn't they have just chosen Bludhaven or some other place?

It looks a hell of a lot darker than I was expecting. I was expecting something more like CW-Tier, but then Robin out of nowhere literally says "f*ck Batman" and blows my mind. I'll give it a try if the streaming service is at a reasonable price.

https://deadline.com/2018/08/doom-patrol-joivan-wade-star-cyborg-dc-universe-live-action-series-1202443213/

Jovian Wade will be Cyborg in Doom patrol. DC/WB is weird they don't allow two versions of the same character to exist in the Arrowverse and movies at the same time aside from The Flash and a couple of others that I'm forgetting and now we have two cyborgs.

If we can have two cyborgs coexist why can't we have two Deathstrokes coexist or two Amanda Wallers?

Because either Warner Bros/DC think the general public are incredibly stupid, or they themselves are incredibly stupid. I'm leaning towards the latter.

Your thoughts on the final? I'm assuming you've watched it through by now.

I wouldn't say all the DCU shows, no, but I'd say yes to Doom Patrol and Titans cause they're set in the same universe, whereas (for the moment anyway) Arrow, Flash, Supergirl etc are set in a different universe. I don't quite imagine Titans and Doom Patrol to crossover with the CW shows anytime soon.

Finally got around to finishing Titans.

My God what a show. Whoever created the trailers for it should be fired. If you were turned off by the trailers the show is much much better than them.

I loved the cinematography, It's shot like a film and looks very cinematic. It's a bit more darker than the Arrowverse and the old titans show though I kinda prefered how the old show handled stuff. It has less of that annoying unncessary drama and filler some of it is there but not a lot. I wish the arrowverse were more like Titans. The fight scenes could use a bit more work though.

Small nitpicks Dick's a detective but he never shows up for work. I wish they used more DC locations instead of real places. I didn't really like the opening titles. I wish Beastboy could change into more animals, We needed Cyborg. I didn't really like to see Dick Killing I like to think that he badly hurt them.

I didn't really like the finale. I knew he was hallucinating but it felt pretty weak.

All the teases at Batman on this show really makes me want a Batman show on DC Universe. Unfortunately that will probably never happen because of WB/DC and  whoever but a guy can dream.

The final was weak for me only because we were promised Nightwing, and didn't get him. Apparently there were initially supposed to have been 12 episodes, which were reduced to 11, and the whole Nightwing arc will take place during Season 2 - as will Cyborg apparently (once he's done on the Doom Patrol show). I suspect Beast Boy will eventually manage to change into more animals; bare in mind that he's only just starting out. Everyone involved here is learning more about themselves, so it'll take time for powers to develop.

Are you talking about when Titans was in development for TNT? I never heard anyone promise anything. It is obvious that's where we're going. I was a little let down too, but mostly because it was poised as a cliffhanger but really feels more like a prolonged resolution to a story arc so close to ending.

But overall, I LOVED this show. I'm a long time DC fan, comics more than anything else. This show feels like everything the Wolfman and Perez run was in it's time. Mature.

I know alot of people like to dismiss it as dark and edgy for edginess sake, but for me it's far more in line with the comics. I think a lot of internet personalities, for example, dont really understand that comics are more dramatic than the cartoons based on them. So when Superman kills Zod or Robin says a bad word, they throw their arms up and day "this isnt what the comics are like!!" when they really mean "this isnt like the cartoon I watched!!". But they are, they have been since at least the late seventies. (Superman: the movie is not what the comics were at that time) Then they say "they're supposed to be heroes and symbols of virtue!!" That isn't how virtue works, virtues are tools to guide moral judgment. It's never the same because circumstances arent universal. No killing is a good rule, never kill anyone under any circumstances ever is a sh*te rule (sorry Batman). But a man of good virtue will know when to burn down an Asylum full of capable Satanists, for example. He might also search it first, but you know how scriptwriting works.

Beast boy- "I searched the place, no one else"

Dick-"burn it down"

Would that have made it a better show? Nope.

Minka. f*cking. Kelly....my god. Just...so god damn beautiful.

Donna Troy was perfect. Charming, strong, smart, independent

Beast Boy was damn near perfect, I'm sure he'll turn into other animals eventually.

Raven..Teagan Croft needs a bit more work on her craft, but it works for me.

Starfire grew on me, still hating that hair though. She looked so much better in the finale. Its definitely different, but she holds alot of the original version too. Like resolving her anger with violence and being quick to...show physical affection😜

That Hawk and Dove origin was a great freaking episode.

They made The Atomic Family intimidating!?!? So well played.

..and of course, all this Robin goodness. They've kept the character out of action for so long, but then we get 2!? In some of their most character defining moments?! Take my money DCU

That post-credits scene, are you kidding me with this awesomeness?

Also, Swamp Thing is coming soon to DCU!!

No, I'm talking about this show. I believe (I'll have to find the reference) that it was intended for us to be introduced to the Nightwing alias by the end of this season.

As awesome indeed as that was, I can't help but think that maybe, just maybe, they're jumping the gun here. They haven't really established the core group of Titans yet; there's no Cyborg, there's no Kid Flash, and already they're throwing in a Kryptonian arc?
