How to handle the map’s boundaries?

All open world games have their boundaries. Some games have invisible walls to prevent players from venturing out of the map. Some games will trigger a countdown when you've gone to far (warning you to turn back). Failing to turn back would result in the game killing you or respawning you back in the playable area.

Red Dead Redemption 2 should use the Wild West lore to their advantage. Instead of invisible walls or countdowns, Rockstar should use what we often see in Wild West movies, stories, books, etc. Anyone who ventures into unsettled territory/hostile country in asking for trouble. Id love to see native Americans start attacking me from all directions until I die or return to the playable area (leaving their lands) lol. It would be a this is my land type of attack.

This would be fun and innovative for map boundaries in open world games. The invisible walls, countdowns to death, etc is a thing of the past, and map boundaries should be part of the gameplay in todays games. Rockstar could still use the old school countdown to death with an innovative way too. When we venture out of the playable area, the game could slowly starting playing war drum music letting us know we are venturing into native land. If we fail to return to the playable area, wed be struck in the head by a tomahawk or Native American arrow lol. That would be awesome 😎

I think they will just probably surround the whole landscape with mountains that you can't go through, is the standard for sand box games like this...

YES, that is the standard but it is sooo boring, and you can see in the leaked map that this is not the case. Why not innovate on map boundaries? If anyone can do it its Rockstar😎. Also If youve played Redemption1, youd know that their were invisible walls which hurt the experience. Players also found numerous ways to navigate past these landscapes you speak of that were designed to contain players in the map (which resulted in rediculous invisibility glitches)

Making an innovative gameplay change to map boundaries would be a step in the right direction for modern day open world games. The standard method you speak of is a thing of the past. Rockstar games are the leaders in open world games and a simple innovative map boundary like this would amazing.

It would be cool if their were tall mountains bordering the area but it won't restrict you to go on them it would just be a challenge to get on and the snowy mountains they would just keep going and these mountains would most likely kill you due to the dangerous landscape, it would look similar to the snowy mountains in steep and kind of act like the water in gtaV how it would just keep going until your boat or plane died but instead your horse will die due too cold temperatures or you will die for the same reason.

That would be pretty cool too. The problem is though, every one of those vista mountains would most likely be identical and repetitive looking. The water in GTA works because its the same thing over and over (its water). Terrain requires more variety in appearance, otherwise it would be obvious.

It will most likely work similar to Redemption. impassable mountains and a large lake/sea, or a violent river current that drag Arthur to death if he is able to swim. I don't see a reason to change something that worked perfectly before.

I wouldnt say it worked perfectly. There were and still are numerous ways to exit the map in Redemption1 allowing players to explore areas with little to no textures. Having additional measure to prevent exploitation in these areas would be a plus.

Once you reach a boundary you enter a cutscene where you either get shot, mauled by wolf/cougar/bear or miscellaneous like falling to your death, freezing to death, starving.
