So, remember LittleBigPlanet? Well, the guys who made that are creating a new game called Dreams, which is essentially the same create-a-game formula, but now truly moving on to being able to craft your own characters, levels and even create your own music. It's hard to explain precisely how different it is from what came before, so here's a video basically explaining a lot about it:

How do you think it looks? What would you like to create in this game?

I couldn't get into LBP3 back when it was a free PS+ title so I'll hold my horses since this gerne isn't my type of thing, but there's something very catchy about this game. I'll keep it on my watch.

Feel like this game would suit early access or a soft launch. It seems like it's going to be heavily driven by the player community and the issue with that is it's gonna be devoid of player creations on day one. That said, I'm definitely curious to see the types of stuff people can come up with, some really impressive stuff has come out of games like this in the past.

Well the Little Big Planet games had an actual campaign created by the devs so there was stuff to do right on launch. Edit: They actually talk about the campaign in the video too, I didn't watch it before I made this comment.

Anyway I really loved the first two LBP games when I was younger. I don't think I have the time or enthusiasm to create as many custom levels anymore as I did back then, but I do wanna give this a shot. The VR implementation looks pretty neat, I really wish it would come to the Vive on PC, but I highly doubt it since Sony likes to keep their games as PS exclusives.

For me, the real test will be if the game can provide easy and quick templates for both level design and wider game design. For all the possibilities LittleBigPlanet offered, to actually create a single level of any quality required hours and hours and hours of work. Which, when you have a job and other commitments, is not always a good use of your time.

For instance, I'd love to create a fighting game, but imagine having to animate every single move the character makes, and then figure out a way to create a character-select screen and health bars. Who would do that? Who among us would even have the time? Templates and ease of use will make or break this game.

Sorry for the bump, but with E3 approaching, journalists have been allowed to give Dreams a play. Here is a video of the gameplay:

And here is an article with some new screenshots:

What do you think? Will this be something you buy? I'll have to reserve judgement, because LittleBigPlanet was often so disappointing. But this looks vastly superior so far.

Sorry for the bump, but as time has moved on, we've gotten more information on this game, and seen more examples of what people will be able to create in it. So here is a video of snippets of games that have been made using this engine, apparently everything from mech-based combat, to space dogfights to 2D platformers:
