Sure, it's one of the greatest cars in the game, but is this thread also one of the greatest, if not THE greatest appreciation thread of them all, from the photographic standpoint? Gotta give credit for the timeless hot rod design too, it looks "right" in any setting, whether it's the metropolitan concrete jungle, or some scrapyard in the desert.

Imagine, if you will, something so fearsome it’d leave even the most esteemed muscle cars shaking in their boots. Something so American it would put Uncle Sam to shame. Something that’ll put more hair on your chest than a 50-gallon drum of Bull Shark Testosterone. And once you’re done, remember this: no matter what you’ve conjured up in your mind, the Vapid Hustler would chew it up and spit it out faster than you can say “fast.”

Track day:

fJIlMM3.jpg

Forged in the fires of the Great Depression, the Hustler has lived many lives; running moonshine, dodging authorities and wreaking havoc on the drag strip. Since then, you, your daddy and your granddaddy have seen it everywhere ranging from postcards to model kits to car shows. Many cars have achieved legendary status, but it’s arguable that none have achieved it in the capacity of the Hustler. It’s far beyond the point of simply being famous—the Hustler is a piece of Americana.

Vacation:

6DMnuiH.jpg

Not long ago, even I found it difficult to believe that anything could rightfully earn a reputation of such mythical proportions, but my research has since convinced me otherwise. Few industries felt the impact of the Great Depression in the way the automobile industry did. While cars were no longer viewed as luxury items, the industry was still in its infancy and was scrambling to find faster, more cost-effective ways to produce products, ultimately making them more affordable and easier to sell. This task under normal circumstances would prove to be grueling, but in a time of economic turmoil, it was almost certain to carry the auto industry to an early grave.

Snake Eyes:

ImgNcOj.jpg

After several consecutive miscalculations and blunders during the Depression, the Vapid Motor Company reached a tipping point; it would have to wager its fate on one last revolutionary idea. Enter: the Vapid V8. While it was far from the first V8, it was the first time the engine block was cast as one single piece. This allowed the engines to be produced quickly and assembled easily. Previous Vapid models were outfitted with four-cylinder engines that made far less impressive numbers, and if there’s anything that remains constant in the American marketplace, it’s that big numbers and buzz words can sell a product. Vapid also chose to forge the Hustler’s body out of steel—a massive improvement over the traditional wooden frames other vehicles used at the time. Vapid meticulously crafted their vehicle in a way that allowed it to be modified with ease, with fenders easily removed and an incredibly simple engine compared to its modern successors. It would go on to be one of the best selling vehicles of the 30’s before cementing itself as a fundamental part of American iconography.

Chug chug chug:

8vJFf6g.jpg

However, while the Hustler’s story is indeed one of success and triumph, a dark shadow looms in its wake. It’s impossible to address the vehicle without addressing an unfortunate reality: the Hustler exudes boomer energy. “Let me explain to you for the 432nd time why pushrod engines are actually better than overhead—“ Shut up. Shut up shut up shut up. Yes, you told us about how you spent your grandkids’ college tuition fund on this because college was cheap back in your day. Yes, you explained how a combustion engine works the last three times we met. No, I don’t want to buy any of your other cars from you. The Hustler perfectly encapsulates car culture as a whole, but the unfortunate reality is that it exists within a microcosm which carries with it the weight of everyone who decided to own a Hustler out of a sense of superiority or a need for validation. Go to a car meet and I promise that you couldn’t swing a dead cat in any direction without hitting at least one man wearing cutoff jean-shorts and a tank top that used to be white, but has since been pigmented by stains of a questionable source. He lets out an obnoxious grunt when he kneels down to examine his machine, and sighs “They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Lemme’ show you somethin’” if you look at his car for too long or dare make eye contact. Everyone who owns a Hustler is an expert.

A shared interest:

aL213gN.jpg

The culture this car has fostered isn’t inherently bad by any means. Hustler owners are proud people—and rightfully so. They typically lean on the older side, and most tend to be old men fulfilling lifelong dreams of building cars they used to see on posters and in movies, or of bringing life back to an old car passed on to them by their father. It’s a relic of a bygone era, yet it never really went out of style. Pull your underwear over your head before you sit behind the wheel and you’ll probably still look a hell of a lot cooler. Owning a Hustler is liberating, and it’s not hard to see why. You can do whatever you want with it, and frankly, that’s precisely how Vapid intended it to be. I’d give you the sob story behind the two that I own, but frankly, I’d rather you just go out and buy one of the things already so I'll make this quick.

It wasn't even fair:

EKNpd6q.jpg

I’m not one to buy into tired cliches like the American dream, but I do believe it’s the only thing that can explain a cultural anomaly of the Hustler’s caliber. It’s a car that can walk any path; tear off the fenders and slap on a supercharger. You’ve got a dragster. Tack on some new wheels, tune the engine and you’ve got a restomod. Search the ends of the earth for OEM parts and build yourself a true-to-life replica of a unit that would’ve rolled off the lot nearly a century ago. Whether you’re a retiree or a young man, using a hot rod is every bit as valid as using a canvas or an instrument to express yourself. Shake your fist at the man—be loud! The Hustler’s never going to be too old to have fun. So if you get the chance to lay hands on one of these crusty old antiques, bring a wrench set with you. It just might make you feel young again.

Spoiler

@Scottiedog123 I've always taken that to be when that specific dealership opened. Like, "We've been selling Vapid products here since wartime, 1942"

It also kinda looks like a production facility... they built a lot of these during the war. Maybe later converted to a dealership.
