Overrated/Underrated GTA'S

Before anyone makes a comment, please read this; overrated does not always mean bad, in fact, an overrated game can be good

What do you consider to be the most overrated and underrated GTA games. For me it is as follows:

 

BY CRITICS:

• Overrated: GTA IV: Critics were too focused on the world and the story, so they forgot to mention things like the lack of vehicle variety and the annoyance of the friend system.
• Underrated: GTA Vice City Stories: I don't know why this one didn't get that much praise, it was a lot better than Liberty City Stories and is the best portable GTA yet.

BY GAMERS:

• Overrated: GTA San Andreas: While I consider it the second best GTA game, people just have to let it go and stop expecting every GTA to be the San Andreas HD.
• Underrated: GTA V: it speaks for it's self, the amount of hate this game gets on these forums is beyond ridiculous.

Overrated: It may be San Andreas, cause of it's crazy annoying fans. They should claim down. Even if they say something true about San Andreas, they should choose a good way to say it.

Underrated: I could say Vice City Stories. I guess if VCS and LCS weren't released as sonny exclusive, it would be more popular. I enjoyed it a lot actually.

 

@OP I don't think V is underrated. Only this forum has too much hate. The rest of the world thinks it's the one of the best games ever made. And that's why it broke too many records, and won many awards. This forum, is full of different people, fanboys, that have different expectations. And as you know, Rockstar can't satisfy everyone. But i see they wanted to make some balance in V. But people on this forum are long story.

Overrated: San Andreas. Lacks atmoshphere and is filled with half asses features everyone seems to cream their pants over like haircuts and bodybuilding.

 

Underrated: Vice City Stories. Yes, I love this game. Had the most detailed empire building system in the series so far, and bought back the good features from San Andreas (e.g. Gang wars) and incorporates them into the best 3D era city.

But it seems the hate for IV has been reduced considerably as of late, the funny thing is people suddenly started praising IV's driving system, friend activities, and the game itself in general.

 

Why? It's a cool mainstream thing to claim the previous game is better than the new one even though you originally hated it.

 

People will praise V when VI comes out in a few years or so. Mark it, sherlocks.

Overrated:IV. The game was still good but in no means a 10 out of10 or even game of the year. I still enjoyed it nut as a long time gta fan I personally didn't find it to be what the critics.were raving about. I didn't like the plot or niko. The I did like the supporting cast though. And didn't like the illusion of choices. If there is going to be choices.then I want them to be significant differences

 

Underrated: has to be vice city stories. I put many of hours into that game and is one of few gta's I 100%ed. I loved the empire system and sometimes still pull out the psp to enjoy it again and again. If it wasn't a sony exclusive the game.would.have.gotten more.recognition. but not sure how the critics gave betters reviews to LCS than VCS when its everything but more....

Overrated: GTA V. Doesn't deserve even half of the praise it's getting. If it wasn't for the great acting, this game would be absolute sh*t in comparison to the potential it had. 6/10 at best. Really... It's almost tied for most overrated with GTA SA in my book.

 

Underrated: GTA IV: The Lost & Damned. Although this is only a GTA IV expansion, I say that this game is one of Rockstar's best decisions. I loved the storyline, the new features it introduced, the concept, the atmosphere... The Lost & Damned needs much more recognition.

Overrated: San Andreas - Too many fans expecting every GTA to follow in it's footsteps, they simply don't realise that It's not going to happen

Underrated: LCS and VCS - Theses are truly great games but there are a lot of people who don't even seem to know they exist, shame really because had they released on PS2 originally, they would have been far more popular

 

Also, I dislike how much people seem to say GTA V is inadequate and a bad game - I really enjoyed it.

How can anyone say GTA IV and GTA V are underrated when they're two of the most critically acclaimed games in the series? If anything they're slightly overrated by critics.

 

Fans can sometimes be a bit unfair, but most criticisms are justified for both of them.

 

As for what I'd consider overrated? San Andreas without question. The way this game gets treated like it's the messiah of the series isn't just annoying it's borderline disgusting.

 

Sure it was fun for its time and I don't see anything wrong with someone liking it, but why can't some people swallow their pride and accept not everyone loves it like they do?

 

The worst thing is most of what's in the game isn't all that great, but it's constantly glossed over because of the "things to do".

 

To me it has some of the sh*ttest and objective nulling features in the series like the gym, eating, dancing, dating etc, but because it has a ton of repetitive side missions all is forgiven.

 

I know my GTA IV fanboyism isn't any better, but at least I can come to a point and accept the game is flawed in ways. San Andreas fanboys rarely realise their precious isn't perfect. Being in denial is too much of a compliment sadly.

 

As for underrated I think TLAD. Whenever it's compared to TBOGT it always gets the short end of the stick because it's not "crazy" enough or too serious.

 

Even without looking at the story it introduced some interesting concepts like being apart of a biker gang and interesting side missions like Stubbs' dirty laundry.

 

A much better game than it's been given credit for.

underrated : vcs, gta advance and tlad.

 

vcs : a great game and deserves much much better treatment then lcs had back in the days.

 

gta advance : a better prequel to gta iii then lcs. because lcs felt like it was not related to gta3 and more like a gta sa spinoff on a vc engine. those things are totally unrelated to gta3 and thats why it sucks so bad.

 

tlad : a real and serious story that needed its own game.

The forum is changed into a challenge of "Sh*tting to V". IV fanboys say it's unrealistic and they miss the boat-like driving, and SA fanboys say the map is still not pleasing. It's a nice game really.

As I said above I really don't see how it's underrated.

 

GTA V is a nice game, but in the eyes of many it's not what it was cracked up to be. It was the same with GTA IV (Still the best GTA however. Come at me bros).

 

I do think some people go a bit overboard with bashing GTA V, but generally it's mostly constructive criticism and gets rated accordingly.

Overrated: As much as I love San Andreas, it is by far the most overrated GTA mainly due to its fanbase. SA's fanbase is undeniably full of people who can't admit that San Andreas (just like any other game) isn't perfect. I fully understand people who regard SA as their favourite GTA, it's shame that fanboys make real SA fans, who admit that the game has its flaws, look bad.

 

Underrated: Definitely VCS. While it may not be graphically advanced, it contains a lots of unique features, such Empire Building system, which aren't present in any other GTAs and they all make this game unique. In many gameplay aspects it is similiar to SA; I believe if VCS was a bit more graphically advanced and available for all platforms, the game would be a lot more popular.

I think it being the first HD Gta earned it a lot of praise it didn't deserve. It was too narrow and focused for a sandbox game. The story was very repetitive, and too me the DLC's would have made a better story then IVs. It sacrificed too much for the sake of realism. There was a standard that Rockstar had made that I expected it too top and it never did, for me it needed to live up to what previous games had done even if it was one a much larger scale then the 3d era games, but didn't.

 

Underrated: Vice City

 

For the time it was made it was amazing. How everything was drawn together with the environment started a new era of GTA where the world started to feel real and that you could really immerse yourself in it. From the sound track to the way it depicted the fictional Miami it all was done very well. The story never really felt stale while letting you take over Vice City. It was fantastic but got overshadowed by SA that came out shortly after, leaving it underrated.

Overrated: Vice City. It was a great game that introduced a lot of cool new features. However, it was always terribly glitch riddled (more so than any other GTA game, for me at least) and I owned it for both the PC and PS2. I could never play that game on either system for longer than an hour and fifteen minutes before it would crash. Also, I REALLY disliked how large the eastern beach was. Yes, Vice City was larger than GTA III, but if you take that beach out I'd be willing to bet that it was actually smaller.

Underrated: Liberty City Stories. The way it flawlessly fit in with the story and setting of GTA III, giving greater character depth, explaining environmental developments. Plus, it did a lot of cool stuff for their first real venture onto handheld consoles (I'm not counting GTA Advance). Also, did anyone else on here use the LCS Trainer before it got locked out by an update? That was BY FAR the coolest mod I ever used on any GTA game, even cooler than Vice City Online.

Overrated: GTAO. Just because something's popular doesn't make it great.

 

Underrated: CTW and TLAD.

 

GTA IV doesn't really fit into the underrated category IMO, but for whatever reason it still seems to get blood pressures rising. None of the 3D era GTAs are underrated to me. They're too widespread loved to be "underrated".

Overrated - San Andreas, I respect the hell out of San Andreas as one of the most ambitious games of its gen but the godlike pedestal it's been put on is ridiculous & unbearably obnoxious.

GTA SA is way too overrated for its own good, too much circlejerking around its above average at best story and even more around CJ ruins what actual good this game has, which is plenty.

 

Now for an underrated GTA, I'd have to say most mobile versions, but especially Chinatown Wars. Although I've never played it, from what I saw and read about the game, it doesn't deserve the flack it gets at all.

Overrated: San Andreas and GTA V (along with GTA:O)

 

San Andreas was great for its time and it's a milestone for PS2, which was barely able to run it anyway, but the status of the best GTA ever some people plastered on the aforementioned game is a bit annoying. For me GTA: VCS was already better than SA, not to mention IV.

 

Same goes for GTA V especially its Online component, which are considered as the next best thing in the world since sliced cheese, but in all honestly it's bug ridden, boring game with rather annoying microtransactions system advertised by Rockstar as all you need and want. Apart from financial success the game achieved only one thing - killed new Rockstar games for years to come.

 

Underrated: VCS and CTW.

 

Both were great games - VCS being to the ultimate GTA game and CTW one of the best games for DS and very solid product with great gameplay mechanics, but both are unloved for very similar fact - limited publishing, either for one manufacturer consoles (VCS for PSP and PS2) or mobile platforms (CTW for DS, cellphones and PSP).
