GTA PS2 Modding Discussion

Im not sure if i am allowed to post this, but i thought posting this wouldn't hurt anybody since im not sharing ISO's or anything related.

So i ripped my ORIGINAL gta 3 DVD [PS2] and modified the ISO using apache 1.1 (since it works a bit better than apache 3) and replaced the carcols with the BETA taxi colour. (bumpers are also yellow) I also tried with the timecyc and works perfectly. The only problem appears when im trying to edit the HUD textures (and restore the beta yellow icons as featured in pre-release screenshots) the game freezes on a white loading screen and i haven't found any solution for that.

Did you replace the HUD.TXD with the PC one, or did you edit the TXD yourself?

It's safer if you edit the existing TXD. Use Magic.TXD http://gtaforums.com/topic/851436-relopensrc-magictxd/and save as III PS2 version and you should be good :)

Yeah i managed to edit the PS2 txd by myself.

Now the question is, even though rhetorically, what more can be changed? :p

Most of all... textures only.

Well, you can always play with timecyc.dat and change stuff... Even change models. You can change props, cars or characters. You just need to convert the dffs with The Heros RW Converter http://gtaforums.com/topic/752450-rel-renderware-file-converter/ Edited by guard3

Thank you. I did some more testing an i tried to replace the timecyc with a custom one. Thing is, the other islands can't be seen from portland or vice-versa.

Though someone on youtube succesfully replaced the timecyc with the same program (Apache) and he hasn't got any problems. Any ideas why would this happen?

Huh? Why would islands disappear because of timecyc?

Modified drawdistances most likely?

If there's any incompatibility...

I assure you guys that there isn't any incompatibility with the PC/PS2 timecycs. Someone on youtube even modded a custom timecyc on PS2 and he didn't got any problems.

However for me the situation is different:

EDIT: Talked with AAP. (The Hero) and showed him some logs from PCSX2, he said there is something wrong with my game.

So my guess is that when changing the timecyc the game becomes corrupted. I am using APACHE 1.1/APACHE 3 and other people who have been using this program didn't got any problems.

So strange..

Seems like an memory bug...

Also, you can crack the PS2 ELF to check and only use the gta3.img file instead of the other dummies, and of course after this you won't need to use apache.

Nice work by the way!

EDIT:

Also, cracking one of the IRX to avoid some other checks.

It would be lovely if someone could fix the timecyc bug, even tho' I have thoughts of memory bugs, but whatever.
Still, neat work! Didn't thought GTA3 on PS2 could be modded.

Well this is strange. Its not draw distance, the island MegaLODs arent loaded (the bridge has a great draw distance, like in LCS). You could try removing some zones, but I think gta 3 wont work after that (I think the splashscreeb depend on that...)

What gta3 iso region are you modding?

UK / USA?

Also it kinda looks like a cullzone.dat issue

Theoretically, it be possible to replace any file in resources, but new file can't be more in size than old. Game just crash

Most of .dat files can be changed (without game crash). For examle PEDGRP.DAT

Also you can change MAIN.SCM (remember to keep the original file size or smaller)

Sorry for video quality, I had been bad emulation

Just thought i would check this thread again.

So Zmey20009, would it be possible to replace files bigger than the original ones? Or we're restricted to only replace with something less than the original size?

I would love to import some custom cars, or even a re-creation of a BETA timecyc but all these things are more bigger than the original files. :(

You need smaller size files if you edit the iso (in that case, anything bigger will overwrite other data). If you extract and THEN rebuild the iso, you can do anything (theoratically at least)

Theoretically indeed, i tried that. (extract and rebuild) and the game becomes 2gb less in size and won't boot up past the Rockstar Movies.

That means you're doing it wrong. You may have to pad with dummy files, and also I had to make sure some files were at the correct LBA in the iso.

Thanks for the clarification, aap.

About the LBA's, i don't know, i used some tool to extract the lba and update it after the files were modified. I also tried with sony's tool but the same results. I don't know what i'm doing wrong basically.

I would totally LOVE to know how to do it properly.

You must to keep original size. But you can "optimize" some files by deleting developer comments. They marked with the symbols "#", ";" or "//"

For example, timecyc.dat has such lines as // 1AM, // 2AM, // 3AM, etc. You can delete them

I don't see why you have to keep files the same size. if you're rebuilding a completely new iso there shouldn't be problems.

I know about the basic rebuilding the iso stuff. IML and all that shiz. But the problem is that i don't know what to do with these LBA's.

I can't find any useful tutorial either.

Interesting stuff!

By the way, how do you edited the pedgrp to make the buskers to spawn?

Mr.Kurowski

Hello everyone.

I tried compiling the iso using Sony's Tool. Latest version and PCSX2 doesn't show anymore errors in the log! (hurray!)

But still, the game has a black screen when the rockstar movies are over.

Any ideas?

How did you get it working?

Sony's Tool, latest version, making sure to write at the right lba(!!!!) and a little patience.

I will write a tutorial if anybody's interested.

In GTA3, you can change almost everything. It's not so hard. But some bugs might occur, wich me with the help of aap are trying to fix. :)
