I didn't find any consistent information about its removal. Is it still available on new gen consoles?
Yesterday a random sent me a message through the phone and I was wondering to know how that was possible. I miss that feature so much.

Afaik it has to do with certain settings about the voicechat. I think if you enable listening you can text others, if you also enable the mic you can even call them.

Yes it's still available on current gen consoles.

You can do it by opening your Phone > Contacts > select the player you want to text > enter a message without profanities (what nonsense).

Erm, my voice chat is disabled and I can still send and receive text messages...
