Is there a limit to how long notifications can stay?

Just curious. I haven't been clicking on my notification alerts of late, and this morning I had 46. Without reading any, I noticed the amount later go down to 36 and then 33 before I clicked on them out of curiosity and they disappeared. They've been piling up for about a a month, so do they just slowly get deleted by the forum software over time so as not to overburden it or something?

Looking at my notifications, it seems that it only stores notifications for a month.

It's just the notification code from what I'm reading. You're not losing any messages or notifications, just the display number seems to decrease with each log in.

The cut-off is definitely a month. You've had 40 unread notifications in the past month, so as time passes your unread count will decrease because the ones older than a month will start getting pruned.

I think the cut-off varies from a count. I get like 8 to 10 notifications everyday. The oldest of my notifications is about a week old. So, the limit seems to be based off a number here, not some date.

Sure you're not just checking the first page of your notifications? If you go here the oldest should be 4 weeks old if they cut off after a month.

My Notications page under UserCP hasn't saved anything older than a week for me. See this. I haven't deleted any notifications either in a long time. Clicking the link you gave brings me to a page with no notifications at all. Edited November 13, 2017 by Arrow

Aight after a bit of digging around with help form Kirsty, non-staff/OGA get a limit of 50 notifications, whereas OGA get unlimited notifications that mostly stretch back to the group change - though some people have a limit of a month for whatever reason.

Yeah I was reading up on it too. It's not perfect no matter if your a user / Mod / Admin. I think it depends on how much the server is trying to remember, I have also read there's a fix in updating IPB. I would never notice regardless as I clear mine out when I log in.

There do seem to be some discrepancies despite hard member group limits so this might be another of IPB's mysteries.
