How to be a better pilot?

I understand the value of the Pyro, but I've beaten plenty in my Hydra. Probably helps that I've spent the last year, 80% of the time, in the air.

Moved onto using the Rogue though, that thing is a beast :)

I've not had many issues with Hydras/Lazers while flying the Rogue/Pyro because both of the newer aircraft can turn much faster than the older jets. You need to make sure you don't get killed by the explosive cannon before you get close enough, but I find that once I make it past the merging phase I can easily stay out of their firing arc by simply constantly turning

Against Hydras, it's useful to remember that they don't accelerate well, so they'll lose a lot of speed when climbing, making them an easier target when they are doing a loop, and making it harder for them to follow if you can force them to fight in the vertical.

Of course I suck at aerial gunnery and both of these aircraft have wing-mounted guns that don't actually focus at the reticule, so most of my dogfights in the Rogue/Pyro have involved just flying circle around other planes and avoiding getting hit until I happen to get a lucky shot, lag happens to work in my favor, or the other guy gets frustrated and does something dumb.

You need to take your relationship with your aircraft of choice to the next level - you'll gain a deeper understanding of it then. It is also mandatory that you identify as it.

I'd say look around for tutorials on youtube, got to be plenty around by now. Most tips for the old jets can work on the new ones too (most of them).

If I get behind an enemy jet in my Pyro, I'm going to stick behind him. It just turns too sharply for them to break free.

Also worth bearing in mind that you only need to get their jet smoking. After that, if you just stick behind them for a while eventually their jet will fall down on its own.

Nothing substitutes for experience. Get shot down a bunch. You'll learn slowly!

Do flight school if you haven't yet. Decent money the first time through, too. In an actual dogfight- ALTITUDE. ALTITUDE. ALTITUDE. Get reaaaaal high. When they come near you, dive on to their tail. Make sure you get the first burst in. Once they're smoking, you've won. Their performance degrades quickly.

ALTITUDE.

Anyone who still disbelieves that the Pyro is the best dogfighter needs to get schooled hehe.

As said before, you just have to make sure not to get hit by the explosive cannons in the First encounter, from there on you should at least be able to not let your opponent get into firing position again.

Also regarding off radar: fly high up and keep slightly ascending. Looks backwards. You will See flashing navigation lights and jets coming to you from quite a distance. Let them come Closer so they feel save and nosedive when they get close. Beat many tryhards in the past weeks with this.

*only works if you notice that someone goes OTR

Merging with a Pyro is a significant problem too.

People usually avoid engaging opponents head-on when both are in explosive cannon aircraft (Hydra, Lazer, Rogue) because of the very significant chance of a mutual gun kill on top of the risk of colliding. With a Pyro (Molotok and Nokota too, but I doubt anyone would use those in serious dogfights), you do not possess this deterrent and thus are wide-open to usually-risky opening moves, like divebombing you while perfectly aware that you're aware in turn (and thus would be able to climb and meet their fire in a head-on engagement).

In other words, you'll always be the side getting jumped on unless you play ultra-aggressively to any armed aircraft in the sky.

Hey, that's my free-roam "dogfighting" secret! (i.e. why dogfight fairly at all when you can just get an upper hand with altitude)

Practice. But practice with goals in mind. If you mindlessly die all the time it won't be very effective.

Try dogfighting in deathmatches.

The major mistake I see in a recent dogfight adversary mode - people never use breaks. Breaks allow you to minimize the turn radius. It should work with Pyro as well as well as with other fighter jets.

But never lose speed too much - speed is your defence.

Start with merging

Also, try to learn this technique

You don't fight the enemy with your weapons, you fight him with your Breaks. Breaks are very, VERY important to master.

Never fly away from the opponent - you will open your defence in this case. Always control the distance. Always keep him in your sight and try to be out of his.

Don't fly in a single plane constantly - always angle your circles, become unpredictable. In the end, it's all about positioning.

I think I'm a good pilot, I can divebomb and take out targets in a Hydra easily.

My personal advice? If you can, I recommend training on LG since every target is easy to kill. Learn, bug out of lobbies with modders, etc. Don't have a Hydra? Grab modded money, binge it on whatever you want and the Hydra. R* doesn't care a bit if you get cheat money on LG. If you don't have access to LG, and have a Fort Zancudo Hangar, I recommend ditching the Pyro for a bit and using the Lazers stationed at the base to learn.

The Pyro has a bigger learning curve than other planes, and can be really good when you get used to it. It's much faster than the OG jets and can turn much faster with just smooth handling. The MGs aren't a problem if you hit your target, the jet will fail from 10 seconds of Combat MG MKI fire and the MG on planes is much stronger; it blows up the jet in 3.

The best strategy for any particularly annoying foes is gain altitude and speed, spam missles at them then while they're distracted, hit them with the MG until the jet fails, and optionally blow them up with one last missle (or let them go if you want, it's a win if you down them).

Sounds like op wants to be an ace. The pyro is what you want.

Start doing standard dogfighting loops. You know the ones that are parallel to the ground (deck). You'll probably notice that you are on the throttle about 110% of the time... That's wrong. Feather the throttle so you aren't at max speed. You'll turn tighter. Throttle should always be used with discretion. Now if you're in a vertical climb, by all means, mash the gas.

Most noobs get too excited to manage their speed. They know that rockets can't get to them and they're happy enough with that. Flying faster than the other guy won't put you behind him, which is where you want to be.

I could write a small book on the subject but a video would be best. Skim through the jet thread in the vehicle section. Watch drrumplesweatyforeskin's and helix's and some of the other dogfight videos. There are some true master level dogfighting videos therein.

Watch a bunch of the videos on this guy's channel. (Wispy). Pay attention to the throttle, it's not always on. Also, the camera mastery is exquisite. This is what good dogfights look like.

I'd also like to add that in the pyro you'll use your throttle much less than a lazer in a typical dogfight. The pyro is so fast.

Another awesome vid for an awesome topic. I've seen this guy first hand and can attest that the magic is real:

For braking I also use the gear when already enganged in a dogfight. You don't risk a stall (although that shouldn't be an issue Once you got a feeling of how hard/long you can hold the brakes). The gear can slow you down permanently and works quite effectively. It takes a bit of practice, but... what doesn't?

Just note: the Rogue gets VERY sluggish with gears out, I'd not recommend using that tactic with the Rogue. Works good in Pyro and Nokota.

If used properly it's also a Good way to make your enemy overshoot you (only if you're in a non-explosive dogfight)

The new planes are also pretty cool for friendly dogfights. First one smoking loses and has to limp back to their hangar. Not killing the other guy makes for a very friendly fight.

Just remember, that the most optimal turning speed is 315 km/h.

Oh wait... wrong game.

Then just do circles, till your oponent's head will go off.

or just go decouple mode for better turning with precision maneuvers like so

It might be work trying 1st person view. Personally, I found being in 1st person view in jets /helis allows me to aim better and stay on target. Part of this is due to the fact your aiming reticule won't be all over the damn place when you're trying to aim. Maybe you could give it a try although I don't know how the visibility is in the pyros cockpit.

I used 1st person view long time ago, now i'm switching to the aircraft weapon camera - much faster. You should not use the first person constantly, because you can't see what's beneath you. I would advise the 3rd person + weapon camera combo.

Some good tips here.

Also when makings tight turns to circle around press on the brakes slightly but don't cut the engines.

Easier typed then done, as the adrenaline most the times have me heavy on the throttle.

I've sent hydras and lasers into fits coming after me in my Vestra performing this maneuver.

This may sound harsh but, some people just aren't fit for an specific area of the game.

I'm sh*t at Marksman Rifle dancing, I mostly avoid it.

Maybe dogfighting isn't your thing?

Here's a suggestion: try it with a Lazer, see how fare against them.

I'm still getting rekt when in a Savage. I land about 3 maybe 4 kills before the end beeping begins.

I multitask; i work two jobs, have a family and am probably in the top 1,000 jet pilots, insofar as I'm concerned. I'm better at dadding than piloting and grammar.

The oppressor gets owned by the pyro. Get off your bike and enjoy the show. Take some pop shots with mkii sniper and relax.

The Oppressor is essentially neutered with countermeasures, so should at least one party have an SR aircraft, you will find yourself soaring around impotently before making a mess of your landing. That is, if you're not hit by missiles first.

Oppressors worst air enemy is the nokota even in badsport where lagswitching is rife i still haven't been taken down by one, this plane could land you in that lobby though its very easy to get carried away with them missiles but imo a good vehicle to learn in.

Il be putting mine away for a bit after tomorrow :D i have to behave for a few weeks lol
