Freeaim revelations and the proper attitude

Hey I just wanted to share an experience and get your opinion in a few things.

First off, a friend I made recently introduced me to a controller setup called "standard FPS2." In PS4 this changes your run button from X to R1 and then makes X your roll button. Also, square becomes your cover button. Overall it made me into a much better shooter for Freeaim.

In the past, I did Freeaim for quite some time but everyone seemed secretive about proper settings and would simply use you as a target while boosting their Kill Death Ratio (KDR).

As for my most recent experience I did a 1v1 death match with the friend who showed me FPS2. We had fun but I noticed during replaying a recording of our match that he had healed himself prior to ending our match. He won with 5 to 4. It disheartens me that he did that but also makes me happy that he had to do that just to get the win.

My question for everyone is what setup have you found work you and whether you prefer Auto Aim (AA) or Freeaim (aim) or Freeaim assist (FAA)?

My follow-up question is what is your attitude during gunplay? Do you take being killed personal or let it roll off you like nothing? Do you shot talk players or treat people with respect? So many questions but I'd like to hear your opinions. Thanks! You folks are awesome!

Been using Auto Aim since I started GTA way back in 2004. Ain't gonna change.

I don't take anything personal in a game. Just like I wrote on my forum Respect List; you respect me, I respect you. Anyone who talks a load of twoddle over the mic when I'm having a bad day, I'll either just blow'em up or go passive and grab a boat 'n' trailer :p

Thanks for sharing. It took me time but I've adopted the philosophy that "Its just a game." Naturally, you'll get hyped up during gunplay but I never let sh*t talkers make anymore stressful than it is. My personal goal is to help people adopt this ideal in my crew so we can have fun without the stress. Overall, I think this would make everyone much better shooters.

I've always played GTA5 in Free Aim (or any GTA for that matter). It makes gunfights more challenging, which I like. Feel free to use Assisted Aim, but it makes the game too easy in my opinion. I'm pretty sure I use the standard controls, with X being running, R1 being taking cover, etc.

Nice to finally have a freeaimer replying. I started with standard controls myself and eventually adopted the "claw method." Mucho respect to claw shooters.

I've played both auto-aim and free-aim GTAO enough to know what's what, with that said it would be hard pressed for anyone to get me to switch my targeting priority these days as I appreciate the extra effort it takes in free-aim to be a menace. Games with a bit of difficulty always keep me engaged longer than your standard, 'run and guns".

The button layout I use is the standard one and I can only imagine that changing that now at this point in the game would be counter-productive to my killing prowess. I like knowing I had to really hone in on my gun game and play smart to get my kills on GTAO.

With regards to attitude, a kill is a kill but if you stick around long enough after getting me with an rpg or a multitude of the other cheap tactics a lot if non-skilled free-aim players use; don't get upset when I get settled and start making your hands sweat for that kill...

Essentially, free-aim is life!!

On pc auto aim pvp sucks ass, it's like everyone has aimbot, that's why i'll stay in free aim, plus with the mouse it's something else, much better feeling.

But it can work out if you stay away from pvp, for npcs using joystick it's great.

Big thumbs up. Lots of love for the honest opinions. Also, feels good to take a break from the usual hum drum speculation thread. Keep those opinions coming! I wanna hear more!

No Use For A Name

Question for freeaim people - do jet homing missiles lock on to ground targets, or is it completely freeaim, IE nothing locks on to anything?

FA ALL DAY EVERYDAY. Can't remember what setup I use for FPV but its the typical COD button layout one. Only have to click the sprint button once and I can run non stop. Pretty nice when you get tired of tapping x all the time.

As for killing and being killed. I'm a silent killer, meaning I dont sh*t talk or talk at all. I let my bullets talk for me. I'm also a "dont start sh*t wont be sh*t" kinda guy. So I dont just kill or "troll" unprovoked.

sh*t talking back and forth is just a distraction tactic used by the skill challenged imo. You wanna talk sh*t maybe you should go back to the 9th grade where someone might actually give a damn.

Also you wont run into any kids really because they cant free aim for jack sh*t and need the assistance. So yeah, want to avoid the children screaming, go to free aim.

I hate these free-aim topics. They always turn into free-aim tryhards criticizing those who use assisted aim.

I use assisted aim because I'm not really a PvP douche. PvE is my forte and for that assisted aim is NEEDED because the AI is insanely f*cking accurate.

So happy I'm on PC so I never asked myself that question.

Assisted aim dudes doing videos and generally bragging on "how to be good" are fun, they talk about being accurate while their console is doing all the job.

I guess assisted aim lobbies are a total sh1t show? Because anyone can kill anyone then...

I guess, this thread is more related to console/controller users. But meh, just gonna share with ye, guys, anyway.
I play without any aim assists, because why the hell should i need it? Not telling that im pro aimer, just i dont feel like using it.
I use the whole standart keyboard setup, but with minor change - mouse wheel scrolling. Since my mouse wheel is not working for 2 years now (and im lazy to buy a new one) i changed it's setup to Mouse4 and Mouse5 buttons. Yeah...

And second question. I don't take game deaths to the hearth.
But im very picky when it comes to the balance. I like PvP only when it's balanced. I accept my win or lose if it's fair. So GTA O fights are freaking awful in this way. This is the 2nd worst PvP game for me (first is MGO3).

Uh no you dont need AA for the AI. Anyway this thread is for FA, since you said you hate these topics....why are you even here, bringing up your need for handicap mode? lol

I have been almost exclusively playing FA since the current gen patch (December 2014) that added deadzone and additional acceleration settings, though I mostly play in third person. I like the wider field of view (no mouse look on console sadness). A few of my friends insist on AA, but I switch back as soon as I finish my session with them.

I tried a first person style preset in third person for awhile. It allowed clicking L3 in to run, but required holding L3 in to sprint. This was wearing out the left stick on my DS4 so I eventually switched back to the default tap X to sprint config. That is what I use today.

Regarding deaths and gunplay I am usually a non-confrontational player. I will engage if someone insists on harassing myself or my friends, but I make it pretty obvious that I am not interested in PVP. If someone insists after that, we break out the military hardware and kick them around for awhile before switching sessions. I havent been concerned about competitive gameplay since maybe Street Fighter Alpha 2 or Quake 3. I bought BLOPs3 and a recent KoF and just was not feeling it.

And I do not have anything against AA players, but I do not like the jerky pop-lock targeting. FA changes the dynamics of the game. Actually GTA V/Online is a completely different experience. FA forces you to use other tactics. Vehicles become more viable weapons. Movement and surroundings become that much more important. You learn to line up your shots before you round a corner. Taking cover and holding away to peak and aim before popping out to take a shot is actually useful now. Half trigger pulls to jog and shoot separate the seasoned players from the ADS kids. Ducking and driving through a war zone actually works now. The list goes on.

FA makes combat actually interesting, I don't hold anything against AA players but I'm a fan of challenging games like the Soul's series and other demanding titles. GTAO with AA on feels like training wheels almost, and please don't even get me started about how FAA users are allowed to play amongst pure FA users...

If my aim settings get changed when I join different lobbies I don't bother changing them back after.

I use whatever setting it's on when I start playing; freeaim, auto, assisted whatever.

Controller-wise, I have a standard CoD set up. Click in the left stick for run etc etc

I don't do a lot of 1st person. GTA is awful in FP.

You actually only have to click L3 once and don't have to keep it held down to sprint and keep sprinting. Click once, run non stop.

In my experience this was only the case in FPV. The config I used required holding L3 when I was 3rd person.

Yeah the click once to run setting only activated when in FPV cause that's how I had it setup. In 3rd person I would have to tap x continuously.

I found that the default settings work for me. I tried alternate FPS 2 for first person, but this game isn't built for first person, it really isn't.

From the people that I used to fight, at first I was reckless as sh*t, I used to just charge in guns blazing. But when I took a step back, started mastering those contact missions, I strategized like a motherf*cker. Whenever someone would kill me, it would be by accident or luck, because I don't expose myself like the side to side beach warriors.

Or rocket launcher. Using a rocket launcher against someone is not tactical at all, it just shows that you f*cking suck, so you're going to spray and pray. I am in the minority when I shoot and move, it's not just roll roll roll. I don't trash talk, not really a reason to. I just battle myself inside like, you really gonna let that one slide? Oh no, you're better than that, kick his motherf*ckin' ass. Free aim, auto aim, doesn't matter. I'm a G at both.

On PC the difference between Free-Aim and Free-Aim Assisted is so minimal it's not even worth mentioning. Call it what you want for the assisted targeting, it makes a small change that is barely noticeable.

My targeting is set to FA-Assisted, big deal. Not going to change it because of "I need a challenge." The game is challenging enough with every session infested with modders and aimbotters.

I played with full auto aim on XB1 and enjoying free aim with mouse now: different playstyle, more flexible control of the cover, etc. To each their own, I think. I can't aim for sh*t with controller and never bothered to learn, so coming back to mouse was like coming home.

Appreciate all the feedback folks. I really should have set the title to "Gunplay" rather than "Freeaim." Regardless, the FPS 2 settings work quite well for both.

Played FA on release on X360. Switched to AA because those lobbies were more populated. Switched back to FA on PC release, got owned by Keyboard and Mouse users (I still play with a controller). Found out you could play FA against KnM users. That got boring fast. Switched to FAA to be somewhat on par with KnM users. It's op when using Bullshark + revolver, but I rarely pull that.

Key for me is to just ignore tryhards, just go passive or switch sessions, let them brag and stuff, I can't be bothered with those kind of people. I love getting into conventional, non-dancer, non-explosive gunfights.

I consider FA best for both PvP and PvE. PvP is obvious because it doesn't come down to who presses the aim button first and rolls more skillfully. PvE because you don't just empty your mag into one enemy at a time, you spread your mag over multiple enemies, hitting them - and as such removing their threat temporarily. FAA is also good for fly-by or drive-by shooting. Especially with Combat MG MK2. Just hold right trigger and tap left trigger and you're constantly switching targets.

For control schemes: regular for 3rd person view, FPS1 for first person (sprinting in first person view with regular controls is very inconvenient).

I much prefer Free Aim (on PC), have done it now for so long. Some of my friends I used to play with were always FA so I just went with it. Ended up in an assisted aim lobby the other night as I wanted to join a new player on my friends list but afterwards I went back to FA. I still cant PvP with guns for sh*t with it so I don't do it much but if the need arises to battle someone (I'm always defensive, as in I never attack someone first without provocation) I will pull out the heavy stuff to defend myself the way I know how. I wont go for any notions of what's proper weapon wise to use whilst free aiming (as I do see a lot of stuff in the game chat about people been chided on this... 'gotta use explosives/jets blah blah scrub'. If that's you, fine, that's your thing but I wont do it.

As to the second question...I used to take it personally in the early days but these days its 'Meh'. I may decide to get even or I'll just leave the area. If they persist I'll leave the session or just go passive. I also tend to ignore the text chat whilst battling it out. I roll my eyes whenever the terribly generic and unoriginal 'git gud...u mad?....u salty?' starts filling it. I won't take the bait.
