So taking out the narrative plot etc what game do you think shines when purely talking about the Dialogue?

I think IV, as I felt it balanced having a humorous script & a mature script the best, and I would say it's the most quotable...but it's close!...V would be at most a whisker behind in the quotable department for me.

Though I also have a soft spot for the Dialogue & script in CTW as I thought it was so funny Unique & the script was just hilariously zany.

Remember it's not about the overall story, for instance, I'm not the biggest fan of the San Andreas narrative but I can fully appreciate the game had some funny & extremely memorable Dialogue.

Also, I don't think VCS had an over bad story, but taking out maybe some Marty Jay Williams & Phil Cassidy quotes I really can't remember any of the Dialogue tbh

It's between San Andreas and Chinatown Wars for me. Don't i really care for serious stories in games, but this aside these had two of the funniest scripts of most games i've ever completed. San Andreas gets my vote for vocal delivery. :^:

Definitely IV.

"After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul."

GTA IV. I know Michael Hollick tends to get a lot of flack for his voice work, but truthfully it's his delivery of dialogue that makes Niko such a memorable character to me and how he coveys the script. His revelation to Roman why he came to Liberty City and his confrontation with Darko are the two best examples IMO. That's not including the exceptional dialogue between Dimitri and Faustin. the UL Paper Contact, Ileyna etc.

Even GTA V despite my issues with the story stands up in the saddle in the dialogue department. In fact it's probably easier to say the entire HD era does. When I go back to a 3D era GTA regardless of the star power often I feel the dialogue comes across as uninspired.

Maybe at the time I didn't notice, but now most of the actors (not all) sound like they didn't put any emotion into what they were saying and it just sounds cringey like reading lines whilst they were in the toilet with a microphone shoved in their face.

Could you give a specific example or two? Everyone i can recall off the top of my head was voiced pretty well (except the asian characters, who were mostly unremarkable, or 'bad' in a different way. I am probably a bad judge at this because i always clash with mainstream opinions on cartoon or dubbed anime VAs too.)

Kent Paul and Maccer were pretty bad I thought. OG Loc, Luigi and Misty also fit the bill too IMO.

Agreed. IV and V have the best dialogue and voice acting in the series. Even though I have my issues with some of Michael Hollicks voice acting, it was still better than what we got before. It's one of the reasons why I don't understand the people who say the big name actors provided so much for the 3D era. I can't think of a single character who's voice acting and dialogue I thought was truly exceptional. Just good or serviceable at best. Edited by Piggsy pls

Grand Theft Auto IV and it's not even close. It was a genuinely mature story which, right down to the random characters, felt both authentically human and nightmarishly surrealistic. They used obscure voice actors, so the characters wouldn't be overshadowed, and tried to tell a story about the dwindling days of organised crime in a world where the old ways were simply dying out in the face of increased government power.

No game in the series before or since tried to tackle those subjects and do so with such sobriety and maturity. In terms of the story, it was a true masterpiece.

As as much as I like Tommy and that Ray Liotta's a great actor even Tommy's just average/good in this respect. Go back and listen to Liotta in Goodfellas (for example) and then listen to Tommy. He sounds almost lifeless, disinterested like he's just doing it to collect a pay check. As I said at the time I didn't notice it much, but revisiting these games after so many years paints a stark reality of how painfully average the voice acting is. Doesn't matter if Ray Liotta, James Woods, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper etc are in the credits.

This is the thing with taking a chance with non-Hollywood stars I feel that makes a huge difference. They don't have a reputation that precedes them and I feel it brings out the best in them.

Rockstar actually said Ray Liotta was hard to work with, some days he just didnt want to do it, he also complained all the way through it that he wasnt getting paid enough.

He also said he found it hard work doing the voice over, one of the hardest things he had ever done.

Considering its serious all around tone and focus on telling its story literally with the intention of communicating with the player himself, it has to be GTA IV imo.

Not only that, but he is more or less officially the main reason why Rockstar quit signing famous actors for voice acting in their games, because of the reasons you mentioned.

But nonetheless I find his performance to be pretty satifying.

When you think about it did they really need famous actors to do the voices? as long as they sound sincere and make the character come alive i dont think it matters, if its not a famous actor its just easier when you hear the voice to say thats Nikko rather than going oh thats Ray Liotta, if you get what i mean.

GTAIV is definately my favourite but Vice City comes a close second.

Of course they didn't need them, but that turned out to be a really good move looking at it from various aspects, not only because it's their speciality and main source of income which made them globaly famous or because it greatly contributes to telling a story in the end.

Again, stories of 3D universe doesn't seem to take themselves seriously and they aren't making any efforts to touch or to reach out to the player in comparison to HD games, and that's what makes them special, at least from my point of view.
Maybe that's what pissed off Liotta in the end, after all he's a dedicated actor.

It's my honest opinion, that Rockatar hired these famous actors not because of their special acting abilities, but rather because of the promotion of the games and maybe because of their engagement in similar themed movies, so it became one big reference.

But, one thing is for certain, even less known actors like Michael Hollick, voice actor behind Niko, can be pain in the neck, from very similar reasons Liotta was.

I agree. I mean lets be honest, when people look back at Ray Liotta's and Sam Jackson's best work, they aren't going to be thinking of VC and SA. Compare them to a guy like Steven Ogg, love Trevor or hate him, the whole reason Steven blew up as an actor was because of GTA V.

I agree that the hiring of big name actors was probably to help promote the series. By the time GTA IV came around there was no need for that anymore, and I feel like the lesser known actors put more effort in their roles and with the dialogue delivery because unlike big actors, they can't really afford not to.

I must admit I feel like a bit of a dick when I said a few months back that Oggs overrated. Sure I dont like Trevor, but objectively he does do a pretty damn good job voicing the character and being hired for Westworld and The Walking Dead proves that..

Another impressive thing about GTA V too is not only did the actors have to deliver their lines, but they done the motion capture work also.
